CHAPTER -5

480 Words
Lucian Blackwood wasn’t the type to lose sleep. But tonight… he was wide awake. Staring at the ceiling. Phone on his chest. Jaw clenched. The call kept echoing in his head. "I’m pregnant, Lucian… You left when you found out..." The trembling voice. The pause. The freaking drama. He didn’t recognize the number, but the voice? It felt dangerously familiar. Only one person he knew was that good at sarcasm with emotional flair. Evelyn Hart. His sister’s best friend. His personal headache. He swung his legs off the bed, pulling on a hoodie. The digital clock glowed 1:42 AM. He walked down the hallway quietly, stopped in front of Lucy’s bedroom door. Muffled voices inside. Laughter. Then— “Did you hear his voice? I swear he was about to call 911 on me!” Evelyn cackled. Lucy shrieked, “You said ‘that night in your car!’ That was evil!” More laughter. Wild, unfiltered, and completely at his expense. Lucian’s eye twitched. His hand reached for the doorknob and, without knocking, he pushed it open. Both girls froze mid-wheeze. Evelyn still had a brownie halfway to her mouth. Lucy had tears in her eyes from laughing so hard. Lucian leaned against the doorframe, arms folded, expression blank—but his tone was razor sharp. “So it was you.” Evelyn blinked. “What—what was me?” “You’re a terrible liar,” he said coldly, walking into the room. “Your Oscar-worthy performance about our imaginary lovechild? Really?” Lucy burst into laughter again. “Oh my God, you actually believed it?!” Lucian gave her a withering glare. “You put her up to it.” “She needed healing,” Lucy defended, hands up. “Laughter is therapeutic.” He turned back to Evelyn. “You know prank calling someone about a fake pregnancy is unhinged, right?” Evelyn shrugged, completely unapologetic. “And yet you answered like a guilty ex.” He narrowed his eyes. “You’re not even sorry.” “Nope,” she said sweetly, popping the brownie into her mouth. “But you should be. For hanging up. Our baby has abandonment issues now.” Lucy wheezed, face planted into a pillow. Lucian exhaled slowly through his nose, clearly restraining the urge to throw something. “You’re both insane.” He turned to leave, pausing at the door. “And Hart,” he said flatly. “Next time you try to prank me, try not to sound like you’re actually in love.” Door closed. Evelyn’s smile dropped just a little. Lucy raised her brow. “Oop. That man really said ‘uno reverse.’” Evelyn blinked at the door. “…Did I sound like I was in love?” Lucy grinned. “I don’t know. Are you?” Evelyn threw a pillow at her. “Shut up!”
