CYRIL AND METHODIUS BROTHERHOOD AND THE MAIN RUS RADA IN 1845—1851 The name of "Cyril and Methodius Society" was given to the first Ukrainian secret political union that was established in Kyiv late in 1845. The idea of the union was to revive Ukrainian cultural and nation as well as activate all-Slavic liberation movement. The Society members called themselves as "bratchiks (brothers)." The Society key people were teachers and graduates of Kyiv and Kharkiv Universities. Among them there were such prominent Ukrainian figures as T. Shevchenko, M. Kostomarov, P. Kulish, M. Gulak, V. Bilozerskyi and H. Andruzkyi.
