CHAPTER 1: THE REJECTION
The moon hung low over Silver Moon Pack, round and cruel, painting the ritual stones silver. It was mating night. The night every omega prayed for. The night your wolf chose you back. I didn’t have a wolf. Twenty years. Twenty years of waiting. Twenty years of being called broken, weak, useless. The omega with no beast. The girl the Moon Goddess forgot. The wind cut through the clearing like a knife. Autumn in Silver Moon always came early, biting through thin dresses and thinner hope. My shift was white cotton, meant for innocence, meant for new beginnings. Instead it clung to my skin and did nothing against the cold. Bare feet sank into grass wet with dew. Each step toward the center of the circle felt like walking to my own grave. Because for omegas like me, mating night was exactly that. Claim or exile. Life or death. “Look at her. She’s actually going through with it.” “Twenty years and no shift. What’s the point?” “Kade should’ve refused her. Wasting an Alpha’s touch on trash.” The whispers followed me like crows. I’d heard them since I was twelve and my wolf never came. Heard them when other girls shifted at sixteen and ran wild through the forest. Heard them when I turned eighteen and the elders told me I was “late-blooming” with eyes that said they didn’t believe it. Late-blooming. A lie we told wolf-less omegas so they wouldn’t jump off the cliffs. I kept my eyes down. If I didn’t look at them, maybe they weren’t real. Maybe this night wasn’t real. Maybe I’d wake up tomorrow in the orphan house with Mrs. Hana scolding me for dreaming too big. But the ritual stones were real. Cold granite, carved with the old symbols. The Moon. The Wolf. The Bond. My bare toes touched the first stone and ice shot up my legs. The clearing was packed. Every wolf in Silver Moon stood shoulder to shoulder, forming a circle of judgment. Eyes glowed in the dark—gold, amber, brown. Hundreds of them. All watching the omega with no beast walk to her death. Torchlight flickered and cast shadows that made their faces look cruel even when they weren’t. But tonight, they were cruel. Tonight I was the entertainment. “Stop staring at the ground, girl. Act like you have some pride.” Mrs. Hana’s voice from the crowd. She raised me after my parents died in the border wars. She meant well. But pride didn’t grow wolves. And I had none to show. I stopped three feet from the stone altar. Close enough to smell Kade’s power. Close enough to feel my heart try to crawl out of my chest. Kade stood on the altar. Six foot two of muscle and alpha power. Dark hair fell over his forehead like he was too important to bother with it. Sharp jaw. Eyes already glowing gold. The future Alpha of Silver Moon. Every she-wolf in the territory wanted him. Every she-wolf except the one he was supposed to claim tonight. He looked at me like I was trash he had to take out. Like I’d personally offended him by being born broken. “Step forward, Aria,” he said. Voice flat. Bored. Like he was reading from a list of chores. Aria. My name. He said it like a curse. I did. The stones were ice under my feet. Cold bit into my soles. My heart hammered so hard I thought it would crack my ribs and spill out onto the altar for everyone to see. How broken I really was. Pack law was simple: Alpha touches omega at mating ceremony. If the bond sparks, she’s claimed. If not, she’s rejected. And rejected omegas... they don’t live long. Exile meant death in the forest. Death by cold, by rogues, by your own wolf starving inside you until it ate you from the inside out. Kade reached for my throat. His fingers were cold. Colder than the stones. His wolf stared at me from his eyes, calculating. Judging. Finding nothing. I saw the moment he decided I was worthless. It flickered across his face before he could hide it. “Do you submit?” he asked. Ritual words. Empty words. He didn’t care about my answer. He’d already made his choice. “Yes, Alpha,” I whispered. My voice barely carried. Twenty years of being quiet made you soft. His thumb pressed against my skin. Power rolled off him, hot and heavy. It should’ve hurt. Should’ve burned. Should’ve called a wolf I didn’t have. I closed my eyes and prayed. To the Moon Goddess. To my dead parents. To anyone listening. _Please. Just one spark. Just one sign I’m not trash._ Heat poured into me from his touch. It flooded my veins, searching. Hunting. Looking for the wolf that should’ve answered. Nothing happened. For three heartbeats, the entire pack held their breath. One. Two. Three. Silence. Then Kade laughed. Low. Humiliating. The sound rolled through the clearing and hit me harder than any blow. He shoved me back and the word tore through the air like a blade: “I, Alpha Kade of Silver Moon, reject you, Aria of no rank. You have no wolf. You have no value. You are nothing to me. Nothing to this pack.” The crowd erupted. Laughter. Jeers. Someone threw mud. It hit my cheek, cold and wet. More followed. “Broken!” “Wolf-less waste!” “Run back to the orphan house where you belong!” “The Goddess skipped you for a reason!” My knees hit the stones. Not from the push. From the pain. From the bond snapping in my chest. It felt like someone reached inside me with bare hands and tore out my heart, then laughed while it bled. The Moon Goddess gave every wolf a mate. She gave me none. That was the truth they’d all known. The truth I’d tried to outrun for twenty years. Kade turned away already. Already done with me. Already reaching for Selena, the Beta’s daughter. She stepped forward with a smirk, chin high. Perfect she-wolf. Strong wolf. Fertile hips. Everything I wasn’t. Everything the pack wanted. She didn’t even look at me. I wasn’t worth her gaze anymore. “Take her,” Kade said over his shoulder. Dismissive. Like I was a piece of garbage he’d finished using. “She’s pack trash now. Do what you want with her.” Two warriors grabbed my arms. Their hands were rough. Their grip said they’d done this before. Dragged rejected omegas to the gate. To exile. To death. They pulled me toward the edge of the clearing. Toward the forest. Toward the dark trees that would swallow me whole. My feet dragged through the grass. Mud streaked my dress now. My hair fell loose from its braid. Twenty years of waiting, gone in three heartbeats. “Wait.” One word. Low. Cold. Alpha power rolled through the clearing and every wolf dropped to their knees instantly. Even Kade stumbled. Even the warriors holding me froze. The torches flickered out. Darkness swallowed us for one terrifying second. Then relit. All blue. Blue flame. The color of a King. He stepped from the shadows at the edge of the trees like he’d been there the whole time, watching. Waiting. Alpha Darius. The Alpha King. Ruler of all territories. Six foot four of muscle, scars, and power that made the air hard to breathe. Black suit. No tie. Gold eyes that burned like molten metal. A scar cut across his throat, old and white. The most feared, most wanted, most dangerous man in the wolf world. And he was looking at me. Not at Kade. Not at the pack. At me. Mud on my cheek. Torn dress. Bare feet. Broken. “Release her,” Darius said. One sentence. No one moved. Because when the Alpha King spoke, the world listened or it died. Kade forced himself upright, jaw tight. Defiance in his eyes but fear in his scent. “She’s rejected, Alpha King. Pack law says—” “I know what pack law says,” Darius cut him off. His voice didn’t raise. It didn’t need to. It rolled through the clearing like thunder anyway. He walked through the kneeling wolves like they were grass. They parted for him without thinking. He stopped in front of me. He didn’t touch me. Not yet. He just looked. Really looked. From my mud-streaked cheek, down to my bare feet bleeding from the stones, up to my eyes full of tears I refused to shed. I forced myself not to look away. If I was going to die tonight, I’d die with my head up. Then he reached out. One finger. Under my chin. Forcing me to meet his gaze. Gold met brown. Alpha met omega. King met trash. “Do you submit?” he asked. Same ritual words Kade used. But his voice was different. Low. Rough. Like it cost him to ask. Like he didn’t want to give me a choice he already knew I’d make. The whole pack gasped. The sound was like wind through dead leaves. Kade’s head snapped up. “You can’t claim a rejected omega! The bond is broken! The Goddess—” “The Goddess doesn’t make mistakes,” Darius said without looking at him. His thumb brushed my cheek, wiping away mud. The touch burned. Not with rejection. With something else. Something I didn’t have words for yet. “Which means this one isn’t rejected. She’s unclaimed.” He turned to the pack. Alpha power hit them like a physical wave. Knees hit dirt. Heads bowed. Even the elders. “I, Alpha Darius of all territories, claim Aria. She is mine. By blood. By law. By the Moon Goddess herself.” Silence. Then chaos. “That’s treason!” “She has no wolf! She’ll weaken your bloodline!” “Kade rejected her! You can’t override that!” “The elders will never allow this!” Darius ignored them. All of them. Like they were nothing. Like they’d always been nothing. He pulled me to my feet like I weighed nothing. Like I was precious instead of broken. His arm came around my waist, solid and warm. His scent hit me: cedarwood, smoke, storm. Alpha. Danger. Safety all at once. The opposite of Kade’s cold rejection. “Kade,” Darius said. Finally looked at him. Gold eyes went black. The change was terrifying. “You rejected her. Your choice. Now live with it.” He bent his head. And bit down. Not my throat. My shoulder. Right over the mate mark Kade was supposed to make. Right where the skin was still stinging from humiliation. Pain exploded through me. White hot. Then cold. Then fire. Then peace. Like every nerve in my body lit up at once and then went quiet. The mate mark burned onto my skin. Glowing red at first. Angry. Defiant. Then settling to silver. Not Kade’s mark. Darius’s. A claiming mark. A King’s mark. The pack roared. Some in rage. Some in shock. Kade lunged forward and Darius’s Beta, Rafe, stepped in his way, sword drawn. The sound of steel leaving its sheath cut through the noise. Darius didn’t even look. He just lifted me into his arms like a bride. Like I was precious instead of broken. Like I’d always been meant to be held this way. “Take me to Blackwood Territory,” he told Rafe. “Now.” As we left the clearing, Kade’s scream followed us: “She’s mine by birth! She was born for Silver Moon!” Darius’s voice was the last thing I heard before the trees swallowed us: “She was never yours. She was waiting for me.” The Alpha King rode out of Silver Moon with a rejected omega in his arms. And somewhere deep inside me, something stirred. Something quiet. Something wolf. The Moon Goddess hadn’t forgotten me after all. She’d been saving me for him. ---
