Chapter 3

"Greetings, Lady Governess," he said, his voice smooth as honey. My governess raised an eyebrow in suspicion, but the young nobleman continued, "I apologize if I’ve kept the princess from her duties; I was just discussing some matters of importance with her. I'll take my leave now." With a small bow, he turned and walked down the hallway, leaving me alone with my governess. She continued to eye me with suspicion, but didn't press the matter any further. Instead, she simply gestured for me to follow her, and we made our way back to the throne room for the remainder of the meeting. On our way back, she suddenly turned to me and said, her voice stern but gentle, "Amara, I understand that you are young and curious, but I must warn you against getting involved with noblemen in such a manner." Before I could respond, she continued, “As a princess, you must uphold a certain standard of behavior and morality. You must be careful not to tarnish your reputation.” I couldn't resist a small smirk as I replied, "Oh, don't worry, Lady Governess. I'll be sure to save myself for the dukes and earls." The governess rolled her eyes, but I noticed the shadow of a smile reach her lips and couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at my own wit. As we entered the throne room, the council members turned to us expectantly. "Is everything alright, Your Highness?" the Chancellor asked, his expression worried. "Of course, Chancellor," I replied smoothly, glancing at my governess for support. "I simply had a pressing matter to attend to, but Lady Governess ensured that all was taken care of." The governess nodded in agreement, and the council members seemed to relax. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the meeting was adjourned, and the council members filed out of the throne room. I let out a sigh of relief, glad that I was finally free from their tedious discussions. Just as I was about to leave, a messenger appeared at the door, bowing low. "Your Highness, the Queen requests your presence in her chambers." I groaned inwardly, wondering what my mother could possibly want now. With a heavy heart, I made my way to her chambers, hoping that it wouldn't be another lecture on proper princess behavior. As I entered the room, I found my mother seated at her vanity, her hair being tended to by her ladies-in-waiting. She glanced up as I entered, a small smile crossing her face. “Ah, Amara. You’re just in time,” she said, motioning for me to sit beside her. "I have important news to share with you. The Duke of Somerset has arrived in the kingdom, and he is quite the catch. He's highly eligible, and I believe he would make a suitable match for you." I stayed silent, not wanting to think about the prospect of an arranged marriage. However, I knew better than to argue with my mother on such matters. "I want you to look your best for the ball tonight," she continued, gesturing towards her ladies-in-waiting. "They will help you choose the perfect gown and style your hair. We need to make a good impression." I bit my lip, trying to hide my disappointment. The thought of being paraded around like a prize for some wealthy duke to snatch up wasn't exactly my idea of a good time. Nevertheless, I put on a smile and nodded obediently. As I stood up to leave, my mother added a final comment. "Oh, and Amara, I must insist that you stay away from that nobleman. He's been known to be a bit of a troublemaker, and I don't want any scandal ruining our chances with the Duke." I raised an eyebrow at her warning, feeling slightly surprised at how quick the governess had reported the incident to her. "I'll keep that in mind, Mother," I replied with a hint of sarcasm. "I'll make sure to steer clear of him. Unless, of course, you think it would make the Duke jealous." My mother shot me a stern, disapproving look, clearly unamused by my remark. With that, I left her chambers and headed to the room where the ladies-in-waiting were waiting for me. They surrounded me, chattering excitedly about the upcoming ball and what gowns would suit me best. I let them fuss over me, trying to ignore the nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I was being treated like a pawn in some elaborate game. I took a deep breath and tried to relax, knowing that they would soon be bustling around me, attending to every detail of my appearance. I was led to a small area where a screen had been set up for privacy. The ladies began to undress me, and I merely stood there as they spoke amongst themselves, working in perfect unison. One of the ladies took out a long piece of fabric, which I recognized as the corset. As she wrapped it around my torso, I took a deep breath and held it, bracing myself for the sensation of being tightly cinched. With each tug of the laces, I felt my waistline shrink, my ribs being compressed, and my breath becoming shallower. It was an uncomfortable experience, but one that was necessary to achieve the desired hourglass figure. Once the corset was tightly laced, the ladies helped me into my gown. It was a masterpiece of fabric and design, with layers of silk and velvet cascading down to the floor. The bodice was adorned with intricate beading and embroidery, and the sleeves were long and flowing. The color was a deep shade of blue, which complemented my fair complexion and dark hair. They began to work on my hair, teasing it into intricate braids and twists that would stay in place throughout the evening. They added touches of gold thread and jeweled pins, making my hair sparkle in the candlelight. Finally, it was time for my makeup. They dusted a light layer of rice powder onto my face to give it a porcelain appearance and applied a hint of rouge to my cheeks for a healthy glow. They added a touch of kohl around my eyes, making them appear larger and more expressive, and a sweep of mascara. The final touch was a delicate pink gloss on my lips. As I stood admiring myself in the mirror, one of the ladies-in-waiting stepped forward and adjusted my dress. At first, I thought she was fixing something, but then I realized she was pulling the bodice down slightly, revealing more of my cleavage. I couldn't help but feel pleased with the result. The ladies-in-waiting shared a look of satisfaction before the sound of horses and carriage wheels could be heard outside. With one last look in the mirror, I followed the ladies out of the room and made my way down the grand staircase. The sound of my heels clicking against the marble floor echoed through the hall, and I could feel the weight of the gown swaying with each step. As I descended the staircase, I spotted my mother and father waiting for me at the bottom. My mother's eyes widened at the sight of me in the stunning gown, while my father's expression remained stern and unimpressed. I scanned the room for my older brother Benjamin, but he was nowhere to be found. "Where is Benjamin?" I asked. My father let out an exasperated sigh. "He's unaccounted for, as always," he snapped. My mother, always quick to diffuse any tension regarding her son, chimed in. "I'm sure he's just caught up with his friends. He'll be here soon enough." I simply shrugged in response, knowing full well that my brother was likely indulging in his own selfish desires. My mother linked her arm with mine and began leading me towards the door. "Come, dear, the carriage is waiting," she said, her voice sweet and melodious. As we stepped outside, I could see the grand carriage awaiting us. The driver, dressed in a fine uniform, held the door open for us. I climbed inside and settled onto the plush velvet seats, my dress billowing out around me. Throughout the entirety of the trip, my mother chattered on about the events of the day, but I was lost in my own thoughts.
