chapter 1
Andrew brought Jessica home. I was about to show him the hospital report. I was pregnant in my fifth year of marriage. We never talked about having kids. I wondered how he'd feel when he found out he was going to be a dad. But when Jessica came in, I clenched the report in my hand. 'Jessica is staying with us for a while.' Andrew came in holding her hand and gave her slippers. 'Why?' I asked. ‘She's pregnant and needs care.’ Andrew gave Jessica a cup of warm water to drink. 'Is that too much for Victoria?' Jessica looked at Andrew. 'You're good friends. She has to cook anyway, so she just needs to make it more nutritious.' 'Use less spice and more vinegar, and don't put cilantro in her food.' My husband looked at me when I came in. He told me to take better care of Jessica. Andrew still puts Jessica's preferences first. I've beenwith him for 5 years, but he doesn't remember that I like chili and cilantro the most. He doesn't care. He only sees me as a passing thing. How much should one care about a life partner? I looked at the two people in front of me, who treated me like a babysitter, and tried not to cry, still holding the report. Jessicaand I were just classmates. When I first went to college, I joined a group of freshmen. Jessica friended me. 'I heard there is a handsome boy in your class, and his family is rich.' After chatting, she asked about him. I knew who she meant. Everyone in our school knew about this man. Andrew is handsome, comes from a good family and got into University with the top grades. Girls cheered for him when he played basketball. Some girls from other schools came to see him too. 'I like him. Can you give him a letter?' I said no. I used to be an inconspicuous person in the class. I didn't even dare look at him more than once. I didn’t know Jessica very well, but she often came to see me. In fact she came to see Andrew. She also took me to the stadium to watch Andrew play basketball. Andrew noticed Jessica. She's pretty, so she should be his type. She started asking Andrew to eat together at the canteen. She also asked me to take their seats. When Andrew was playing basketball, he let Jessica keep his towel and only drank the water she gave him. But Jessica often asked me to buy water with the excuse that the weather was too hot and the supermarket was too far away. They got together quickly and were a conspicuous pair on campus. I was in the bathroom when I heard girls talking. 'Why does Victoria always follow Andrew? Does she like him too?' 'No way! She is so ridiculous!' 'Don't talk about Victoria like that.' ‘Andrew is outstanding. It's normal for her to like him.’ It was Jessica. 'Jessica, you're too kind. You're still helping her out.' 'We can't get rid of her. She's too clingy .' ‘Andrew hated her very much, and he also asked me why she was so annoying.’ 'Oh my god, that's so shameless.' I listened to the voices fade away and covered my mouth to stop myself from crying out. Jessica still called on me every time she came to see Andrew. 'Victoria, you're not coming to dinner?' Jessica held Andrew's hand and looked at me. Andrew looked at me. I replied, 'You can go by yourselves. I…I’m losing weight, so I won't go to the canteen.’ I clenched my fists and pinched my flesh. The ugly duckling should have its own life. I began to find ways to avoid the two of them. College life went by fast. I didn't expect that Andrew would still come looking for me. On the day of graduation, I was packing up my things. 'Victoria, I saw that Andrew seemed to be looking for you.' My roommate led me to the balcony and told me to look down. Andrew, looking anxious. He was looking for JessicaJessica. 'You heard wrong. He's looking for Jessica.' I shook my head and looked away. 'Knock, knock,' someone knocked on the door. 'Victoria, go downstairs quickly. Andrew is looking for you.' A classmate from another dorm ran to me, panting. 'He's downstairs asking for you.' She said. I didn't want to get involved again. But what if it's urgent? I went downstairs anyway. 'Victoria! Have you seen Jessica?' Andrew lunged at me when he saw me. Andrew pulled me back just as I was turning to go upstairs. 'Can you help me contact Jessica?' He was begging me. ‘I haven't seen her for two weeks. She doesn't answer her phone and didn't come to the graduation ceremony.’ 'She's breaking up with me, but we were fine yesterday.' He showed me the last message Jessica sent him: 'Andrew, let's break up. Forget about me. I wish you happiness.' Andrew looked desperate. He grabbed me as if I was his last hope. I called Jessica, but she wasn't there. I didn't receive any reply. 'I can't reach her either, so I'll leave.' I turned and went up the stairs without waiting for Andrew to respond. I didn't want to see him sad. I shouldn't have got involved. Jessica seems to have disappeared. Andrew also went to the southern city and stayed near Jessica's hometown for more than a month. But the place has long been empty, and he never waited for her.
