Chapter Twenty

894 Words
Lucas pushed the door to Zeke's chambers open. The night breeze floated inside for a split second before he slammed it shut. His hands found the light switch at the wall and turned it on. The light flooded the sitting room but Zeke was nowhere to be found. “Where's this dude?” He muttered and dropped the files on the table. It's been a week since Darius arrived and it was becoming difficult for them to meet alone, so they had agreed to work on something tonight but where's Zeke. The sounds coming from the bedroom became clearer as Lucas walked around the sitting room. Strained groans. Lucas hurried over there. Pushing the door open and turning on the light switch, he found Zeke in bed, cuddling himself with a big blanket thrown over him, clearly shivering from under the blanket. “Zeke,” he whispered, already hurrying towards him. When Zeke heard his name, he opened his eyes slowly with a groan, proving just how difficult the task was for him. “f**k,” Lucas cursed when he placed his hands on Zeke's forehead. “Man, you're burning up,” He said and stood up from the bed, walking towards the bedside table. “I've taken those drugs,” Zeke said and that was when Lucas eyes caught the opened bottles of pills sitting on the table. “And it's still this severe?” Lucas shot an eyebrow up. “It's probably exhaustation, I've been working none stop for some time now. It would pass,” Zeke said and went into a coughing fit which was immediately quenched when Lucas provided a glass of water. “This doesn't come from you being f*****g tired man,” Lucas said, pushing his fingers through his hair. “I'm fine,” Zeke said and sat up slowly. “Yes, you are,” Lucas rolled his eyes. “Don't tell anyone,” Zeke said. “I won't,” was the reply he got as Lucas walked out of the room. Walking over to the telephone at Zeke's office, he punched in some numbers and in split seconds, the door bell rang. He went over to answer it, the pack doctor. “He's in his room,” He said and walked towards the room, showing the doctor. When Zeke heard footsteps, he raised his head and his eyes widened instantly on seeing the doctor. “Lucas,” he called in a warning tone. “Let him check you man,” Lucas waved his hands at the doctor who went into action immediately. The clock ticked and by each second, Lucas was getting impatient. The doctor was finally done with his check ups and he turned to Lucas with a rather grave expression on his face. “Bad,” Lucas clicked his tongue. “What's it?” Zeke asked from the bed. “Wolf fever,” The doctor said and grimaced immediately the words left his mouth like he was physically hurt. “Wolf what? What the f**k?” Lucas shrieked. “Shut the f**k up,” Zeke snapped at him and Lucas looked away, his hands covering his mouth. “Wolf f*****g fever,” he muttered to himself. They all knew the cause. It was caused by the sustained denial of a true mate bond. A true mate bond. Ivy and Zeke had a true mate bond. That was something that was incomprehensible. A true mate bond rarely happens and when it does, is never broken. If broken, one of the mates loses their lives, mostly the one that broke it and there is no second chance mate in this bond. “How long do I have?” Zeke broke the silence. “Have till death?” Lucas chuckled. “That's a pretty straightforward question,” He said. Zeke threw him a nasty glance at turned to the doctor. “It's still at it's early stage. It won't kill you yet but would start eroding you steadily, in terms of control, strength and clarity. You've got two to three weeks before the pack notices it.” The doctor reported. Zeke let out a deep breath and looks away from a moment before bringing his attention back to the doctor. “I don't want to hear this anywhere except from here,” he said and the doctor nodded. “Swear to silence,” he instructed and the doctor did. “You too,” he said to Lucas. Lucas rolled his eyes but did what he asked - albeit grudgingly. “At least,I'm not the one going to die,” he muttered and the doctor left. “You know exactly what would cure this,” Lucas began. “Don't.” Zeke held up a hand at him. “It's not worth dying because of duties and without an heir, Darius would just take over the pack,” He said. “He's nice and kind to them,” Zeke said. “He's not you. He's not the rightful alpha. Don't tell me you're considering that. Ivy isn't a bad choice if you ask me,” He said and shook his head before walking out of the room. Zeke's eyes fall on the letter, still sitting on his desk. “She isn't,” He muttered and sighed. “If only she would accept the rejection. Now it's impossible,” he said.
