Sophia led them through the winding streets of the city, dodging pedestrians and cars with ease. Elis and Elena followed closely behind, trying to keep up with her pace.
As they walked, Elis couldn't help but notice that Sophia seemed to know the city like the back of her hand. She navigated through alleys and side streets, avoiding main roads and major intersections.
After a few minutes of walking, Sophia stopped in front of a nondescript building. It was a small, run-down apartment complex with a faded sign that read "Oakwood Apartments".
"Welcome to our safe house," Sophia said, smiling.
Elis raised an eyebrow. "A safe house?"
Sophia nodded. "Yes, it's a place where you can stay for a while, until it's safe for you to go back home."
Elena looked at Elis, her eyes questioning. "Do you trust her?" she whispered.
Elis shrugged. "I don't know. But we don't have many options right now."
Sophia led them into the building, and they rode the creaky elevator to the third floor. The apartment was small, but it was clean and well-furnished.
Sophia gestured for them to sit down, and they collapsed onto the couch, exhausted.
"So, who are you?" Elis asked Sophia, trying to get some answers.
Sophia smiled, and for a moment, Elis saw a glimmer of vulnerability in her eyes. "I'm a friend of your family's," she said. "I've been watching over you for a while now."
Elena's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Sophia leaned forward, her eyes locked on theirs. "Your family has been in a lot of trouble, Elis," she said. "Trouble that you can't even imagine. But I'm here to help you, to keep you safe."
Elis felt a surge of skepticism. "Why?" he asked. "Why would you do that?"
Sophia's smile faltered, and for a moment, Elis saw a glimmer of pain in her eyes. "Because I owe it to your family," she said. "They helped me when I needed it most. Now it's my turn to repay them."
Elena leaned forward, her eyes locked on Sophia's. "What do you mean?" she asked.
Sophia hesitated, and for a moment, Elis thought she was going to shut down. But then, she took a deep breath and began to talk.
"I used to work for a organization that...that did some bad things," she said. "Things that I'm not proud of. But your family helped me get out, helped me start over. Now I'm trying to make things right, to help others who are in the same situation."
Elis's eyes widened as he listened to Sophia's story. He had never imagined that she was involved in something like that.
As Sophia finished her story, Elis felt a sense of gratitude towards her. She was trying to make things right, to help them.
But just as they were starting to relax, they heard a loud knock at the door.
Sophia's eyes snapped towards the door, and she quickly got up to answer it.
"Who is it?" she called out.
There was a pause, and then a low voice replied, "It's me, Marcus. I need to talk to you."
Sophia's eyes flicked towards Elis and Elena, and then back to the door.
"I don't think that's a good idea," she said.
But it was too late. The door burst open, and Marcus stood in the doorway, a look of determination on his face.
"I think it's time we had a talk," he said.
Elis's heart sank as he saw Marcus's expression. He knew that they were in trouble.
As Marcus stepped into the room, Elis noticed that he was holding a small device in his hand. It looked like a smartphone, but there was something different about it.
"What's that?" Elis asked, trying to distract Marcus.
Marcus smiled, and his eyes seemed to gleam with amusement. "This is a little device that can hack into any security system," he said. "It's very useful for people like me."
Elis's eyes widened as he realized the implications. "You're a hacker," he said.
Marcus nodded. "I'm a man of many talents," he said.
As Elis looked at Marcus, he realized that they were in grave danger. They had to get out of there, and fast.
But as they turned to make a run for it, Sophia blocked their path.
"Wait," she said. "Let's hear what Marcus has to say."
Elis's eyes narrowed. "Why?" he asked.
Sophia smiled, and her eyes seemed to gleam with a hint of mischief. "Because I think Marcus has something to offer us," she said. "Something that could change everything."
As Elis looked at Sophia, he realized that she was playing a game. A game that he didn't understand.
And as they stood there, frozen in uncertainty, Elis knew that their fate hung in the balance.
