Silence surrounded her as she stood alone in the cell she was locked in. She was tired, miserable, hungry, and dehydrated. Princess Mitena dragged her chains around the small cell as she looked around wondering if it was a dream or reality.
She was the beautiful princess of the kingdom, with curves in all the right places. She was loved by her parents and the entire kingdom. But that had changed: she was a prisoner now. It had been two days since she was imprisoned. A guard had come earlier to deliver a cup of juice and a slice of bread. She had swallowed her pride and taken the juice and bread but it was not enough to hold an adult wolf like her.
“No, this is not happening,” she said as she slumped miserably to the floor. Memories assailed her as she sat on the cold floor in clothes so dirty that they could have been taken from a pig sty. She had been accused of killing her husband’s brother, and all evidence gathered so far pointed to her. She had the support of no one, not even her husband.
She couldn’t believe that the one person she had loved with her life without reservations could betray her that way. Her husband, Cusa, had betrayed her most unimaginably. She had options of men she could have married but she chose him, the son of an Alpha from one of the packs in her father’s kingdom.
Princess Mitena had met her husband, Cusa, during her university years. She had fallen in love with him because of the way he had sweetly and patiently pursued her. She had fallen head over heels in love with him without reservations. He was not her fated mate but she had chosen him. She put aside their social status and married him. They had been married for three years. Three years of manipulations from her husband and his family.
Three years of overlooking her husband’s excesses for the sake of love. If only she had known and realized earlier that she had set herself up for disaster. The happy life she thought she had carefully built for herself was nothing but a sham. A figment of her own imagination. A pain too big to express rose in her chest making her raise her chained hands to her chest.
Mitena suddenly heard footsteps approaching the cell. She quickly got on her feet and stood regally. She was determined that no matter what she was going through inside, she wasn’t going to let anyone see that she was broken. She wasn’t going to give her that satisfaction.
Anger coiled inside Mitena as Koko, her husband’s mistress came to view. Koko smiled like the devil she was before she opened the cell door gently, as if savouring the moment, then stepped into the cell with her smile still intact.
Koko was the worst female Mitena had ever met. She pretended to be fragile and unassuming, while she was, in reality, the devil incarnate. Koko had saved Cusa’s life some months ago when he had gone hunting alone and got himself cornered by rogues. Koko herself had gotten injured, and Cusa had no option but to bring her back with him.
Ever since Koko arrived at the pack, it had been one crisis after another. She and Cusa had been having affairs, and Mitena couldn’t take it as it affected her each time they went at each other like rabbits in heat. Mitena and Cusa had fallen out over Koko. Cusa was nonchalant about the whole thing. To him, he was enjoying himself. The most painful part of the situation was that Cusa’s family supported Koko against Mitena.
“What are you doing here?” Mitena asked without hiding her anger. There was no need to. Koko needed to know she was the last person she wanted to see.
“Don’t tell me that you don’t want to see me,” Koko said smiling wickedly.
“You should know that you are the last person I want to see,” Mitena hissed.
“Oh! Don’t worry. I promise you that I am the last person you will see,” Koko said.
‘’What do you mean?” Mitena asked. Koko’s words perfectly pierced the fog of anger.
“I mean nothing,’’ Koko said with her smile still in place.
“I think you should leave my presence now Koko,” Mitena said with the aura of a princess.
Koko’s expression changed to anger. It infuriated her that Mitena was still maintaining her composure like the princess she was even in prison and in chains. Mitena was everything Koko would never be, and it never failed to make her jealous.
“I actually pity you. You can't have the love of the man you want because I deserve him, and now you are here, and your parents are about to lose their throne because of you, what a fate!” Koko mocked Mitena out of jealousy.
“I don’t care about you and Cusa. You both deserve each other. You both can go to hell and rot into smoke for all I care,” Mitena spat in anger.
“Really? Is Princess Mitena finally giving us her blessings?” Koko laughed bitterly.
“You are evil,” Mitena said gritting her teeth in anger.
“No Mitena. You are the evil one. You are evil because you think you can have everything. It is such a pity that your parents are going down for your mistakes,” Koko said with her voice dripping with mockery.
“I killed no one and my parents will be vindicated because the truth will eventually prevail,” Mitena said heatedly.
“What truth Mitena? The truth can only be known if I decide that it would be known but I wouldn’t be stupid enough to let that happen. Don’t you think?” Koko said smiling. She made sure that her face was inches away from Mitena so that she could see that she was gloating.
It took Mitena several seconds to process what Koko had said. The moment she realized what Koko said, her eyes widened. Rage consumed her. She was enraged at herself for not realizing sooner that she was living among enemies. She was angry at herself for falling in love with the wrong person. She saw all the signs after they got married but she ignored them all for the sake of love. A one-sided love. Cusa brought Koko into their lives and refused to let her go.
She was angry that her blindness to Cusa and his family’s shortcomings was going to make her father lose his throne. She had been used and taken for granted for three years by Cusa and his family. Mitena gritted her teeth so much in anger that Koko could hear it. It gave Koko a lot of dark satisfaction to see that she could reel Mitena in.
“It was you. You set me up,” Mitena said in anger.
“Oh! She catches up. Brilliant girl,” Koko said still in mockery.
”You are going to regret this. I am going to make sure you rue the day you crossed me,” Mitena threatened as her eyes became red from the intensity of her anger.
“I am so scared right now. Please forgive me, princess,” Koko mocked, then laughed in Mitena’s face.
Mitena raised her hand to strike Koko, not bothered about the chains on her hands, but she stopped when a sharp pain suddenly made her go to her knees. She coughed aggressively which made her raise her chained hands to her mouth. She was stunned when she removed her hands and saw blood.
“Poor baby. I guess you are dying right?” Koko mocked.
“What do you mean?” Mitena asked weakly.
“Let me break it down to you. The juice you drank earlier contained wolf bant. Your life is hanging by a thread. In seconds you will be gone,” Koko said as if he was talking about the weather.
Mitena tried to say something, but she couldn’t. She fell to the side as pain engulfed her. Tears fell down her face not from the pain in her stomach but from the pain in her heart. The pain of betrayal and regret. Her breathing soon became shallow, followed by numbness.
“Don’t worry. I will let the entire kingdom know that you committed suicide out of guilt,” Koko said with an evil laugh as Mitena began to fall into the darkness that was pulling her in.
Even though she was dying, Mitena held on to the bitterness that surrounded her heart. She took her last breath in great sorrow.
