whisper chapter 5

448 Words
The night after everything changed, I couldn’t sleep. The silence of my room felt heavier than usual, like the walls were listening to my thoughts and refusing to answer back. I kept replaying the words from Chapter 4 in my mind—the truth I had uncovered, the secret I was never meant to know. And yet… I still didn’t understand everything. I turned over in bed, gripping the blanket tightly. Why me? That question followed me everywhere now. Around midnight, a soft knock came at my door. My heart jumped. “Come in,” I whispered. The door opened slowly, and there he was again. Kael. He looked different tonight—tired, like he hadn’t slept either. His eyes didn’t carry their usual calm strength. Instead, there was something heavier… something unreadable. “You shouldn’t be awake,” he said quietly. “I could say the same to you,” I replied. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. For a moment, neither of us spoke. The silence between us wasn’t empty this time—it was tense, like something was about to break. Kael finally looked at me. “They’ve started searching for you,” he said. My breath caught. “Who?” He hesitated. Just for a second. But it was enough. “The people behind everything,” he said carefully. “And they won’t stop until they find you.” My fingers curled into the bedsheet. “So it’s true…” I whispered. “I really am part of this.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “You were always part of it,” he said. “You just didn’t know.” A cold feeling spread through my chest. I looked away. “Then why hide it from me all this time?” That question seemed to hurt him more than I expected. “I was trying to protect you,” he said finally. I let out a bitter laugh. “Protect me? From what—my own life?” Kael took a step closer, then stopped like he was afraid to come any nearer. “From the truth,” he said. “Because once you know everything… there’s no going back.” Those words settled between us like a curse. I slowly stood up from the bed, my voice shaking but firm. “I don’t want to be protected anymore,” I said. “I want answers.” For the first time, Kael looked unsure. And that scared me more than anything else. Because Kael never looked unsure. Outside the window, the wind shifted violently, rattling the glass. And in that moment… I felt it. Something was coming. And it was already close.
