The Secret She Carried The rain hammered against Adrian's apartment windows. The warning note still lay on the table between them. Neither Adrian nor Selene spoke for several moments. Finally, Selene broke the silence. "There are things about me that most people don't know." Adrian looked directly into her eyes. "I'm listening." Selene took a deep breath. "Three years ago, I worked for Victor Kane." The confession shocked him. "You worked for him?" She nodded. "At first, I believed he was a respectable businessman. Wealthy. Influential. Successful." "And he wasn't?" A bitter smile crossed her face. "No." She stood and walked toward the window. "The company was a cover." "A cover for what?" "Blackmail. Corruption. Bribery." Adrian stared. "You're serious." "I wish I wasn't." Lightning flashed outside. For a moment the room glowed white. Then darkness returned. "Victor Kane wasn't the real leader," Selene continued. "There was someone above him." "Who?" "Gabriel King." Adrian felt a chill. The same Gabriel King whose name had appeared in his investigation. "He's the one behind everything?" "Most of it." Selene folded her arms. "He controls politicians, businessmen, and criminals. People fear him." "And you exposed him?" "I tried." Years earlier, Selene had discovered secret files hidden within Kane Industries. The files contained evidence of illegal deals and ruined lives. Victor Kane and Gabriel King had built their empire by destroying anyone who stood in their way. Instead of ignoring what she found, Selene copied the evidence. Then she ran. For months she lived in fear. Changing cities. Changing jobs. Changing identities. But Gabriel's people never stopped looking for her. "They wanted the files back," she explained. "And you still have them?" "Yes." Adrian's eyes widened. "You've been carrying evidence against powerful criminals for years?" Selene nodded. "They've killed to protect those secrets." The reality of the situation settled heavily between them. This was bigger than a simple murder investigation. Much bigger. The next morning Adrian visited the newspaper office. Marcus Vale was already waiting. His expression was unusually serious. "We've got a problem." "What happened?" Marcus handed him a newspaper. The headline froze Adrian in place. LOCAL REPORTER UNDER INVESTIGATION His name appeared in the article. The accusations were false. Someone was trying to destroy his reputation. "They're attacking you now," Marcus said. Adrian clenched his jaw. "Gabriel King." Marcus looked surprised. "You know who is responsible?" "Not yet." But Adrian was beginning to understand. Anyone who got close to the truth became a target. Later that evening, Adrian met Olivia Stone again. Victor Kane's former assistant seemed frightened. She constantly glanced over her shoulder. "What's wrong?" Adrian asked. "They know I've been talking to you." "Who?" Olivia lowered her voice. "Gabriel King." The name sent a shiver down his spine. Olivia reached into her purse and pulled out a small flash drive. "I stole this before Victor died." Adrian stared at it. "What is it?" "Evidence." His pulse quickened. "Evidence of what?" "Everything." Before Olivia could say more, tires screeched outside. A black SUV stopped beside the café. Three men stepped out. All dressed in dark clothing. All moving with purpose. Olivia's face turned pale. "They found me." Adrian grabbed the flash drive. "Come on." The two rushed through the back exit. Rain poured from the sky. They ran through narrow streets and crowded sidewalks. The men followed. Closer. Closer. Closer. Adrian's lungs burned. Olivia struggled to keep up. Then a car suddenly appeared beside them. The passenger door flew open. "Get in!" It was Selene. Without hesitation, Adrian and Olivia jumped inside. The car sped away. The pursuers vanished behind them. For several minutes nobody spoke. Only the sound of rain filled the vehicle. Finally, Selene glanced at Olivia. "I didn't expect to see you again." Olivia managed a weak smile. "I didn't expect to survive this long." Selene drove toward an abandoned warehouse near the river. It was one of her safe locations. A place nobody knew about. Once inside, Adrian inserted the flash drive into a laptop. The screen filled with documents. Bank transfers. Secret agreements. Photographs. Names. Hundreds of names. Evidence connected Gabriel King to crimes stretching back nearly a decade. Even murder. Olivia stared at the screen. "This is what Victor was protecting." Adrian nodded. "And this is what got him killed." The room fell silent. Everyone knew what that meant. Victor Kane's death hadn't been natural. Someone had silenced him. Suddenly Selene's phone rang. The number was unknown. She answered cautiously. "Hello?" A familiar male voice replied. Cold. Confident. Dangerous. "Good evening, Selene." The color drained from her face. Gabriel King. He laughed softly. "You've caused me quite a few problems." Selene remained silent. "I know where you are." Adrian's heart raced. Gabriel continued. "And soon, I'll have what belongs to me." The call ended. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The warehouse suddenly felt very small. Very exposed. Adrian looked at Selene. For the first time since meeting her, he saw genuine fear in her eyes. Not fear for herself. Fear for everyone around her. Because Gabriel King wasn't hunting evidence anymore. He was hunting them. And the war had finally begun.
