“You said you had something to show me Anders,” Mitena said after they left the motherless home.
“Yes, but it is not with me now. We need to set up a place to meet so that I can retrieve it,” Anders said.
“Does what you are about to show me have anything to do with where we are coming from?” Mitena asked.
“No. But it actually has something to do with you,” Anders said.
“Okay. Why don't you go ahead and retrieve it? Leotie and I will wait for you at the amusement park. I will not be able to concentrate because I will keep thinking about what you have to show me,” Mitena said, and Anders nodded, then walked off in the direction of the house while Mitena and Leotie turned in the opposite direction to the amusement park.
There was no one around when they got to the amusement park. It was early afternoon and most people would probably be at work.
“Did you notice the condition of most of those kids?” Mitena asked Leotie.
“Yes. Most of them looked malnourished and their clothes were worn,” Leotie said.
“Three months ago, I had an argument with my father because he refused to grant me access to some palace resources for the orphans. Where did all the clothes and food go?” Mitena asked thoughtfully.
“I do not think it is reasonable to say they are actually selling them to enrich themselves,” Leotie said.
“If you know that family very well, you will know that nothing you say of them is unreasonable,” Mitena scoffed.
She had done everything in the past to please her husband's family but they still hated her. She knew them very well, they had no love in their hearts to give. If they couldn't love their daughter-in-law, how would they love orphans?
“They are supposed to look after those kids but they are not doing that, yet they divert funds meant for them. How wicked!” Leotie said angrily.
“They don't care about anyone. All they think about is themselves. They are mean, selfish, and very self-centered. All I need is evidence of their diversion of the funds, and they are done for,” Mitena said.
She and Leotie sat there in silence lost in thought. They were both thinking of the best way to get evidence of misappropriation of funds in the pack.
“A penny for your thoughts, ladies,” Anders said as he arrived.
“That was fast,” Leotie said as she and Mitena turned to Anders.
“No, I wasn't fast. You both were just so lost in thought that you lost track of time,” Anders said smiling teasingly.
“You have such a beautiful smile. You should smile more,” Leotie said and that immediately made Anders wipe the smile off his face.
Leotie's words brought a surge of memory to him. Only one person had praised his smile every day, and it had been the highlight of his day until…
“Anders are you okay?” Mitena asked tapping him on the arm.
“Yes, I, I, em. I am fine. I was just lost in thought there,” Anders stammered.
“Are you sure?” Mitena asked.
“Yes. So this is what I wanted to show you,” Anders said quickly changing the topic as he raised the sound recorder in his hand.
“Where did you get that from?” Leotie asked.
“I gave it to him,” Mitena answered.
“That belongs to the queen,” Leotie said like an accusation.
“It used to belong to the queen. She gave it to me,” Mitena said and Leotie quickly relaxed. She was in the queen's employ for a long time, and she was used to serving the queen.
“I am sorry,” Leotie apologized.
“It is okay. I understand,” Mitena said giving her a small smile to show her that she wasn't upset.
“So. Back to the recorder. I think you both should relax and listen,” Anders said, and then touched a few buttons on the recorder, and it began to play.
Mitena kept shaking her head as she heard her father-in-law, mother-in-law and her husband discuss her. They had talked about making sure she got no evidence to show their atrocities.
“Where did you get that from?” Leotie asked. She sounded very impressed.
“This is from the Alpha's study,” Anders said proudly.
“How were you able to get in there?” Mitena asked bewildered.
“I have my ways,” Anders replied.
“I think I should give this to my parents immediately. We should present this to the parliament immediately,” Mitena said passionately.
“No. This is not enough evidence,” Anders said shaking his head in disagreement.
“What do you mean? This is enough to indicate that they are hiding something,” Mitena argued.
“Yes, they are hiding something. What are they hiding?” Anders asked.
“But you heard them,” Mitena said.
“The parliament deals with facts not speculations. Of course, you can use this to table your case before the parliament, but it is not enough evidence to put them in trouble, especially if they have people in the parliament who are their backups,” Anders said.
“The parliament is air-tight when it comes to corruption. People in the parliament are trusted men and women,” Mitena said.
“You will be very surprised to know eventually that the people you call virtuous are nothing but animals in human clothing,” Anders said as if he had a bitter pill in his mouth.
“No, I do not agree with you. I was brought up to understand that those in the parliament are men and women of integrity,” Mitena insisted.
“I am sorry to disappoint you Your Highness. I think it is time you prepared your mind for any type of disappointment. In the course of your pursuit for revenge, you are bound to unearth some things that might be far too surprising for you to stomach,” Anders said, shrugging.
“Still I think I need my parents to listen to this,” Mitena said stubbornly.
“Of course, this is to further convince them but I am sure that your parents will understand that this is not enough to indict them,” Anders said.
“I will go to the palace tomorrow to inform them and you both are coming with me,” Mitena said.
“Yes, Your Highness,” both Anders and Leotie said.
All the way back to the house, Mitena couldn't shake off Anders' words that there were probably people in the parliament who had the back of Cusa and his family.
Leotie and Anders stopped at the door as Mitena proceeded into the house. She walked up the stairs without even looking sideways. She didn't reply to the greetings of maids and servants as they greeted her; she was too wrapped up in her thoughts.
“She is just too proud and full of herself,” she heard a maid grumble and Mitena immediately turned to the maid with anger in her eyes.
In her past life, she would have ignored that disrespect and just turned around to apologize and explain why she had not answered them in a very humble voice but she was past that now.
“The last time I checked, it is your right to greet me because I am far above you and it is my right to decide if I want to answer or not. Next time you say something like that about me, I will have your tongue removed,” Mitena said and the maid's eyes widened in surprise.
They had gotten away with disrespecting her in the past, so they were so used to doing what they liked that her action was a rude shock.
As Mitena was going into her room, she heard laughter coming from the room next door. It was obviously her husband, Cusa, and the injured female, Koko, laughing as if there was a comedian in there entertaining them.
When she heard the door handle turning, she didn't move, she just stood there and waited for who was going to step out.
The door opened all the way and Cusa stepped out looking like the happiest man ever. But the moment he saw her, the mirth in his eyes died immediately.
“What are you doing here?” Cusa asked like an accusation.
Yeah right! Her husband asked her what she was doing at the door of their room. Besides, he looked so happy some seconds before, but the happiness was all gone just because he saw her standing there. At that moment, she felt like committing murder.
Cusa was such an i***t! If there was one thing she regretted, it was falling in love with him. To her, Cusa was a mistake she had made. A mistake she was going to correct soon.
