The Distance Between Hearts.
Chapter 1: California Sunsets The first thing Kelsie Adams remembered about home was the smell of salt in the air. Every morning, sunlight spilled through her bedroom window in golden ribbons, warming the pale yellow walls her mother had painted before she was born. From her window, she could see the tops of swaying palm trees and, if she leaned far enough, a sliver of the Pacific Ocean glittering in the distance. California had always felt endless. When Kelsie was seven years old, she would ride her bicycle down the quiet streets of their neighborhood with her hair flying behind her like a banner. Her laughter carried on the ocean breeze as she raced her younger brother, Noah, toward the corner ice cream shop. "You're cheating!" Noah shouted one afternoon. Kelsie laughed. "I'm winning. That's different." "No fair. You're older." "Sounds like an excuse." Their playful arguments often ended with melted ice cream and complaints from their mother, Melanie Adams, who somehow always knew when they'd tracked sand into the house. "Kelsie Marie Adams," her mother would call from the kitchen. "Take those shoes off before you bring half the beach inside." "Sorry, Mom." The apology never sounded convincing because she was usually laughing while saying it. The Adams family wasn't wealthy. They weren't famous. They weren't perfect. But they were happy. David Adams worked long hours as a contractor. His hands were rough from years of labor, but he never came home without asking his children about their day. Melanie worked part-time at the local library. It was there that Kelsie's love for books began. Every Friday after school, she'd sit cross-legged between towering shelves while her mother organized returns. Stories became her favorite place to disappear. She loved romances most of all. Even as a young girl, she found herself drawn to tales of people finding each other against impossible odds. Her mother often teased her. "One day you're going to expect some poor man to sweep you off your feet like those heroes in your books." Kelsie grinned. "Maybe he will." Her mother rolled her eyes affectionately. "Life doesn't work like novels." At seven years old, Kelsie had believed her mother was wrong. At twenty-six, she wasn't so sure. But those lessons were still years away. For now, her world was simple. School. Family. Books. Photography. And sunsets. Especially sunsets. Whenever the sky turned pink and gold, Kelsie would run to the beach carrying the little camera her grandfather had given her for her tenth birthday. She captured everything. Waves crashing against rocks. Children building sandcastles. Seagulls gliding through the evening air. The photographs weren't perfect. Neither was she. But they made her happy. Her father framed many of them and hung them around the house. "You've got an eye for beauty," he told her one evening. Kelsie stared at the framed photo in surprise. "You really think so?" "I know so." His confidence in her mattered more than he probably realized. As the years passed, childhood slowly gave way to adolescence. Friendships changed. Dreams evolved. The future began creeping closer. But through every stage of her life, one thing remained constant. Home. The Adams family dinner table. The sound of Noah teasing her. Her mother's warm hugs. Her father's steady encouragement. Kelsie often assumed those things would always be there. Most people do. They never realize how precious ordinary moments are until they're memories. One evening, just before her seventeenth birthday, Kelsie sat on the beach watching the sunset paint the horizon in shades of orange and pink. She raised her camera. Click. Another memory preserved forever. She didn't know it then. She couldn't have known. But one day she would leave California behind. One day she would drive across the country searching for a new beginning. And one day, in a place she had never imagined calling home, she would meet a man whose smile would change everything. But for now, she was simply Kelsie Adams. A girl sitting beside the ocean. Dreaming about the future. Watching the sun disappear beyond the horizon. And believing that somewhere out there, life was preparing something wonderful for her.
