The knock on the door woke Mitena from her sleep. She had not intended to sleep till dawn, but her mind and body had worked the previous day tirelessly, so she had needed the rest to have herself very composed for what lay ahead.
“Come in,” Mitena said as she sleepily rubbed sleep out of her eyes.
Leotie opened the door gently and stepped in. She smiled a little as Mitena stretched like a cat. That action was something Leotie had seen her do several times, and it never ceased to amaze her how someone was capable of stretching like that.
“Good morning Your Highness,” Leotie greeted Mitena with her smile still intact.
“Good morning Leotie. Hope you had a good night's rest and you are settling in, okay?” Mitena asked.
“Yes, Your Highness. The room I was given is very comfortable,” Leotie said.
“Good!” Mitena said then got out of bed.
“I am here to tell you that your husband is back in the pack,” Leotie said.
“Really? When did he get back?” Mitena asked.
“He was sighted at the borders some minutes ago. I heard the Alpha telling some guards to go and meet him at once. They should be almost here,” Leotie said.
“Good. I should go meet him then,” Mitena said standing with her back straight with determination.
It was the day that everything started. In her past life, it was the day that Koko would be brought to the pack. She sighed heavily to prepare herself mentally for the battle ahead.
Accompanied by Leotie, Mitena left his room to seek her husband out. She was almost at the gates when her husband and some guards walked in.
Her husband, Cusa, was holding a beautiful and curvaceous lady by the side. She was totally leaning on him with her eyes closed.
Mitena was barely able to suppress her scoff. Her experience from her previous life had actually let her understand the fact that the lady her husband was holding was pretending. If theatrics were a person, it would be Koko. She made people eat out of her hands with her acting.
“Sweetheart. You…” Mitena started but Cusa only swept past her as if she were a ghost. He didn't see her at all as all his concentration and concern were on the beautiful girl he was holding.
Mitena's heart hurt so much. She wasn't hurting because he ignored her but she was hurting because in her previous life, she hadn't seen how low her husband thought of her. She had been stringing herself along with a husband who only saw her as a means to an end.
“Someone should get me the doctor right now,” Cusa shouted at no one in particular.
“I think the best thing is to get her to the hospital Cusa. Bringing the doctor here to the house might not be a good idea,” the Beta, Keme suggested.
“What do you mean?” Cusa asked.
“If she is taken to the hospital, she will receive better care. She might need equipment that cannot be moved to the house. I can see that she was stabbed in the stomach,” Keme explained.
“Fine. I will get her there immediately,” Cusa said sounding very worried.
Mitena shook her head as the pain of her foolishness almost overtook her. Cusa had never shown any type of panic when it came to her. She wouldn't have believed that Cusa was capable of caring that much for anyone.
She had fallen sick one day, and he had told her to take care of herself and left the house earlier than he normally would. In her previous life, she had formed a lot of excuses in her head as to why he never cared about her.
Cusa picked Koko up bridal style and started walking briskly towards the hospital. Mitena stood there as Cusa, Keme and the guards exited the gates.
“Are you okay?” Leotie asked her as she sensed Mitena's emotion.
“I am fine. Let's give them like five minutes head start, then we follow,” Mitena replied to Leotie with her eyes trained on the gate.
She would have loved to just turn around and go straight into the house without a care in the world but she knew she had to follow the script from her past life and see things through. When she was sure that they must have gotten to the hospital, she and Leotie followed.
She got to the hospital to find Cusa pacing in the waiting room. He didn't see her at first but when he did, he rushed towards her as if he suddenly remembered that he had a wife.
“Oh, Mitena. You are here?” Cusa asked. It was a question that made Mitena grit her teeth in annoyance. The question sounded like a realization that she actually existed.
“Yes, I am here. What is going on Cusa?” Mitena asked. She was trying her very best to pretend as if the whole situation was affecting her.
“It is a crazy thing that happened out there Mitena. You wouldn't believe it,” Cusa said running his hands through his hair.
“Try me,” Mitena said folding her hands on her chest.
“I decided to go hunting as usual but before I knew what was happening, I was surrounded by wolves. The two guards who went with me were injected in the neck with wolf’s bane. Then one of the rogues threw a knife straight at me. The female in there jumped out of nowhere and took the knife for me, right in her stomach. Luckily, the other guards arrived and the rogues ran away. She is fighting for her life right now. I am so scared,” Cusa explained with worry dripping from every word.
“She is a wolf right? Shouldn't her wolf heal her?” Mitena asked trying to sound jealous.
“We later discovered that the knife was covered in wolf’s bane,” Cusa answered impatiently.
“Shouldn't you take her to her family instead? Would they not be looking for her?” Mitena asked.
“She doesn't have family. The rogues that almost killed me killed her entire family,” Cusa said as he was beginning to get uncomfortable with Mitena's questions.
“What you are saying now is that she will be staying in this pack?” Mitena asked.
To Cusa's ears, she sounded very jealous which annoyed him to no end. Meanwhile, to Mitena, she wasn't sure if she sounded jealous enough. Her emotions churned as flashbacks from her past life rushed into her mind.
She couldn't stop beating herself for being a fool. She had allowed herself to be used, and it led to the destruction of her loyal maid, herself, and her parents.
“Mitena you need to understand that she has nowhere else to go. Besides, she saved my life. We should be grateful to her,” Cusa said.
“If you are going to make a decision like that, I guess you should consult me. I should have a say in whether she stays or leaves,” Mitena said.
“It was my life she saved not yours. If you had seen the bravery with which she did it, you wouldn't be here saying what you are saying right now,” Cusa said.
Mitena snorted. She knew Koko was a good actress. She would have easily pulled off the act of saving Prince Charming.
“That is not enough reason to…” Mitena was pouting and glaring. She was trying everything to stay in character. Cusa cut her short.
“Mitena, you have to understand that I owe her my life. It is only fair that I let her stay in this pack. If you truly love me, you will support this move of mine,” Cusa said lowering his voice.
In her previous life, Mitena had always fallen for the trick. She stared at him for a second or two before slowly nodding.
She had to let him believe that like every other time in the past, his persuasion had worked. When Cusa finally hugged her and smiled, she let out a sinister smile. They were all playing a game but the difference was that she was several steps ahead!
