Chapter 1
My heart beat anxiously as I heard the howls and barks in the night.
The night of the mating moon.
It was the night that those who had come of age in the pack would finally find their mates. I was happy and scared all at the same time as I looked around me at those who had already been united with their other halves.
My heart kept beating at an uneven pace as I waited for my mate to appear. I could feel the pull of the moon's energy but my mate was nowhere to be found.
What if I didn't have a mate? I wondered as I began panicking within myself.
“Oh my goodness! Alpha Magnus is my mate!” I heard one girl squeal to her friend. She didn't look very put together. I could only imagine that she and Alpha Magnus hadn't wasted anytime in getting familiar with each other.
The night of the mating moon was a ritual that involved all the packs. She wouldn't be the only one getting mated to an Alpha. I wasn't greedy, my mate didn't have to be a powerful Alpha. All I wanted was someone that would love me unconditionally.
Soon, hours had passed and the better part of the packs had found their mates and retreated to their homes. Still I was left pacing by the fire, wondering where my mate was.
Just as I continued battling with my inner thoughts, I picked up on a scent. My head whipped quickly in the direction it had come from. Something within urged me to follow the scent and I did.
As I continued to follow the scent, it grew stronger and clearer. It called to me and made my chest ache to be united with the man from whom the scent came. I ended up deeper into the forest in an old cabin.
The night was old and extremely quiet. With my heightened senses I could easily pick up on the sounds coming from inside the cabin. My heart began pounding in my chest even though I hadn't opened the door.
I could hear the faint sounds of moans and cries of pleasure coming from inside. It was a sound that I was all too familiar with, a sound that had become common among the pack.
I pressed my ear against the door, trying to block out the noise but the sounds only grew louder, more intense. I could hear the rhythmic thumping of bodies against the bed, the wet, slithering noises of lips and tongues and skin.
When I couldn't take it anymore, I opened the door. What I was going to see couldn't possibly be any worse. At least, that was what I thought.
Behind the door was Darren, the Alpha of my own pack and beneath him was Lydia, one of the most promiscuous girls in the pack. She had slept with every man that was interested in sharing the bed with her.
And she just so happened to be my stepsister.
But that wasn't what made the scene so terrible, it was the look that passed between me and Alpha Darren. I felt a pull in my chest and my wolf growled in response to his presence, yearning for him.
It was brief but it was a confirmation, he was my mate.
My mate, in bed with another woman. Not just another woman, but my own step sister.
He smirked as a look of realization passed over his handsome features. He knew too and he knew what this night meant, yet, he'd chosen to spend it with some other woman.
He pulled himself up and put his pants on, his eyes never leaving mine as I stood there not knowing what to say or do.
“What the f**k do you want Alyria? Get out!” Lydia yelled at me as she gave me a look that could kill. I stared in shock at how she spoke to me. Lydia and I had never had a good relationship.
“Relax love” Darren said before he approached me.
“Hello, Alyria…” he said to me “or should I say mate?”
Lydia looked between the two of us as she understood what was happening.
“That's dumb. I should be your mate” She said with a yawn. I completely ignored her.
“H–how could you?” I asked in a small weak voice
“Well, I regret to inform you, but I have no need of a mate.” His voice was filled with contempt. “I have Lydia here to satisfy me”
I looked at Lydia who had pulled her dress back on already and she smirked at me. I turned back to Darren feeling disgust.
Was that all he thought of his mate? A woman to satisfy his needs?
I had been raised to believe that the mate bond was sacred, and that mates were meant to be loyal and faithful to each other. But how could I be loyal to a man who was already being unfaithful to me? A man who saw me as nothing more than an object of satisfaction, a man who didn't even want me.
"How can you say that?" I demanded, my voice shaking with anger. "You're my mate. You're supposed to love and protect me, not treat me like an object"
Darren shrugged nonchalantly. "That's the way it is, Alyria. You're just going to have to accept it. I'm the Alpha, and I don't need a mate to tie me down” His voice was powerful and imposing.
“Don't you feel anything at all for me? Do I really mean nothing to you?”
“I hate to break it to you but I really have no concern for you. The sooner you learn that the better”
Then he paused as he looked at me from top to bottom like he was inspecting something before purchasing it.
“I guess I will be needing a Luna later. When that time comes, I'll let you know. You can leave now, I'd like to get back to what I was doing before you so rudely interrupted”
Grabbed Lydia closer to him and he began kissing her neck as his hands roamed her petite yet voluptuous frame. I felt sick to my stomach just watching them.
I heard Lydia moan out and then giggle. Darren paused to look at me as I remained frozen in place.
“You're free to join us”
“No, we don't need her, she's a dumb little girl” Lydia replied and I just lost it.
I closed the gap to them and dragged Lydia off Darren. She landed on the bed while I pulled Darren outside. I knew he was much stronger than me. He could've chosen to remain in place but he seemed amused by the entire scenario.
I faced him feeling a burning rage that I'd never felt before.
“You are not my mate! You're a disgrace to the entire pack!”
“Careful now Alyria” His voice was low and dangerous, but I didn't care. All I could see was red. I had always had a crush on Darren, but he was Alpha and I was too shy to say anything. Lydia knew this. I'd never once imagined that Darren would end up being my mate.
“You've dishonored the pack and you've dishonored me. I can't believe I thought you were a good person. I looked up to you!” The anger and disappointment in my voice was evident
I couldn't even get a reaction out of Darren he was completely unfazed.
“I am your Alpha and I will not have you disrespect me. Mate or not”
“Just go away Alyria. You're such a brat” Lydia spoke as she finally came outside. “No wonder your mum died. She couldn't stand being your mother”
Without thinking, I charged for Lydia even as tears filled my eyes. I hit her to the ground and clawed at her face. She screamed out and Darren pulled me off of her.
“You're a terrible person with a bitter heart. You'll never find love or be loved!” I screamed out as Darren continued to hold onto me.
“Get a hold of yourself Alyria! What has gotten into you?”
“Me?! What has gotten into me? My own mate was busy sleeping with my step sister. And you have shown no remorse”
“You're overreacting”
Before I could reply to him again, I heard a growl as Darren let go of me. I turned around to see that Lydia had transformed into her wolf form.
“Lydia… calm down” Darren said slowly as Lydia stared me dead in the eyes.
It all happened so fast. I didn't realize how close I'd gotten to the edge of the forest. Lydia pushed me, I struggled to regain my balance, but it was too late. Lydia pounced again, and I fell.
I screamed as I tumbled down the rocky cliff, my body being scratched and pulled by stones and branches as I went. Finally, my back hit the cold hard bottom, knocking the air out of me completely.
As I lay there, in a pool of my own blood and with broken bones, with my last breath, I swore that if by some miracle I lived, I would have my vengeance.
