Chapter 9 IT WAS THE END OF THE weekend. None of the regulars were there and the weekend crew was, again, their typical bland selves, to say it nicely. Nobody talked to him and he never heard them talk to each other either. Carter noticed Kinley didn’t come back Sunday. It bothered him the way Claire talked to her and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. His mother had come both days, but she simply sat quietly, or occasionally talked on her phone to give an excuse to one friend or another on why she wouldn’t be at the club. He figured it had to have been killing her to stay away, but thought it was likely she was avoiding the judgement and humiliation of having a son who tried to kill himself.
