Night fell over Blackwood Territory like a blade.
The full moon rose above the mountains, round and silver and merciless. It bled light through the windows of the Luna suite and painted everything white. Even the black marble looked like bone.
I stood barefoot in the center of the room. Same blue dress, now patched and torn from yesterday’s trial. The claiming mark on my shoulder pulsed like a second heartbeat. Hot. Demanding. Like it was trying to tear its way out of my skin.
Three days. Three trials. This was the last one.
Spirit.
If my wolf didn’t rise by midnight, the elders would execute me on the stones. Pack law. No exceptions. Not even for the Alpha King’s mate.
A knock, soft then gone. Darius entered without waiting for permission. Of course he didn’t. He was the law.
Black shirt. Black pants. No armor. No weapons. Just him and the storm in his gold eyes. He looked at me like I was something fragile and something dangerous all at once.
“Full moon is high,” he said. Voice low. No greeting. Alphas didn’t waste words when death was watching. “Elders are waiting in the courtyard. The whole pack is there.”
My throat closed. “Then they’re waiting to watch me die.”
“They’re waiting to watch you live,” Darius corrected. He crossed the room in three strides. Stopped inches from me. Close enough that I could smell cedarwood and storm and something darker that was only him. “Big difference.”
His hand came up. Cupped my jaw. Thumb brushed over skin where his mark burned. “You felt her yesterday. In the forest. She’s there, Aria. I felt her in your pulse when I carried you back.”
“She’s sleeping,” I whispered. Tears threatened but I bit them back. “What if she doesn’t wake? What if I really am empty?”
Darius’s eyes flashed gold to black. “Then I burn this pack to ash and we leave together. But you’re not empty.”
The doors slammed open behind us. Rafe stood there, face grim. “Elders sent for you, Alpha. They won’t wait past moonrise.”
Darius didn’t turn. His eyes stayed on mine. “Tell them the Alpha King moves when he’s ready. Not when old wolves bark.”
Rafe bowed and left. The doors shut.
Silence stretched between us. The moon climbed higher outside. I could feel it pulling at my blood, at the thing sleeping under my skin. Like it knew time was running out.
“Spirit trial,” Darius said finally. “It’s not about strength or speed. It’s about surrender. Letting the wolf take control without fear.”
“How do I surrender to something I’ve never met?” I asked. Voice cracked. “Twenty years I’ve been alone in my head. Now you want me to trust a stranger?”
“You trust me,” he said. Not a question. A fact.
I looked up at him. At the scar across his throat. At the gold eyes that had looked at me like I was worth saving when everyone else called me trash. “I do.”
“Then trust her too.” His hand slid down to my shoulder. Fingers brushed over the claiming mark. Fire raced through me at his touch. “She’s not a stranger. She’s you. The part the Goddess hid until I came.”
The moonlight got brighter. Or maybe my eyes did. The claiming mark burned so hot I gasped. Silver light leaked through my dress like the mark wanted to be seen.
Darius saw it too. His jaw ticked. “It’s starting.”
“Starting what?”
“The bond is forcing her up. Your body thinks you’ll die tonight, so she’s fighting to save you.” His voice went rough. “It’ll hurt.”
Before I could ask what he meant, pain exploded through me. Like lightning under my skin. Like bones cracking and reforming. I screamed and dropped to my knees. The dress tore at the seams.
Darius caught me before I hit the floor. Lifted me in his arms like he had that first night. “Breathe, Aria. Look at me.”
I couldn’t. My vision went white. Teeth sharpened in my mouth. Claws pushed from my fingertips and shredded the marble floor. The wolf was clawing her way out and she was furious about being locked up for twenty years.
“Fight it,” Darius growled. “Or let it in. But choose. Now.”
I chose her.
The world went black.
---
Cold air. Wet grass. The scent of pine and blood and moonlight.
I opened my eyes and wasn’t in the suite anymore. I was in the courtyard. Hundreds of wolves ringed the stone arena. All of them staring at me. All of them silent.
I wasn’t on my feet. I was on four legs.
Fur covered my skin. White fur. Silver-tipped like moonlight on snow. My paws were massive. My claws dug into stone. My nose caught every scent in Blackwood Territory at once.
And in front of me stood Darius. Still human. Still in black. But his eyes were wolf-gold and his chest rose and fell like he’d been holding his breath.
The elders stood on the platform above. The old one with white fur pointed a shaking finger at me. “Impossible! Wolf-less omegas don’t shift! This is trickery!”
Darius didn’t look at them. He looked at me. At the wolf I’d become. “You did it,” he said. Only I could hear. Only the mate bond carried his voice. “You rose.”
I tried to answer. What came out was a growl. Low and deep and ancient. The sound rolled through the courtyard and every wolf dropped to one knee. Even Selena, in wolf form at the edge, bowed her head.
The elder slammed his staff down. “She’s not pack wolf! Look at her! White fur means cursed bloodline! She’ll bring doom!”
“She’ll bring dawn,” Darius snapped. He stepped forward until he stood toe to toe with my wolf form. No fear. No hesitation. “She’s not cursed. She’s rare. The Goddess hid her until the right Alpha came. Until I came.”
My wolf wanted to run. Twenty years of hiding made her want to flee. But Darius reached out. Slow. No sudden moves. His hand came up and cupped my massive jaw like he’d cupped my human face hours ago.
“Don’t run from me, Aria,” he whispered. “Not now. Not ever.”
I leaned into his touch. The mate bond snapped tight between us like a chain forged in starlight. His memories flooded me. Wars he fought alone. Nights he went to bed with no one to trust. Twenty years waiting for a wolf no one believed existed.
And my memories flooded him. Mud on my cheek. Kade’s laugh. Years of being called broken.
He flinched like I’d cut him. “No one calls you that again,” he vowed out loud. To the whole pack. “Say it and lose your tongue.”
The elder tried again. “Law is law! She shifted late! She’s unstable! She must die before the moon sets!”
Darius turned. Slow. Deliberate. Alpha power rolled off him until the air got heavy and wolves whined. “The law says unshifted omegas over twenty die. She shifted. She’s shifted. The law is satisfied.”
“She’s not a true wolf!” the elder screamed. “No lineage! No—”
Darius cut him off with a roar. Alpha roar. The sound shook the stones and made the moon vibrate. “She’s my mate! My Luna! And I am the Alpha King! My word IS law!”
Silence. Heavy and shocked.
Then, one by one, wolves started bowing. Not to Darius. To me. To the white wolf with silver eyes who’d risen from nothing.
Selena didn’t bow. She bared her teeth and lunged.
I moved without thinking. Wolf fast. Wolf strong. I met her mid-air and we crashed to the stones. She snapped at my throat but I was faster. I pinned her with one paw and the mate bond surged.
I didn’t hurt her. I just held her there until she submitted. Until her eyes went submissive and she looked away.
I was stronger than her. Not because I was born perfect. Because I’d been broken for twenty years and survived.
I let her up. She scrambled away, whining.
Darius shifted then. Massive black wolf with gold eyes. Bigger than any wolf in the courtyard. He came to my side and pressed his forehead to mine. Wolf to wolf. Mate to mate.
_Mine,_ his voice echoed in my head through the bond. _Finally. After twenty years. Mine._
I pressed back. _Yours._
The moon hit its peak. Silver light poured down and wrapped around us both. The bond sealed with heat and fire and something that felt like coming home.
When we shifted back, I was in his arms again. Human. Naked. His black shirt wrapped around me before I could be ashamed.
He carried me past the kneeling wolves. Past the silent elders. Past Selena who watched with hate and fear.
No one spoke. No one dared.
In the Luna suite, he set me on the bed gently. Then his hands came up to my face. Gold eyes burned.
“You’re not dormant anymore,” he said. Thumb brushed my cheek. “You’re awake. You’re mine. You’re Luna.”
I touched his chest. Felt his heart beating fast under my palm. “I’m scared.”
“Of what?”
“That you’ll wake up tomorrow and regret this. That I’ll fail you.”
Darius leaned down. Forehead to mine. Breath mingling. “I waited twenty years for a wolf the Goddess hid. I’m not letting you go because you’re scared. I’m not letting go at all.”
His lips came down on mine. Not soft. Not asking. Claiming. Alpha kiss. The bond flared between us and my wolf howled inside me with joy.
When he pulled back, my claiming mark glowed silver against my skin. His matched it on his chest.
“Full moon’s gift,” he murmured. “The bond is complete now. Wolf and Alpha. No more poison. No more death.”
Outside, the pack howled. One voice. Hundreds of throats. Accepting their Luna.
Darius pulled me against his chest and I let him. Because for the first time in twenty years…
I wasn’t broken. I wasn’t trash. I wasn’t alone.
I was claimed. By the Alpha King. By the Goddess. By my own wolf.
And she would never let me be hurt again.
