Chapter 10: THE GATHERING OF THE KINGS

1303 Words
The drums didn’t stop for three days. “Gathering of Kings” - once every decade. All Alpha Kings, all Alphas, all packs. Neutral ground at the Stone Circle. No blood spilled. No challenges. Just politics and teeth. Darius packed for war. “No crown,” he said, tossing black armor on the bed. “No rings. No banners. If Kieran wants to examine you, let him look at you, not my title.” I dressed in gray. Simple. No Luna gown. No jewels. Just the claiming mark on my shoulder, hidden under cloth. “You’re training me?” I asked as he handed me a dagger. Silver. Same metal as the poison blade. “For their eyes,” Darius said. He stood behind me, chest to my back. Wrapped my fingers around the hilt. “You won’t fight them. You’ll face them. There’s a difference.” “Teach me the difference.” His breath hit my ear. “Fighting is teeth and claws. Facing is standing still while they try to break you. Don’t blink. Don’t bow. Don’t give them fear.” We rode out at dawn. Fifty Blackwood wolves. Darius on black stallion. Me behind him, arms around his waist. Every mile closer to Stone Circle, his muscles got tighter. His scent turned to storm and smoke. Jealousy, my wolf called it. “Stop worrying,” I murmured against his back. “I chose you.” “You chose me here,” he said, tapped his chest over his heart. “Wait until fifty Alphas stare at you and offer you their crowns. Choice gets harder when everyone’s watching.” --- Stone Circle was older than Blackwood. Older than wolves. Ten massive stones in a ring, each carved with pack sigils. Stormcrest’s wolf. Blackwood’s thorn. Moonpeak’s crescent. Alphas were already there. Hundreds of wolves. Tents. Fires. The air stank of challenge and old blood. Kieran waited at the center. Silver armor again. Smile sharp. “Alpha King,” he bowed. Shallow. “And Luna Aria. Welcome.” Darius dismounted first. Helped me down. Hand stayed on my lower back. Possessive. Warning. Kieran’s eyes went to my shoulder. To where cloth hid the mark. “We heard you blessed twenty bonds,” he said. “Impressive for one so… new.” “New doesn’t mean weak,” I said. Darius’s hand pressed harder. _Don’t blink. Don’t bow._ “Of course not,” Kieran said. “Which is why the Council voted. Luna Aria will stand trial before the Gathering.” Darius went still. “What trial?” “Trial of Claim,” Kieran said. “Ancient law. If a Luna is newly claimed, any Alpha may challenge the bond. Prove she’s truly mated. Prove the Alpha King didn’t force her.” The courtyard went silent. Hundreds of eyes on me. Darius stepped in front of me. “She’s marked. Bonded. The Goddess witnessed.” “Witnessed in private,” Kieran countered. “The Gathering demands proof in public. One challenge. One Alpha. If he can break her bond, she’s free. If he fails, no Alpha may question Blackwood again for ten years.” “Who?” Darius snarled. Kieran smiled. “Me.” --- They built the circle. Salt. Runes. Ancient magic that cut off the bond between mates. For the trial. “You don’t have to do this,” Darius said, hands on my shoulders. Gold eyes desperate. “I’ll kill them all. Start war. Burn Stone Circle.” “Then you prove them right,” I said. “That I’m just your weapon. Not your Luna.” I stepped into the circle. Salt burned my feet. The bond to Darius snapped like a cut string. Cold hit me. Twenty years of silence. No wolf. No warmth. Just emptiness. Across the circle, Darius dropped to one knee. Hand clutching his chest. Bond severed hurt him too. Kieran stepped in. No armor now. Just strength. Alpha power rolled off him in waves. “Luna Aria,” he said. “You don’t love him. You love the crown. Come to Stormcrest. Be Queen there. Not some Alpha King’s pet.” He reached for me. Not to hurt. To touch. To see if I’d flinch. My wolf was gone. But I was still Aria. The girl who spent twenty years in mud and never broke. I didn’t flinch. I looked up at him. Straight in his storm-cloud eyes. “You asked me two years ago when I was trash. I said no. You asked me three days ago when I was Luna. I said no. You ask me now with fifty Alphas watching. Answer’s still no.” Kieran’s hand stopped an inch from my face. “You’d choose exile over Stormcrest?” “I’d choose truth over lies,” I said. “And the truth is, Darius didn’t force me. I forced him to see me.” The salt circle flared silver. The bond snapped back into place so hard I gasped. Darius roared my name. Kieran stumbled back like he’d been hit. “Bond holds,” an old Alpha announced. Voice shaking. “Trial of Claim complete. Luna Aria is truly mated.” The circle fell. Darius was on me before I could breathe. Arms crushing me. Nose in my hair. “You didn’t blink,” he whispered. Shaking. “You didn’t bow. You faced them.” “I told you,” I whispered back. “I choose you. Every time.” Kieran stood frozen. Then he dropped to one knee. First Alpha to bow to me. Not Darius. Me. “Luna Aria of Blackwood,” he said. “Stormcrest yields.” One by one, Alphas knelt. Not to Darius. To me. The rejected omega who stood in salt and didn’t break. Darius lifted me in his arms and carried me out of the circle. Didn’t care who watched. Didn’t care about politics. Behind us, the drums changed rhythm. Not war drums anymore. Victory drums. --- That night, Darius didn’t sleep. He watched me like I might vanish if he closed his eyes. “You faced Kieran without your wolf,” he said finally. “Without my power. That was just you.” “Just me was enough,” I said. He pulled me onto his lap. Forehead to mine. “Aria, do you know what you did today? You didn’t just pass their trial. You ended ten years of Alphas challenging Blackwood. No one will question my claim on you again.” “Good,” I said. “I’m tired of being questioned.” Darius laughed. First real laugh since we left Blackwood. Then his expression went serious. “Kieran won’t try again. But others will. Kings from the North. Alphas from the coast. You’re valuable now. Not as a prize. As a Queen.” “Let them come,” I said. My wolf purred through the bond, stronger than ever. “I have an Alpha King. And he bleeds for me.” Darius kissed me. Slow. Deep. Like he was memorizing me. “You’re not just my Luna anymore,” he murmured against my lips. “You’re the Luna all Alphas fear. Because you don’t need teeth to win. You just need to stand.” I smiled. “Then I’ll stand. For you. For Blackwood. For every omega they called trash.” Darius held me tighter. “Tomorrow we return home. But tonight…” His gold eyes darkened. “Tonight you’re just mine. No trials. No Alphas. Just mate.” He carried me to the tent. Barred the door. And for the first time since the claiming, Darius didn’t smell like storm or blood. He smelled like relief. Like a wolf who finally believed his mate would stay. Outside, the drums kept beating. But this time, they beat for us. ---
