Chapter 4: RUN OR DIE

1850 Words
Dawn cracked over Blackwood Territory like a blade dragged across the sky. Silver light cut through pine trees and turned the training grounds to ice. No warmth. No mercy. Just like the trial ahead. I stood at the starting line barefoot. Same blue dress from yesterday, hem torn from the stone trial, sleeves hanging loose where Mara had stitched them. My arms still ached from lifting the granite yesterday. Every muscle screamed at me to sit down. To quit. The claiming mark on my shoulder burned hotter than ever, silver fire under my skin like it knew what was coming. Darius stood in front of me. No shirt today. Just black pants and scars that told stories I’d never be brave enough to ask about. The scar across his throat was white in the morning light. Another cut across his ribs. Proof that being Alpha King meant bleeding for it. Gold eyes scanned the course behind him, sharp and calculating like he was already planning how to catch me if I fell. A forest track stretched behind him. Twisting. Full of roots and traps and shadows that looked like teeth. Red flags marked every hundred meters, fluttering in the cold wind like warnings. “Speed trial,” he said. Voice carried to every wolf watching from the stone platforms above. It didn’t need to shout. Alpha power made sure they heard. “Rule is simple. Reach the end of the track. Wolves will chase you. If they catch you, you fail. If you cross the line first, you live.” Gasps rippled through the crowd. This wasn’t fair. This was death dressed up as a test. I could feel their eyes on me. Hundreds of them. Wolves, servants, elders. All waiting for the wolf-less omega to break. Selena stepped forward from the edge, red dress replaced with leather hunting gear that hugged her curves. Perfect she-wolf. Perfect predator. Smirk sharp enough to cut. “How generous, Alpha King. You’re giving her a head start, right? Since she can’t even run without falling?” Her words hit like arrows. I kept my eyes on the dirt. If I didn’t look at her, maybe she wasn’t real. Maybe this wasn’t real. Darius didn’t look at her. “Rule applies to all. She runs. Pack wolves chase. Three minutes head start.” “Three minutes?” Selena laughed. The sound was ugly. “She’ll be caught in thirty seconds. Maybe less. I’ll have her throat before she reaches the first flag.” “Then she dies,” Darius said flat. No emotion. Like he was stating the weather. “Unless she’s faster than your doubt.” He turned to me. Stepped close until I had to tilt my head back to see his face. Lowered his voice so only I could hear. So only I could feel the heat of his breath. “Run, Aria. Don’t look back. Don’t think. Don’t let fear slow you. Just run.” His hand came up. Cupped my cheek. Thumb brushed over skin like he was memorizing it. The claiming mark on my shoulder flared in response, like it recognized him. “Your wolf is in there. Twenty years she waited. Hidden. Protected. Let her out.” My heart hammered against my ribs. “What if she doesn’t come? What if I’m really broken?” “Then I’ll tear this forest apart root by root to find her,” he said. No hesitation. No doubt. Then louder, for all to hear: “Begin.” A horn blew. Low and mournful. The sound rolled through Blackwood Territory and set every wolf on edge. I ran. Bare feet hit frozen earth. Pain shot up my legs with every step. The dress tangled around my thighs and I yanked it up with shaking hands. Breath burned in my chest like I’d swallowed fire. Twenty years of walking, not running. Twenty years of hiding in corners and keeping my head down. My lungs weren’t made for this. Behind me, I heard them. Wolves shifting. Bones cracking. Growls starting low in their chests, then rising into something hungry. The chase had begun and I was the prey. “One minute!” Rafe called from the platform. His voice was steady but his Beta aura pressed heavy on me. Fear. Not for himself. For me. I pushed harder. Pine needles slapped my face and drew blood I didn’t feel. Roots tried to trip me and I stumbled but didn’t fall. The red flag ahead blurred through tears I refused to shed. I wouldn’t cry. Not here. Not where they could see. Kade’s laugh echoed in my head, sharp and cruel. _Wolf-less waste._ Mud hit my cheek again, phantom pain from two nights ago. _Trash._ No. Not today. Not again. “Two minutes!” Rafe shouted. His voice cracked on the words. Growls closer now. Hot breath on my neck. I risked one glance back— Selena. In wolf form. Massive gray beast with red eyes and teeth like knives. She’d shifted early. Cheating. But no one stopped her. Elders watched from the platform and did nothing. Their silence was permission. She lunged. I stumbled. Hit the ground hard. Stone cut my palm and blood welled hot and bright. I gasped and tried to push up but my arms wouldn’t hold me. The wolf was on me in one second. Teeth at my throat. Her hot breath stank of meat and hate. I squeezed my eyes shut and waited for death. Waited for teeth to sink in and end twenty years of being called broken. Nothing happened. A growl. But not Selena’s. Low. Deep. Vibrating from my chest up through my throat. It wasn’t human. It wasn’t weak. It was old. My claiming mark exploded with heat. Silver fire raced down my arms, down my legs, through every vein like liquid starlight. Pain, then power. Then silence so deep I could hear my own heartbeat. I opened my eyes. Selena had frozen. Head tilted. Confused. Like she couldn’t remember why she was attacking. Like something in her wolf recognized something in mine and pulled back. “Get up,” Darius’s voice cut through the trees. Not a command this time. An anchor. A lifeline. I did. Legs shook but held. Something moved under my skin. Something big. Something old that remembered how to run even if I didn’t. The quiet growl from last night was a roar now, caged but awake. Selena lunged again. This time I moved. Not human fast. Wolf fast. Instinct took over and my body dodged left while my mind was still catching up. Her teeth snapped on air and she snarled, confused. What was happening to me? “Three minutes!” Rafe called. “Hunt begins!” The forest exploded with wolves. Dozens of them. All faster than me. All stronger than me. All wanting me to fail so the Alpha King would look foolish for claiming trash. They poured off the platforms and into the trees, a wave of fur and teeth and gold eyes. I ran. And this time, my legs didn’t ache. They flew. The dress tore completely at the hem but I didn’t care. The earth felt different under my feet. Solid. Alive. Like it remembered me even after twenty years of forgetting myself. Wind howled past my ears and stole my breath. Trees blurred into green and brown smears. My lungs burned but my heart didn’t. Not anymore. Not with that thing inside me pushing forward, guiding my steps. Behind me, chaos. Wolves crashing into trees. Snarling at each other. Confused. Because the omega with no wolf was outpacing them. Because something in their beasts hesitated before chasing me fully. I saw the finish line. A ribbon of silver strung between two stones, gleaming in the dawn light. Fifty meters. Forty. Thirty. Each step burned my lungs but the wolf inside pushed me forward. Selena recovered and shot forward, desperate and furious. She hit my back and we went down together, rolling through dirt and leaves and blood. The world spun. She pinned me. Teeth at my throat again, this time with pure hatred. “You’ll die trash!” she snarled, spit hitting my face. “You’ll always be trash!” I looked up at her. Really looked past the perfect fur and sharp teeth. And for the first time, I didn’t see a perfect she-wolf. I saw fear. Fear of me. Fear of what I might become. Something in my chest unlocked. A door that had been locked for twenty years swung open. I shoved her off. Not with human strength. With wolf strength that roared through my arms and back. She flew back and hit a tree twenty feet away, stunned and whining. I stood. Bare feet on the line. Chest heaving. Blood on my palms. Dress in ruins around my waist. But I crossed it. The silver ribbon broke across my chest like a promise kept. Before any wolf caught me. Before death could touch me. Silence fell over Blackwood Territory. Thick and heavy and disbelieving. Then Darius’s voice, cold and proud and final: “She passed.” I collapsed to my knees. The power drained out of me instantly. Human again. Weak again. Bones like water. But alive. Breathing. Darius was there in one second. Arms under me before I hit dirt. He lifted me like I weighed nothing. Like I was precious instead of broken. Like I’d always been meant to be held this way. “I’ve got you,” he murmured against my hair. Cedarwood and storm and safety. He lifted me and my head lolled against his chest. His gold eyes searched my face, desperate and relieved and something softer I didn’t dare name. “Did you feel it?” I nodded. Too tired to speak. The wolf was still there, curled up inside me like she’d never left. Sleeping. But awake. Watching. Waiting. From the platform, an elder stood. Old wolf. White fur, yellow eyes clouded with age and hate. Voice like dry leaves scraping stone. “Speed means nothing. Any omega can run when chased by death. Running is instinct. Spirit is choice.” Darius didn’t look at him. He looked at me. Forehead to mine. Breath mingling. Alpha scent overwhelming and grounding all at once. Cedarwood and storm and something that was only him. “Then let them watch,” he whispered. Only for me. Only I could hear past the blood rushing in my ears. “Tomorrow is Spirit. And no wolf-less omega has spirit, they said.” He stood, holding me against his chest like a weapon. Turned to the entire pack, to the elders, to Selena still picking herself up from the dirt. “Tomorrow,” he said, voice rolling over every wolf like thunder, “she proves you all wrong.” He carried me away as the moon rose higher behind the pines. One day left. One trial left. Spirit trial. Live or die. And deep in my chest, the wolf opened one eye, gold and ancient, and growled. ---
