CHAPTER 13 I hurry to the clearing, noticing the familiar song echo in my mind, louder and more insistent as I get closer. For some reason, it sounds much sadder this time, almost a lament. There’s a deep longing behind it, as if someone’s trapped and can’t escape. When I get to the centre of the clearing, however, the song reverts to normal and the dense fog swirls up around me once again. I find myself staring at Cratt and Baro. “Welcome, Emily Renzi,” Baro says, as calmly as ever, but for some reason his tone induces me into a sudden anger. “How could you just let them break into our house?” I almost scream. “If the dogs hadn’t been there to chase them out, who knows what would have happened?
