I took another gulp of tea. “She says she has a surprise for me tomorrow.” “Oooh. Exciting.” She perked up. “Maybe it’s a promotion.” “I don’t think so,” I said dismissively. “It could be! You know how pleased she’s been with you.” “I know.” I ran a hand through my hair. “I just don’t know if I’m good enough to be a real staff writer for them.” “You already are a real writer,” she replied. “You’re just not getting paid yet.
