Elisa’s POV
I walked out of the building while my feet dragging as I thought about everything I had done and how I had been a perfect woman and wife for the Carter but was repaid with a push out of their house.
I feel my bones melting as I immediately step on the soil of the outside world as a single woman, a used and divorced wife of the Carter, it keeps looking unreal. I have endured all with the hope of having a perfect marriage.
I looked at the gate for the last time before I rang the number I had forsaken for the past three years. “hello!” I said and the man on the other side of the phone was silent for a while before responding to me.
“How much?” he said as that was the command I have always given over the years I do make the call but this time. It’s different.
“I am right in front of the Carter gate, send your men to pick me up in ten minutes, I want to go home!” I said and without allowing the man to get out of his shock state, I hung up!
It’s time to make Carter pay for everything they have done.
It’s time to answer the name I was born to answer. Elisa Gray Mackenzie. I did not wait for five minutes before the cars drove in and the man walked down and opened the door for me. “thanks” I said and he hurriedly bowed and closed the door after me and ran to his side and drove off while my tears rushed down like never before.
It came back to me like a flash that I have lived for nothing but shame and disrespect. I have washed off my pride and stooped so slow for the one-sided love that I have heard for a man I met on a trip.
Now. I have to return to what I ran off from. I have to return to the family I abandoned. What a shame!
TWO YEARS LATER
I walked out of the board meeting as I gave the last order and went straight to my office. Assuming the post of the CEO of the Mackenzie Empire of the West and being the first youngest female CEO puts me on a spot of the most ruthless and most successful lady that can’t be joked with.
I have strived for every second that I showed up to build a name, not just for the sake of my father's empire but to make a mark that nobody can cross.
I have long forgotten how it is to be human as all I know how to be now is a businesswoman and a workaholic, at least, that is where I find my peace now.
“Big boss, I think you might want to see this!” Ben said as he walked in with a card in his hand, after looking at him briefly, I buried myself in my work and ignored his chatty behavior. “Boss, it seems urgent, you won’t want to ignore this as you are ignoring me!” he said and I rolled my eyes.
“you know I am ignoring you!” I said and he walked over to my side and placed the card in front of me forcing me to sit back and look at him and the card with frustration. Ben Clifford, is a very chatty personal assistant that is as annoying as a fly.
I sometimes wonder why I kept him around still but he is still the most sane human that has worked with me, In my first six months, I was forced to change my assistant like ten times or more until I found him.
He was able to understand and work with me, he supported and gave me a pull when necessary.
I love that!
“This is from the devil himself, I heard he handpicked his guest, you won’t want to be on his bad side even though you both are probably ranked the same in hell!” he said and I chuckled.
“Who is this devil? And how sure are you that I don’t have a rank above him in hell? I am the more devilishly as I have heard from your colleagues.” I said and he walked over to the fridge and picked up a table water and a straw.
“Those are the words of the silly lazy ones who have never encountered the world of other businessmen, they think as a woman, you are meant to be calmer. Well, I won’t lie, you are ruthless!” he said and I laughed.
He sure knows how to make me angry with a smile. “Who is the devil that sent this?” I asked as I picked up the plain invite, it was not so attractive and it was nothing by the feature of a dry life domineering business lord.
“Lord Damien Carlton”
I was taken aback as I looked at the card again and indeed, it was no other person but him. He is the only one that makes my hair stand at the mention of his name. We have never met in person despite working together on a few projects and being the ruler of regions.
I look forward to meeting the only man who is ranked above me in the whole city of Belgium. I opened the card and it was an invite, a VIP invite to his party in his hometown.
“Bell heel!” I didn’t know when I exclaimed after reading through, Ben, who was arranging a bottle of water and straw by my side was shocked that he moved backward as a result.
“What is it?” he asked and I looked at him but my words were lost. I could not possibly tell him that lord Damien had arranged for a party in a town I hate the most and to crown it all. He arranged it for the day I have hated the most, the day I divorced my ex-husband!
“how important do you think this party will be?” I immediately adjusted my mood and handed over the card to him as I collected the water and inserted the straw while I took a long sip.
“Boss, don’t tell me you are planning on ignoring this invite. This is the first time he is organizing a party and you know he has two big projects at hand and he will be using the opportunity to scout for the best of the best empire to collaborate with.
We might never have the chance to get the contract if we don’t attend this banquet and you will even have an upper hand if you were to attend, you are the devil controlling the east. He will consider that and pick us above all boss!”
He said and I looked at him. “How well do you love your job, Ben Clifford?
” I asked and he immediately shrieked and composed himself.
