CHAPTER 6

HENRY'S POV I had stepped outside from the house to escape the sobs of my mom as my father stayed behind to console her. It was night time but tonight was unusually dark and gloomy. To be clear, I wasn't the cause of my mother's tears, I wasn't that type of kid. I was a handful sometimes but not to the extent of bringing tears to my mother's eyes. I had stepped outside to make a phone call, a call I have attempted for the 10th time but no response from the receiver. "Arya Miles, wherever you are, you need to pick up". I said anxiously as I dialled her number again. I was worried sick about her, she was my older and only sister. I placed the phone on my left ear as I waited for her to pick up but it kept on ringing. "I am just thirteen and not ready to be an only child". I sighed, my spirit was getting low as I listened to the last few seconds of my phone ring before the call ended. "Gosh, what are you going to say to mom now Henry?" I whispered to myself confused. I had been the only semblance of calmness in the house before I stepped out to call Arya again. Mom and dad had tried severally to reach her but her phone kept on ringing without a response. She gets off at work by 5 PM and gets home at 5:30 PM. She should have been home by now. Mom and Dad called the coffee shop to inquire about her whereabouts but were informed she had closed from work and gone home. That was 3 hours ago. Mom wanted to go in search of her and dad wanted to go with mom but I won't let them both leave the house with just me alone. I strongly believed she would come back home and they stayed back. She just turned eighteen a couple of months ago, maybe this is one of those adult phases she was going through. "I believe you are alive Arya but where could you possibly be at this time?" I looked at my apple watch in the dark and it was very late. 10:52 PM to be precise, my theory was beginning to fall apart. "Arya doesn't stay out this late without informing mom and dad first about it unless..." I cut myself short, as I thought about what I was saying briefly. "...unless she is out partying with her friend Jessica!" A light bulb switched on inside of my head. I needed to call Jessica! "I need Jessica's phone number, mom should have it!" I exclaimed in joy, as I felt a surge of positive energy rush through me. "Come inside Henry, the Sheriff just called. They found Arya's car." Dad said from behind me, his voice shaky as my spirit sank instantly. I knew what that could possibly mean and it hit me right in my chest. It threw my theory of Arya being with Jessica off, as I turned to look at my father who was still standing by the opened door. I was speechless. I couldn't bring myself to ask where Arya was because I feared the worst. Father's silence spoke volumes as his eyes were wet. I didn't know when mine suddenly became wet as I ran towards him. He embraced me before taking me inside the house to find mom sobbing inconsolably. She was all alone in the living room and we needed to be together as a family. "Where is my sister?" I finally summoned up the courage to ask, as tears trickled down my cheeks. "I don't know, only her abandoned car was found by the road side". Father revealed after a brief pause. "THEN SHE IS ALIVE! I BELIEVE SHE IS ALIVE!" I said optimistically as my spirit sprang up. Until she was found dead, she was still alive! Dad didn't say anything as he stared at me with his teary eyes. Mom for her part paid no attention to the both of us as she continued sobbing. I sat quietly in the living room after that, trying to process everything that had happened. The sound of my mom crying made me uneasy and emotional until it was overshadowed by another disturbing sound. "OPEN UP!" "OPEN UP!" "OPEN UP!" I heard loud bangs on the front door repeatedly. They were so loud, I covered both my ears. The noise must have woken up the entire neighbourhood. "Hurry, come over here Henry!" Father whispered to me as he grabbed hold of mother's hand and pulled her off the floor before taking my hand and leading us quickly up the flight of stairs. "Who is that father, could it be the Sheriff?" I asked naively but father didn't respond. I had never seen him this focused in my entire life. "Quickly, get into the bedroom and crouch". My father ordered, as he led Mom and I into their bedroom. The lights in their bedroom were all turned off and it was dark and safe, safe enough for me to crawl to the edge of the bedroom window to spy on who was outside banging our front door. I could hear dad moving things around in the room, trying to re-enforce the bedroom door in the dark. I took a peek through the window outside and could see our front yard was covered with gangsters. "There are gangsters outside our house!" I revealed, shocked by the sight. I think they heard me. "OPEN UP! I KNOW YOU ARE INSIDE! BRING HER OUT TO US!" I heard one of the gangsters order us from downstairs. "Come Henry, stay away from the window". My father instructed, as he pulled me away from it. "COME OUT ARYA, UNLESS WE WILL COME IN!" He barked. Most inhabitants of the city were scared of the gangs and rightfully so. I wondered what the gangs wanted with Arya? "TIMES UP!" "YOU HAVE HAD YOUR CHANCE TO COME OUT, NOW WE WILL COME IN AND GET YOU!" He barked some more as I heard the sound of the bangs on the front door increase. They were going to break in anytime soon and I was worried. "Smash!" I heard the sound of our shattered bedroom window. A big rock had been thrown into the bedroom, smashing the window glass. "LET'S GO! GET UP AND LET'S GET OUT OF HERE!" Father yelled in the dark as more rocks smashed into the bedroom. We barely made it out of the room without being struck by any of them as we made our way down the flight of stairs. I tripped by mistake, as I came tumbling down the flight of stairs, hurting my ankle in the process. "HENRY ARE YOU ALRIGHT?!" Mother panicked, as she called out my name from the top of the stairs. Father was the first to get to me as cried out in pain. "My ankle, I hurt my ankle!" I said, holding on to it. The front door burst open as mother made her way to me and the gangs came rushing in. "Please don't hurt my family. Please you can take whatever you want but please don't hurt my family". I heard father beg, as he quickly covered mom and I with his body. "WE WILL DO AS WE PLEASE, YOU HEAR ME!" "QUICKLY SEARCH THE REST OF THE HOUSE FOR HER!" I recognized the voice of Caesar say, who was one of the gangsters. The whole house at this point was being torn apart by the gangs as things were being trashed and broken. I wished they would stop and leave us alone but I knew the gangs were thugs and criminals and would not. "She is not here Caesar. We have searched the entire house, we are leaving". One of the gangster's said, as he walked away. He was soon followed by the others, as they left one after the other leaving Caesar alone standing in the living room. He crouched, so he could come low to our position as we laid on the wooden floor. "When Arya returns, please do leave a message for us with her. Tell her she should see us ASAP, we have unfinished business". He whispered with a smirk, before standing up and taking his leave.
