The next morning, I found myself sitting in a grand chamber, surrounded by my family and the Duke and his entourage. The atmosphere was tense, and everyone looked on edge, their faces stern and unreadable. The Duke was flanked by his advisors, and they stood stiffly behind him, their expressions guarded. My mother had instructed me to sit still and remain silent, and I followed her instructions dutifully. She had also warned me to be on my best behavior and to listen closely, for this was no ordinary matter. Both sides of the conflict had their reputations at stake.
Earlier that morning, before the meeting, my Governess had brought in the day's newspaper. As she handed it to my mother, I noticed a look of concern flicker across her face. My father snatched the paper out of her hands, his eyes scanning the front page. To my surprise, there was a headline that read, "Scandal at the Royal Ball: Duke and Prince's Disgraceful Display." The article, written by an anonymous source, had recounted the events of the previous night in vivid detail, but had also included a scathing commentary on the behavior of the Duke and the Prince. The anonymous author did not hold back their opinions, describing the Duke's behavior as "nothing short of barbaric" and the Prince's behavior as "disgraceful and unbecoming of his status." They went on to comment on the "shameful display of entitlement and arrogance" displayed by both men, and noted that such behavior had no place in civilized society, let alone at a royal ball. The article had clearly struck a nerve with my family, as they sat stiffly in the grand chamber, awaiting the arrival of the Duke and his entourage.
The Duke and my father exchanged curt nods, and then the King spoke up. "I have called this meeting to address the unfortunate incident that occurred last night," he said, his voice stern and commanding. "I expect an explanation from both parties." As my father spoke, I could feel the tension in the room rising. The Duke and the Prince were sitting across from each other, their expressions carefully controlled, but I could see the anger simmering just beneath the surface. Benjamin tried to play it off as a simple disagreement, but the Duke's stony silence spoke volumes. I could tell that he was seething with anger, but he was doing his best to hide it.
The Duke finally spoke up, his voice smooth and controlled. "Your Majesty, I regret that things got out of hand last night. It was a simple disagreement, but I should have handled it better." His words were measured and diplomatic, but I could sense the underlying anger and frustration in his tone.
The Prince nodded in agreement, but his eyes were hard and unforgiving. "Yes, Your Majesty, it was just a minor disagreement. We have already put the matter behind us and moved on."
It was rather obvious that both men were still angry at each other, but they were doing their best to keep up appearances in front of the King and the rest of the court. It was clear that they were both trying to salvage their reputations and maintain their standing in the eyes of the royal court.
The King leaned forward in his chair, his eyes scanning the room as he spoke. "Gentlemen, as you both know, the reputation of our court is of the utmost importance. The events of last night have caused a great deal of concern and consternation among our subjects. It is imperative that we do everything in our power to repair the damage that has been done."
The Duke and the Prince both nodded, their faces grave and serious.
The King continued, "Therefore, I propose a solution that will not only repair our reputation but also bring our two great houses closer together." He paused for a moment, as if gathering his thoughts. "The Duke shall take as his bride, the Princess Amara."
There was a moment of stunned silence in the room. I could feel my heart racing in my chest as I looked around at the faces of my family and the Duke's entourage. My mother didn't seem opposed to the idea. In fact, she looked rather pleased, as if she had been expecting something like this. She leaned forward, her eyes fixed on the Duke, waiting for his response. The Duke himself was staring at the King, his expression unreadable. For a moment, it seemed as if he was going to protest, but then he nodded, his eyes flickering briefly to mine.
Benjamin, on the other hand, looked as if he had been struck by lightning. "Father, I cannot agree to this," he protested. "I cannot allow my sister to be sacrificed for my mistake. It is my responsibility to make amends, not hers." The Duke's face remained impassive, but I could see a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes at the Prince’s displeasure. He had gotten what he wanted, and he knew it.
The King looked at Benjamin sternly. "Prince Benjamin, you know the stakes of this matter. The Duke's reputation has been damaged, and yours as well. This is an opportunity to repair that damage and restore your honor." Benjamin opened his mouth to protest, but the King cut him off. "That is my final word on the matter. The Duke will marry Amara. That is all."
And just like that, my fate had been sealed by the King's decree.
As the meeting came to an end, the Duke rose from his seat and made his way to the door without so much as a glance in my direction. I watched him go, feeling a sense of disappointment and unease settle over me. It was clear that I was nothing more than a pawn in this game of politics and reputation.
As I stood up to leave, my mother approached me with a small smile on her face. "Don't worry, my dear. This marriage will be good for us. The Duke is a powerful ally to have, and you will make for an excellent Duchess." I forced a smile in return. I knew that nothing I said would have any significance. I had no choice in the matter. “The wedding will be in one months’ time. You have much to prepare for."
