Chapter 1: Fate's Unwanted Push
The café is packed as usual, and I can feel my feet screaming in protest with every step. Balancing the tray in one hand and Lily’s tiny backpack on my shoulder, I weave through the crowd, dodging elbows and hands reaching for pastries. My eyes are fixed ahead, focused only on making it to the counter, but fate, as it often does, has other plans.
I’m a split second too late. A man—tall, imposing, and dressed in a suit that looks like it costs more than my entire monthly salary—blocks my path.
My breath catches in my throat. “Excuse me,” I mutter, trying to step to the side, but the next thing I know, the tray tilts.
It’s like time slows. The dark roast coffee splashes across his pristine white shirt. It’s a disaster. A nightmare.
“s**t,” I curse, dropping the tray and instinctively reaching for the napkins that are way too far out of reach.
I watch in horror as the dark liquid seeps into his suit. He stands frozen, his face unreadable, then slowly looks up at me with the kind of icy detachment only a billionaire can afford. His jaw tightens, his gaze colder than the winter air outside.
“I am so, so sorry,” I stammer, feeling my cheeks burn with embarrassment. "I didn't see—"
He interrupts me with a slight shake of his head, lips curling into a tight line. “Clearly.”
His voice is smooth but edged with annoyance, and it sends a shiver down my spine. He’s not angry in the way most people would be. This isn’t about spilled coffee. This is about control. And in that moment, I realize he has it. Everything about him screams power, precision, and dominance.
I can’t breathe. He’s staring at me, and all I can think about is how out of place I must seem, standing here, apologizing in front of someone who probably has a staff to handle such trivialities.
But before I can say anything else, Lily tugs at my sleeve. “Mommy, I’m scared.”
I blink, turning to her, seeing her small, anxious face and the way her little fingers cling to my arm. She doesn’t like loud places, and I’ve dragged her into a scene where the attention is now all on us.
“Sweetheart, it’s okay,” I whisper, bending down to her level, my hand smoothing her hair back. I glance at the man, silently begging him to just let it go.
Then, suddenly, a commotion erupts behind me—a loud crash, followed by a voice I know all too well.
“Jasmine!”
I freeze. Colin’s voice cuts through the noise like a knife, and I turn, my stomach tightening. My ex-husband stands in the doorway, his usual smug smile plastered across his face. The last person I want to see.
“Colin, what are you doing here?” I ask, trying to sound calm, but my heart is racing.
“I came for Lily,” he says, his voice carrying an edge of entitlement.
I grit my teeth, trying to mask the shock. “Lily is not going anywhere with you.”
But Colin’s eyes narrow as he steps closer, brushing past the man I accidentally spilled coffee on without a second glance. His attention is solely focused on me. “That’s where you’re wrong. I’m taking her.”
I stand up straight, the weight of his words crashing down on me like a ton of bricks. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m suing for full custody,” he states, his eyes cold, unyielding. “I’ve had enough of your... instability. You can’t keep raising her like this. She deserves more.”
My world tilts. I can’t even process what he’s saying. Custody? Full custody? No. Not after everything.
“Are you serious right now?” I snap, my voice shaking with disbelief. “You left us. You abandoned her and me. And now you want to take her away?”
The cold man—Gabriel, I think his name is—shifts slightly behind me, as if he’s contemplating something. He steps forward with a slow, deliberate pace, his icy gaze landing on Colin.
“This is not the time or place for this,” Gabriel says, his voice low and dangerous. “You don’t walk in here and demand something like that.”
Colin sneers. “Who the hell are you?”
Gabriel doesn’t even flinch. “Someone who has enough respect for this woman not to let you walk all over her.”
For a second, I think Colin might actually lash out. His fists are clenched, his face red with fury. But then he stops, eyes narrowing, calculating. The tension in the air is thick, and I can feel it suffocating me.
“You have no idea what you’re getting into,” Colin warns his voice a low growl. “This is my daughter, and I’ll do whatever it takes to get her.”
I swallow, the panic in my chest rising. “You’re not taking her. I won’t let you.”
Gabriel’s eyes flicker toward me, his gaze softer, almost unreadable. There’s something in his stare—something that hints at understanding.
But then Colin speaks again, his tone a sickly sweet promise. “Oh, you’ll let me. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure of it.”
I take a step back, my mind spinning. The weight of his words is almost too much to bear. I’m being backed into a corner. The ground beneath me feels like it’s slipping away, and I’m helpless to stop it.
Lily pulls at my hand again, her voice barely a whisper. “Mommy... I want to go home.”
Her words hit me like a slap to the face. What kind of life am I giving her? A mother who can’t protect her? Who can’t even protect herself?
Before I can respond, Gabriel moves. In one swift motion, he steps between Colin and me, his gaze piercing through him.
“Enough,” Gabriel says, his voice low but carrying the weight of a command. “You don’t get to come here, make demands, and bully her. Not today.”
Colin looks taken aback as if he’s not used to being spoken to like that. His eyes flick to me, searching for any sign that I might back him up. But I don’t. I can’t.
I glance at Gabriel, unsure of what to feel. Grateful? Relieved? He’s a stranger, someone I’ve just met under the most awkward of circumstances, and yet here he is, standing between me and my ex-husband like he’s some kind of protector.
The air crackles with tension, and I can feel my heart hammering in my chest.
But Colin isn’t done. He throws a last, venomous glare in Gabriel’s direction.
“This isn’t over,” he says, his words dripping with malice.
And then, with a final, defiant look at me, he turns and stalks out of the café, leaving a trail of chaos in his wake.
I stand there, motionless, trying to make sense of what just happened. My world is spinning, and the only thing I’m sure of is that nothing will ever be the same again.
Gabriel doesn’t move right away. He stands, watching Colin disappear, and then finally turns to face me. The silence between us stretches for what feels like an eternity.
“You’re... you’re okay?” he asks, his voice softer than I expected.
I nod, even though everything inside me is unraveling. “I... I don’t know anymore.”
The moment hangs in the air, heavy with uncertainty and unspoken tension.
Then, Gabriel’s lips curve into something resembling a smile, but it’s almost as cold as the rest of him.
“I’m not a knight in shining armor, you know,” he says, his eyes narrowing slightly. “But if you need someone to back you up, you don’t have to do it alone.”
Before I can respond, a voice calls out from the door, snapping my attention back to the present.
But what I hear next sends a chill down my spine.
“Jasmine,” my mother’s voice rings through the café, clear and demanding, “you’ve done enough. It’s time for you to come home.”
My blood runs cold.
