Chapter 1: Four Years
Avery's Point of View The moment the airplane touched down, a familiar knot settled deep in my stomach. I stared through the oval window as the city slowly came into view beneath the afternoon sun. Towering buildings stretched across the skyline, glittering exactly as they had four years ago, untouched by time and completely indifferent to the memories they carried. Everything looked the same. …Only I wasn't. I tightened my grip on the armrest, willing my racing heart to calm. Four years ago, I had boarded a plane leaving this city with nothing but a broken heart and a secret tucked safely beneath my own. I had sworn to myself that I would never return. Yet life had a cruel way of laughing at promises. "Mommy?" A tiny voice pulled me back to the present. I turned to my daughter, and just like always, the storm inside me eased. Jasmine looked up at me with bright, curious eyes, hugging her stuffed rabbit against her chest. Her thick dark curls framed a face that could brighten even my darkest days. "Are we here already?" she asked, practically bouncing in her seat. I smiled despite the anxiety squeezing my chest. "We're here, sweetheart." "Yay!" she cheered. "I can't wait to see Grandma!" My smile softened. I brushed a loose curl behind her ear. "She's been waiting a very long time to meet you." That much was true. My mother had known about Jasmine since the day I found out I was pregnant. Through countless phone calls and video chats, she had watched her granddaughter grow from a tiny newborn into the energetic little girl sitting beside me now. Every year she begged me to come home yet every year I found another excuse. I would often say the clinic was too busy or my patients needed me, sometimes I would tell her flights were too expensive and somehow telling London was too far was one of them too. The excuses changed. The real reason never did. Coming back meant returning to the place where I had lost everything. It meant risking the peaceful life I had spent four years building. It meant risking him. The airport buzzed with life. Rolling suitcases rattled across polished floors while flight announcements echoed overhead. Families reunited with joyful hugs. Business travelers hurried past with phones pressed against their ears. Jasmine looked everywhere at once. "So many people," she whispered. I chuckled softly. "For you, this is an adventure." "It is!" She squeezed my hand tighter. Watching her excitement warmed my heart. She deserved adventures. She deserved family gatherings. She deserved happy childhood memories instead of constantly living in the shadow of secrets she wasn't even old enough to understand. As we stepped into the arrivals hall, I immediately spotted my mother waiting near the barrier. The second she saw us, her face lit up. "Avery!" She hurried toward us before wrapping me in a tight embrace. "Oh, sweetheart," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You're finally here." I hugged her back. "It's good to see you too, Mom." She stepped back, cupping my face between her hands. "You look wonderful. London has been treating you well." "I've been keeping busy." "I was honestly afraid you'd cancel at the last minute." A guilty smile tugged at my lips. "I almost did." She laughed. "I know you did." Then her eyes became suspiciously watery. "Thank you for coming anyway." I reached for her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. "Congratulations, Mom. You deserve this wedding because you deserve to be happy.” Her smile widened. For a moment, I meant every word. Our relationship hadn't always been easy. We had argued more times than I could count over the years, especially after I left for London. But she'd found someone who made her smile again. After everything she'd been through, I truly hoped this marriage would give her the happiness she'd always been searching for. "Thank you, sweetheart," she whispered before pulling me into another hug. Then her attention shifted toward the little girl hiding behind my leg. Her entire expression melted. "And this must be my precious granddaughter." Jasmine peeked around me shyly. "Hi..." "Oh, sweetheart." Mom crouched until they were eye level. "I've waited so many years to finally meet you." Jasmine looked up at me for permission. I nodded encouragingly. Only then did she step forward, allowing my mother to gently hold her tiny hand. "My goodness," Mom laughed through tears. "You're even more beautiful than all the pictures your mommy sends me." Jasmine giggled. "I like your necklace." Mom laughed again. "And I like your rabbit." "It's Mr. Floppy." "Well, hello there, Mr. Floppy." Watching the two of them together filled my heart with unexpected warmth. For a brief moment… Everything felt normal. Like we were simply another family reunited after years apart. Then my mother looked at me. It lasted only a heartbeat. A quiet glance yet filled with questions she'd never dared ask. She never once demanded to know who Jasmine's father was.mNot when I tearfully confessed I was pregnant. Not when I gave birth alone in London. Not during the countless video calls over the years. She respected my silence. Or perhaps… She already knew. I had never spoken “his” name. I didn't have to. She remembered how completely I had loved him. She remembered the day I called her sobbing, telling her I was leaving the city without explaining why. She remembered how heartbroken I had been. Months later, I became a mother. It didn't take much imagination to connect the dots. Deep down, I knew she had figured it out years ago. She simply loved me enough not to force me to say “his” name out loud. "Come on," Mom said, breaking the silence. "The driver is waiting outside. We still have the rehearsal dinner tonight, and tomorrow is the wedding." I nodded. One weekend. That was all I had to survive. Tomorrow, I'd stand beside my mother as she married the man she loved. The morning after, Jasmine and I would board the earliest flight back to London. Forty-eight hours. I just needed to get through forty-eight hours… Without seeing him— "Daddy!" Jasmine's delighted voice rang through the terminal. Every muscle in my body locked. My head snapped toward her. She had slipped from my side and was pointing excitedly at one of the enormous television screens suspended above the arrivals hall. On the giant screen, a man stood behind a podium surrounded by reporters, bright camera flashes exploding around him as microphones were thrust toward his face. He looked so painfully familiar. Older. Broader. Even more handsome than the man I had left behind. I looked back at Jasmine and squatted so we could level our height. "No, sweetheart," I whispered, forcing a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "You shouldn't call strangers Daddy." She frowned in confusion."But he looks like Daddy." Before I could respond, the broadcaster's voice echoed through the terminal speakers. "...And that was Rhett Kane, captain of the city's professional hockey team, speaking to the media after leading another impressive victory. The star athlete is expected to begin training camp next week as fans eagerly await another championship run." My breath caught. Rhett Kane. Even after four years, hearing his name spoken aloud felt like someone twisting a knife deep inside my chest. Around us, several young women slowed their steps, their attention fixed on the television. "Oh my God, it's Rhett Kane!" "I swear he gets more handsome every year." "I heard he's dating Vanessa Reed now." "They're probably endgame. Look at him—he's perfect." Their excited laughter faded into meaningless noise. I couldn't hear anything except the frantic pounding of my own heart. I stood frozen, unable to tear my eyes away from the television. Vanessa. Even hearing her name after all these years reopened wounds I'd spent so long trying to bury. Once, I believed Rhett Kane was the love of my life. I believed we were building a future together. We had plans. Dreams. Late-night conversations about the home we'd someday buy and the family we'd raise together. I loved him with every piece of my heart. Then another woman entered the picture. Vanessa Reed. At first, he insisted she was only someone connected to his career. Someone I didn't need to worry about. I wanted to believe him. God, I wanted to. But it was too late… before I knew it, all I remembered was I ran away…with the beautiful daughter he didn't know existed. "Mommy?" Jasmine tugged gently on my dress. "Why are you crying?" Only then did I realize a single tear had slipped down my cheek. I quickly wiped it away and forced another smile. "I'm fine." But I wasn't. Not even close. A cold shiver traveled down my spine despite the summer heat surrounding us. One thought drowned out every other. Please... Don't let me run into him. Not at the wedding. Not anywhere. Because if Rhett Kane looked closely enough at the little girl holding my hand... He wouldn't just see a stranger's child. He would see himself. And the secret I'd protected for four long years would finally come crashing down around us.
