Chapter 1

539 Words
1 year later  It was a Friday morning, that meant I was at work at a local coffee shop. My best friend Sarah was also on shift with me and we were busy! Best coffee in town, or we gained a tonne of customers out of pity. I couldn’t work it out. After the death of Matthew I moved towns, away from his family, away from the life that I knew. It was the only way I could move on. I couldn’t live in the house that we shared together anymore with all of his belongings. This was part of my healing process. I once had career goals, but now just getting to my regular job at the coffee shop was a task. I know, I know. It’s been a year, move on already! I had a life plan a year ago, a wedding being planned- I even had my dress already! We talked about kids every day and then that was snatched away from me from one fateful night. Sarah asks me all the time when I’m going to start dating again. Sometimes I don’t know if I will, although there is one person who has caught my eye recently.  “Helllooo!! Earth to Soph!! Are you in there?”  “What? Sorry.”  “You zoned out again. You also burnt the coffee.”  Damn it!! Get your head in it Sophia. I did that a lot, just tuned out. Just as I was cleaning up the mess from burning the coffee and then spilling the milk the door opened and two guys walked in. Tom, an old regular had started bringing his friend with him. I had learnt his name was Cody.  “Bit of a mess there Sophia!” Tom commented.  “Ah yeah.. don’t cry over spilt milk they say” I half heartedly joked. “Just the usual?”  “You know it!” Tom replied, as I glanced at his friend. Dark hair, flawless tanned skin, and bright blue eyes. His smile was mesmerising, though I tried not to stare too long. He was the opposite of Matthew, who was your typical blonde hair, blue eye beauty. He turned to me and flashed me his gorgeous smile with perfectly straight teeth as I handed him their coffee’s to go.  Sarah came up to me after they left, smirking at me, playfulness in her brown eyes. “What was that, hey?”  “No idea what your talking about” “Oh you can’t fool me! I know you Sophia! You fancy him! I mean why not, those ocean eyes, perfect smile!! Mmmm I bet his got a sexy body under those work clothes. Mmmmmm”  I rolled my eyes at her, lightly tapping her on the back of the head. “Stop it will you!!”  “Whyyyy?! You deserve to get back out there, you deserve to be happy again! It’s ok to move on you know. Plus, we are 25 now- that clock is ticking!!”  Oh for heavens sake! I shook my head and went back to work. I guess she is right, it is time for me to start to move on. I just don’t know how. I looked sideways at my best friend, who was lost in conversation with a new customer and smiled. I loved knowing I had someone who cared for me and could possibly help push me back into the world.
