whisper chapter 1
The Woman in the Rain The rain fell over Ebonridge like a curtain of silver threads. Most people hated the city's endless storms. Adrian Cole loved them. Rain hid things. It blurred sharp edges and softened ugly truths. At twenty-eight, Adrian had learned that life was easier when things remained hidden. He worked as a reporter for the Ebonridge Gazette, spending his days chasing stories and his nights wondering why his own life felt so empty. His apartment was small. His salary was average. His future was uncertain. Every morning he woke to the same alarm, drank the same bitter coffee, and boarded the same crowded train. The routine was slowly suffocating him. That particular Thursday evening, Adrian left the newspaper office later than usual. His editor, Marcus Vale, had dumped three unfinished articles onto his desk before disappearing for dinner. "You're the best writer I've got," Marcus had said. It sounded like a compliment. It felt like punishment. By the time Adrian finally stepped outside, darkness had swallowed the city. Rain hammered the sidewalks. Cars splashed through puddles. People rushed beneath umbrellas. Adrian shoved his hands into his coat pockets and started walking home. Then he saw her. A woman stood beneath a flickering streetlight. Alone. Motionless. Watching the rain. Something about her felt wrong. Not dangerous. Different. Like a melody played in the wrong key. She wore a black dress beneath a long coat. Dark hair flowed over her shoulders. Even from a distance, Adrian could see she was beautiful. The kind of beauty that made people stare without realizing it. For some reason, she wasn't carrying an umbrella. Rain soaked her hair and clothes. Yet she didn't seem bothered. As Adrian passed, her eyes lifted. Their gazes met. His heart stumbled. It was ridiculous. He didn't believe in love at first sight. But something happened in that moment. Something he couldn't explain. The woman smiled. Not a friendly smile. Not a flirtatious one. A knowing smile. As if she recognized him. Then she turned and walked away. Adrian stood frozen. "What was that?" he muttered. The woman disappeared into the crowd. And somehow, he couldn't stop thinking about her. The next morning began normally. Until Marcus called him into his office. Marcus was a large man with sharp eyes and permanent stress lines. "Got a job for you." Adrian sighed. "Of course you do." Marcus tossed a file onto the desk. "A wealthy businessman was found dead last night." Adrian opened the folder. The victim's name was Victor Kane. One of the richest men in the city. "What happened?" "Police say heart attack." "And you don't believe them." "I never believe official stories." Marcus leaned forward. "Find out what really happened." Adrian nodded. Investigations were his specialty. Within an hour he was heading toward Kane Industries. The massive glass tower dominated the downtown skyline. Employees moved through the lobby like nervous ants. Everyone seemed tense. Everyone seemed afraid. Especially Victor Kane's assistant. Olivia Stone. She was elegant, professional, and clearly exhausted. "You want to ask questions?" she said. "That's usually how interviews work." She rolled her eyes. Victor's death had already attracted attention. Apparently, Adrian wasn't the first reporter to arrive. He spent the next hour collecting information. Nothing unusual emerged. No enemies. No threats. No obvious suspects. Yet something felt off. Victor Kane had been healthy. Successful. Powerful. People like him rarely died unexpectedly. As Adrian prepared to leave, Olivia stopped him. "There is one thing." "What?" "He received a visitor before he died." Adrian paused. "Who?" Olivia hesitated. "A woman." His pulse quickened. "What woman?" She handed him a security photograph. Adrian stared at the image. His breath caught. It was her. The woman from the rain. That evening Adrian couldn't stop looking at the photograph. Who was she? Why had she visited Victor Kane? And why did she keep appearing in his life? His questions multiplied when he received a text message from an unknown number. Meet me. Midnight. Riverside Bridge. Come alone. No signature. No explanation. Common sense told him to ignore it. Curiosity won. At midnight Adrian stood beneath Riverside Bridge. Fog drifted across the water. The city lights shimmered in the distance. Footsteps approached. He turned. And there she was. The woman from the photograph. The woman from the rain. She stepped from the shadows. Beautiful. Confident. Dangerous. "Hello, Adrian." His eyes widened. "How do you know my name?" She smiled. "I know a lot about you." "Who are you?" "Selene Hart." Her voice was smooth and hypnotic. Adrian forced himself to stay calm. "Did you know Victor Kane?" "Yes." "Did you kill him?" Selene laughed softly. "No." "You expect me to believe that?" "No." The honesty surprised him. Rain began falling again. Tiny droplets sparkled in her dark hair. For several seconds neither spoke. Then Selene stepped closer. Close enough for Adrian to smell her perfume. Close enough to make his heartbeat quicken. "You should stop investigating Victor Kane." "Why?" "Because the truth is dangerous." Adrian met her gaze. "So are you." For the first time, her smile widened. "You're smarter than most men." "And you're avoiding my questions." "Perhaps." She turned to leave. "Wait." Selene stopped. "What?" Adrian took a breath. Every instinct told him he was making a mistake. But he couldn't help himself. "I'd like to see you again." The rain continued falling between them. For a moment she seemed genuinely surprised. Then she smiled. Chapter 2: Dangerous attraction Dangerous Attraction The rain continued to fall long after Selene disappeared into the darkness. Adrian remained beneath Riverside Bridge, staring at the space where she had stood moments earlier. Who was she? And why did he already feel as though his life had become tangled with hers? The next morning, sleep-deprived and distracted, Adrian arrived at the Gazette office. His editor, Marcus Vale, noticed immediately. "You look terrible." "Thank you." "You find something?" Adrian hesitated. Part of him wanted to tell Marcus everything. The mysterious woman. The midnight meeting. The warning. But something stopped him. "I found a lead," Adrian said carefully. Marcus nodded. "Then follow it." As Adrian walked back to his desk, Olivia Stone appeared beside him. Victor Kane's assistant looked even more nervous than before. "I need to talk to you." "What happened?" She glanced around to make sure nobody was listening. "Someone has been asking questions about you." Adrian frowned. "Who?" "I don't know." The answer did nothing to calm him. For the first time, he realized he wasn't simply investigating a story anymore. Someone was watching him. That evening, Adrian received another message. This time the sender wasn't anonymous. Selene Hart Meet me at Blackwood Café. 8 PM. Adrian arrived ten minutes early. The café was warm and quiet. Soft jazz played through hidden speakers. The scent of coffee filled the air. Then Selene walked in. Every conversation seemed to pause. She wore a dark red dress beneath a black coat. Elegant. Confident. Beautiful. Her eyes found Adrian immediately. "You're staring again." Adrian smiled. "You make it difficult not to." A faint blush touched her cheeks. It disappeared almost instantly. "You shouldn't say things like that." "Why?" "Because I might start believing you." For a moment, neither looked away. The attraction between them felt impossible to ignore. Dangerous. Yet strangely comforting. Hours passed as they talked. Unlike their previous meetings, Selene revealed small pieces of herself. She grew up outside the city. She loved old books. She hated thunderstorms despite constantly walking through them. She trusted very few people. Adrian noticed that every truth she shared seemed carefully chosen. There was still so much she wasn't saying. Eventually, he asked the question that had haunted him. "Were you really involved with Victor Kane?" Selene's smile faded. "I knew him." "How?" "He wasn't a good man." "What does that mean?" "It means some people appear respectable until you look closer." Adrian leaned forward. "Did he hurt someone?" Selene looked away. The silence answered him. When they finally left the café, the city streets were nearly empty. A cold wind swept through the night. As they walked together, Selene suddenly grabbed Adrian's arm. "Stop." "What?" She looked across the street. A black car sat parked in the shadows. Its engine was running. Nobody inside moved. Yet something felt wrong. "Keep walking," Selene whispered. "Do you know them?" "They're not here by accident." Fear crept into Adrian's chest. The car remained motionless. Watching. Waiting. The moment they turned a corner, Selene pulled him into a narrow alley. "What is happening?" "Someone followed us." "Why?" "Because you're getting too close." "To what?" Her eyes met his. "To the truth." The sound of footsteps echoed nearby. Both froze. The footsteps grew louder. Closer. Adrian's heartbeat thundered. Then a figure appeared at the entrance of the alley. A man. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed entirely in black. He scanned the area before continuing down the street. Moments later he disappeared. Selene released a breath. "They found us." "Who are they?" "I can't explain everything yet." Frustration flashed across Adrian's face. "Then when?" "When I know you're safe." "You're asking me to trust you." "Yes." "And you're giving me almost nothing." Selene looked genuinely conflicted. "I know." For several seconds neither spoke. Then she reached for his hand. The simple gesture surprised him. Her fingers trembled slightly. For the first time since meeting her, she looked afraid. Not for herself. For him. The following days became a blur of unanswered questions. Adrian continued investigating Victor Kane's death. The deeper he dug, the stranger things became. Financial records were missing. Witnesses changed their stories. Employees refused to talk. Someone was clearly hiding something. Then another name appeared. Gabriel King. A powerful businessman with close ties to Kane. And according to confidential records, Gabriel had secretly met Victor only hours before his death. Adrian finally felt he was getting somewhere. Unfortunately, someone else knew it too. Late that night, he returned home to find his apartment door open. His blood ran cold. He never left it unlocked. Carefully, he stepped inside. Nothing appeared to be stolen. Nothing appeared broken. But on his kitchen table sat a single envelope. Inside was one sentence: Walk away while you still can. No signature. No explanation. Just a threat. Adrian immediately called Selene. She answered on the first ring. "What's wrong?" He told her everything. Her response came instantly. "I'm coming over." Twenty minutes later she arrived. The concern on her face was impossible to hide. She examined the apartment before sitting beside him. Neither spoke for a while. Finally, Adrian broke the silence. "Who are these people?" Selene stared at the warning note. "The kind of people who believe fear is power." "And Victor Kane was connected to them?" "Yes." The answer came so quickly that Adrian knew it was true. "Then tell me everything." Selene looked exhausted. Like someone carrying a burden for too long. Slowly she turned toward him. "I will." Adrian waited. But instead of speaking, Selene reached up and touched his face. Her fingers were warm. Gentle. "Before I tell you the truth," she whispered, "you need to understand something." "What?" Her eyes softened. "The moment you learn it, your life changes forever." The room fell silent. Outside, rain struck the windows once again. And for the first time, Adrian realized that meeting Selene beneath that streetlight had never been an accident. Someone had wanted their paths to cross. Someone had been planning this from the beginning. And whatever secret Selene carried was far bigger than either of them imagined.
