Chapter 10 - Public Masks / Secret Desires
The chandeliers shimmered over the polished marble floor, reflecting dozens of glinting wine glasses and the flash of sequined gowns. Vanilla knew none of this mattered tonight, yet from halfway across the country, Teagan's face kept appearing in her mind. She shook it off, sipping her sparkling water. Not her world tonight. Tonight, Rayyan's laugh was warm and effortless in her ears, filling the quiet space around them.
Teagan, meanwhile, sat rigid in the grand ballroom, heels planted, spine straight. Her pantsuit was sharp, blood red, tailored to perfection, commanding. But her mind? Not present.
"Teagan? Are you even here?"
The snap of Lilla's perfectly manicured fingers in front of her eyes made Teagan flinch. Lilla's golden dress gleamed under the chandelier lights. Strapless, plunging neckline, flirtatious smile. She leaned closer, brushing Teagan's shoulder lightly. "You okay? You seem... elsewhere."
Teagan forced a smile, nodding. "Just... tired, long day."
Lilla didn't buy it, but she let it slide. The five-course meal passed in a blur of flavors, applause for performers, speeches about new electors, and polite clinking of cutlery. Teagan ate mechanically, nodding at her mother's acquaintances, smiling at Lilla's flirtations. Her thoughts were not here; they were on Vanilla.
Where are you? Are you safe? Did she go home with Rayyan? Is she even thinking about me right now?
When the host announced Teagan's new title, a cheer erupted around the room. Teagan accepted it, standing taller for a moment, but the glittering applause bounced off her like a distant wave. She practically ran out of the hall once the ceremony ended, pulling out her phone, thumbs flying over the screen in desperate texts to Vanilla.
Meanwhile, Vanilla leaned against Rayyan's shoulder, the glow of the TV flickering across their faces. Problem Child played on the screen, popcorn spilling between them. Vanilla's phone sat ignored on the table. She didn't want to think about Teagan. Not tonight. Rayyan's fingers brushed against her thigh as she grabbed a handful of popcorn, and Vanilla's chest fluttered.
"You're too quiet," Rayyan teased, nudging Vanilla with her knee.
"Just... enjoying the movie," Vanilla murmured.
Rayyan smirked, leaning closer, letting her hair brush Vanilla's arm. "Mhmm... sure."
Vanilla is holding her down for a kiss.
The playful tension grew as they laughed at the antics on-screen, cuddled closer, and shared popcorn. Rayyan's warmth radiated against Vanilla, stirring something deep inside her she hadn't expected. She found herself holding back, thinking about Teagan, but enjoying this too.
Finally, Rayyan stood and headed upstairs to shower. Vanilla, finally noticing her phone, saw it: over a hundred missed calls, dozens of frantic texts from Teagan. Her stomach tightened. She tapped the green call button.
"Vanilla? Where the heck are you? Are you okay? I need to see you, I"
Vanilla held up a hand, keeping her voice calm. "I'm... with Rayyan. We're watching movies. Relax."
Teagan's panic was audible. "Can I come over? Please, I need"
Vanilla hesitated, then nodded. "Wait a minute."
She walked into the bathroom, carefully closing the door behind her. Steam filled the room. Rayyan emerged in the showers water, damp hair clinging to her shoulders as she was washing. Vanilla swallowed hard at the sight of her, feeling the heat crawl up her chest.
"Uh... Teagan wants to talk to me," Vanilla said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rayyan raised an eyebrow, lips quirking into a small grin. "Sure. Give her the address."
Vanilla nodded and handed her phone over, reading the address aloud while Teagan stayed on speaker.
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Vanilla opened it to find Teagan standing there, soaked from the rain, hair plastered to her forehead, trembling from the chill and her raw emotions. Her usually confident posture was gone, replaced by vulnerability that made Vanilla's heart tighten.
"Come in," Vanilla said softly, stepping aside. Teagan's eyes met hers, wide, pleading.
They moved to the living room first. Teagan sank onto the couch, shivering slightly. Vanilla draped a blanket over her shoulders, brushing her damp hair back. Her fingers lingered against Teagan's temple, tracing a gentle line down her cheek. Teagan shivered again, this time from the touch, not the cold.
"I... I got the title," Teagan whispered, voice small. "More responsibilities. It's... It's exciting, but I"
"You're amazing," Vanilla murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Teagan's head. "You handle it all... and still care about me. That's more than enough."
Teagan's eyes welled again. "I'm sorry, Vanilla... you deserve better. Maybe you should"
"Stop." Vanilla's voice was soft but firm. She pulled Teagan closer, wrapping her arms around her from behind, letting Teagan lean into her. "You're enough. I don't want better. I want you. All of you."
Teagan's hands clenched the blanket, fingers brushing Vanilla's arms. The warmth, the closeness, it made her heartbeat spike. "I... I just... I'm scared," she admitted. "What if I hurt you? What if... everything falls apart?"
Vanilla rested her cheek on the back of Teagan's shoulder. "Then we'll figure it out. Together."
A few minutes later, Rayyan returned downstairs, wrapped in a towel. She paused, watching the quiet intimacy. "Well... why don't we just make it a sleepover?" she suggested, voice low, teasing.
Vanilla glanced at Teagan, then Rayyan. Her stomach twisted. She wanted them both real bad, wanted Teagan's intensity, Rayyan's playful warmth. Could she... have both? Were they open to it? Her mind raced. Who do I want tonight? Who do I choose in the morning?
Teagan's head tilted, sensing the shift in Vanilla's gaze. "What... what does that mean?" she asked quietly, voice tinged with fear and hope.
Vanilla's hand found Teagan's, squeezing it gently. Then she turned to Rayyan, letting her fingers brush against hers as well. "It means... We'll figure it out," she said, voice low and steady, her heart thundering with desire and anticipation.
The night stretched ahead, full of unspoken promises, heated glances, and whispered confessions. Vanilla, caught between two desires, felt the delicious tension of what might come. And as the three of them moved upstairs together, the line between affection, passion, and jealousy blurred beautifully.
End of Chapter 10:
Vanilla lay between Teagan and Rayyan, fingers entwined with both, heart racing. Who do I want tonight? Who do I choose in the morning? Could I... have them both?
The answer was uncertain. The thrill was undeniable. And for the first time, Vanilla didn't want certainty-she wanted the chaos, the heat, the raw possibility of love in all its forms.
