Chapter 3

Elisa’s pov “boss, I was just trying to convince you to see more reasons as to why we are to attend the party. He is the devil of the north and south and he has a veto power in the west as well, you know Bell Heel is his as well. We can’t afford to ignore his invite!” he replied with a more professional look and I smiled. “I never said I was not going, clear up my physical meetings tomorrow and for the next week and get back to me!” I said. He immediately pouted like a drama queen! “Boss, you just wanted to test my skill of convincing you, isn’t it?” he said and I laughed. “That is what I pay you for!” I said and he pouted again before readjusting. “I will arranger our departure now, boss!” he said and I nodded and he was almost at the door when I remembered a very important thing. “Hold on, Ben!” I said and knew he froze immediately. “What am I seeing in the report of the insurance department, do they think I am now dumb?” I asked and looked at him as he turned slowly and matched up to me. “Boss, there is more to the missing report and funds!” he said and I balanced to listen to all he must have found out. “Over the years, Mr. Sam has been in charge and he knew well how the funds are mismanaged and he didn’t care as he was the one who benefited most from it. But even since you took over, things have changed a bit but not on his side as he still mounts pressure on the department as he is a family of yours and there is nothing we can do!” He said and I was disappointed for the first time in his thought. “how long have you known?” I asked and he looked at me scratching her neck. “a pretty long while but I can’t do anything” he said and I was pretty pissed off. “you can't do anything, that is great because you won’t be able to do anything once I deduct thirty percent of your salary for the next six months and no bonus for you or any staff in this company. I am trying to recover the loss of the insurance department since everyone knows and keeps quiet about it.” I said and his soul weakened immediately. “boss!” he stammered but I ignored him as I stood up and handed him a list of names, “make sure I don’t see the ones on the next payroll, they are termites and I don’t have the time to have parasites work for me!” I said “Okay boss, I will get to it immediately,” he said and bowed before, “Well, watch Mr. Sam closely these days, we will be setting him a trap of honey. He loves money, then more money for the man.” I said and he nodded. He walked out straight leaving me with my work and I looked at the clock and sighed as it was my quick time of rest. My mind could not rest as it kept lingering on the invite and the city that was going to host the banquet. Bell heel! That very city where I left my pains and never looked back, not at the sorrow or the revenge, as I decided to leave it all to focus on my family but now, I doubt if I will sit still anymore. 9:00 pm. I was still working on some files when Ben walked in not looking as official as an employee should look. “Ben, lately, you have been working on resigning!” I said without looking at him and he sighed before adjusting and walking up to me. “boss, it’s 9; 00 pm already! The official hour ends by 6:00 pm according to the company’s rules but none of the employees could leave after I announced the deduction of bonus till eternity.” He said and I chuckled at the pretentious act of my staff. “I am not stopping any of you from leaving, this is not the first time I am staying in the office late,” I said and he walked to my briefcase and started packing up. I was surprised for a while before I thought I might use the rest. “earlier when you were on a conference call with our partner in Italy, your grandpa has been calling for ages to know when you are planning to come home and honor the dinner he had organized for you.” He said and immediately I checked the clock again and I was shocked to know I had stood that old man up for more than three hours! “Pack up, let go home!” I said and stood up as I looked back at the see-through walls, the city was as bright as all the night companies were up and bubbling. It is so beautiful to watch the bright colors and very relaxing after a long time of work. Ben was fast with what he was doing and he sent me out to the car that was already packed at the entrance. Looking at the staff, I could see tiredness and sorrow in their eyes. They should not blame me. They deserve it all. “Tell them, their activities in the next month might unlock their bonus back!” I said and entered the car. Ben was so happy and I looked at him and ruined it. “Expect you!” I said and closed the door and color drained on his face as I could tell he must have called me devil mistress as the car drove off and sent me off to the Hyatt residency. I walked out with my briefcase and immediately activated the busy face as I made a fake call as I walked in. “hello, is the contract ready?” I asked as I sighted the old man Mackenzie standing in the hall looking at the painting of his late wife. Annoying love birds! Even after her death, he still looks at her painting and compliments her beauty and keeps telling me to be more ladylike just like my grandmother. He never misses his son and daughter-in-law who died years after. I wanted to sneak to my room and avoid him but just when I walked closer, he turned around and looked at me while I talked louder like I was on a call. “Hey, young woman!” he called out and I stopped immediately as I could tell he was not so happy with me. “Hey, big man!” I replied and surrendered as I removed the phone from my ear. “Were you planning to trick me with that fake call again?” he yelled as he hit his cane on the floor and the sound resounded in the room. “Answer me, Elisa!” he yelled.
