Constable van Wyk convinces the secretary of the police psychiatrist to allow Petro to see him first. He goes in with her and explains to the psychiatrist what happened and when he excuses himself, the psychiatrist talks with Petro for almost two hours. He calls constable van Wyk back in and orders him to take her to the psychiatric wing of the state hospital. He phones ahead and instructs the staff at the psychiatric wing to keep Petro under twenty-four hour surveillance as she is suicidal. He then phones her mother to inform her where Petro is and he is surprised by her lack of interest in the wellbeing of her daughter, but he attributes this to the trauma and shock of losing her husband.
