Chapter Twelve

1215 Words
The wolf stood tall in all her glory, white as the moon, streaks of silver light rippling through her fur like she had swallowed the night sky whole. Her eyes were sea-blue. Bright. Commanding. The kind of blue that didn’t beg to be seen. It demanded it. A howl tore from her throat, long and powerful, echoing across valleys and forests, calling every wolf to attention. Claiming her place. Claiming her power. Luna Head. She moved across the open field with effortless grace, head lifted high, claws sinking into the damp soil as if the earth itself welcomed her weight. She paused. Lifted her gaze to the sky. The moon answered. She shook out her fur, silver light scattering from her body like dusted stars. A low purr rumbled from her chest before she leapt forward, disappearing into the dark, her white coat glowing like a beacon against the night. “Luna?” Zeke jolted upright in bed, breath uneven. “Luna?” He whispered again. What was that? Why did his wolf recognized that Luna as Ivy? It couldn't be. With a dormant wolf? Things like that were unheard of. He straightened his robe and took quick steps into the bathroom when he paused in his movement, his eyes falling on the letter sitting on the table. His fingers grazed past the letter bearing the seal of the council of elders, sent by Damien. He shook his head before walking into the bathroom. “What must have caused that?” Or could it be somehow related to her new closeness to the pups. When he stepped out of the bathroom with water dripping from his hair, he met Lucas seated on his couch, legs dangling over the table. “Why are you here?” His voice was rough and husky. “Reports.” Lucas replied. “You look tired today,” He noticed and Zeke groaned. “A whole lot of things,” he said. “Crashing down on you because of your stubbornness,” Lucas clicked his tongue. “How about you step back a little and do what you crave.” He added “I crave nothing,” Zeke rebuked and tore open his wardrobe, throwing clothes over his body. “You crave nothing? Cute,” Lucas rolled his eyes. “Lucas!” “Okay, okay. Reports, it is. The amount of pups that had been healed has increased drastically by the day. I must say Ivy is doing a good job there,” He said and raised his gaze to glance at Zeke who looked like he was thinking about something else. “Zeke?” “I understand what you're saying. Continue,” He instructed. “That being said, I met her when I was coming. She should be on her way now,” Zeke's eyes darkened and he whipped his head to Lucas. “Why should she be here?” He growled. Lucas blinked. “Maybe when she comes, you should ask her that,” “I'm your alpha. You don't get to talk to me like that,” Zeke's voice bounced over the office and Lucas raised an eyebrow. “What's wrong with you man?” He asked genuinely. “You look stressed and agitated,” He pointed out. “I'm sorry,” Zeke sighed. “It's nothing,” The door swung open and he froze. Ivy stepped in. “Hey Stoneheart,” She called as she threw herself on the couch, intertwining her fingers. “What are you doing here?” He asked with a frown. “Isn't this your office or am I in the wrong room,” She looked up at him with innocent puppy eyes. “The question was what are you doing here?” Zeke said. “I came to visit you and you know stay with you, I miss you,” She smirked. Zeke scoffed and stepped back, he could feel heat climbing into his face. “You don't have any assignments to carry out today? Why are you free?” He boomed. “Now, here's that. Why am I being assigned to work as if I'm a slave or a paid worker?” She tilted her head to ask and Lucas gave her a thumbs up. “What do you mean by that?” She stood up from the sofa. “I mean why are you making me work like a maid in the pack?” She leaned into him. “You want to be my mate right?” He shot back. “Your Mate works like a maid?” She scoffed, disbelief lining her voice. “Is this your way of telling me to give you because it's not working,” She said. “You're thinking too highly of yourself,” He muttered. “Well, I'm Ivy Hale. Your Mate, I should think highly of myself at least to match your ego,” She chuckled lightly. “What do you mean by that Ivy?” “Whatever you think I mean,” Her eyes glimmered with a mischievous light. “You're making a grave mistake,” “And I would love to see where the so-called grave mistake leads to,” She scoffed. “That line is getting old already, try using something new,” She added. She fell back onto the couch with a sigh. “The pups are doing well, so I have all time to be with you today,” She grinned, turning to Zeke. Her smiling image crashed with the white Luna in Zeke's mind's eye and it threw him off his feet. It can't be. Can't be her. “You've been reassigned,” The words slipped from his mouth before he could stop it. The room stood still. “Reassigned?” Lucas asked, speaking for the first time since Ivy walked into the room. “What?” Ivy asked, looking at him like he had gone mad. “Yes, reassigned,” He muttered. This had to be the only way. “You don't mean it. Reassigned?” She couldn't bring herself to get past the shock. “The pups and everyone still needs me,” She half yelled. “No, they don't. The doctors would be able to take care of them now,” Zeke said stiffly. “I don't get you Zeke. What do you mean reassigned, what the hell is wrong with you? You think you just get to use me and discard me right?” For a moment, Ivy's mask slipped and she allowed the frustration seep through. “You don't get to raise your voice at me,” Zeke eyed her and she sighed resignedly, mumbling a quiet apology and running her fingers through her hair. “You've been reassigned to the kitchen,” He added with a note of finality. “So this is how we are going to do this now right?” She scoffed. “Zeke,” Lucas warned softly. “To the kitchen,” Zeke gestured towards the door. “Make sure to prepare a f*****g fire fighter,” She yelled, flipped him the middle finger and stormed out. “f**k Zeke,” Lucas sighed in disbelief. Zeke didn't answer. Because all he could see was a white wolf standing under the moon. And it has Ivy's eyes.
