Before I can explain to him what’s happened, mum looms up behind him, her eyes fixed hard on me. “And where have you been, young lady?” she says, her voice cracking out like a g*n.
“I just went for a walk around the garden,” I lie, raising my eyebrow at Ru. He shrugs. He has no idea why she’s cross either.
“Right after we’ve been burgled? I thought you had more sense than that. What if the scoundrels are hiding nearby?” Without giving me time to answer, she shifts her gaze over to Ru. “And you…I know you’ve been through a lot lately, but you’re her older brother. How could you let her run off like that?”
“He didn’t know I was going out. He was in his room. You can’t blame him for not stopping me when he had no idea I was even gone,” I snap.
