EVERYDAY CARTER WORKED harder and harder. Weeks turned into a month, and then another. His family came frequently, including Rodney and Ms. Deborah, excluding Wayne. Group therapy with the family continued and it wasn’t as bad as Carter expected. While everyone walked on eggshells at first, it quickly grew more comfortable. Carter was happy to be alive and awake, and it showed. His family voiced their concerns about him wanting to find Kinley, because they thought he was going to be hurt when he did. Claire pointed out that Kinley had never once called or visited him since he left the hospital, and was calmly shut down by Dr. Mayers, “This topic obviously upsets your brother, let’s focus on the topic at hand.” So he quit talking about her to them, but he never stopped thinking
