First day
Today is my first day at my school. Falcon academy is a school made for elites here. It's the kind of school I would never have stepped foot into all my life if my father was still alive. Don't get me wrong. Although my father was not rich and we lived a simple life, I was happy then. I didn't live in a mansion or wear designer clothes but I was loved. That's the difference between living with my father and mother. Being forced to ‘fit’ in a world that is obviously out of our reach. I don't know why she enrolled me here but it's definitely not because she cares so much about me and wants the best for me. Growing up, she never treated me like a daughter. I'd say, my presence annoyed her. “ If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be stuck with a poor man, living like a pauper.” Those are words she would tell me every time I tried to get close to her. According to her, I was some mistake that should never have happened. The person who ruined her life. My father would whisper that she didn't mean it as a way to console me but I knew better. At twelve years, I stopped yearning for a love that was impossible to get. At the same time, my father fell ill and I was forced to take care of him. Apparently, his loving wife took it as her chance to find a ‘ better life’ for herself. I drag my legs towards the school gate where my mother agreed to pick me up. I am lost in thought until I hear it. A flash of chrome followed by a blast of wind. The sound of brakes screaming fills my ears before a motorcycle skids so close the front tire kisses my shoe. I freeze, heart slamming against my ribs and a scream tears through my lips. The rider rips off his helmet and glares down at me with dark eyes that resemble a brewing storm. “Are you brain-dead?” His voice is a low snarl, sharp enough to cut through my shock. My mouth falls open. I try to form words to throw back but nothing comes to mind. My eyes remain on those perfectly sculpted jawlines and… “Are you mute too?” He fires again through gritted teeth, a sneer painting his lips. Realizing that I have been caught staring, I cough awkwardly and look away. “ Excuse me?” I finally whisper, the voice so low it's almost inaudible. “You heard me.” He swings a leg off the bike and looms over me, the scent of gasoline and leather crowding the air. “What kind of i***t walks in the middle of the road? You think you own it and everyone should pave the way for your highness to pass?” The mockery in his words is unconcealed. Heat shoots up my neck. “I was walking…” “ I don't care what you were doing.” He snaps in irritation, cutting me off. “ I hate it when anyone gets in my way. If you think your little petty tricks will get my attention then you are mistaken. You are not my type.” The man sneers in disgust. I feel my anger slowly rising. So this is what he thinks? That I was trying to get to him by putting myself into harm's way? My fingers clench, digging into my palm “You nearly hit me.” I remind him in case he got it wrong. “ And whose fault was it? What? Do you want me to compensate you? Is that what this is all about?” The more he talks, the more pissed I get. I can't help but pity him. Just what kind of people has he been dealing with to have such presumptuous assumptions? He leans closer, eyes glinting. “Nearly doesn’t count. You are still standing. You should be thanking me for having reflexes.” Before I can fire back, he shoves the helmet on and kicks the bike to life. He roars off, leaving nothing but the stench of exhaust and the echo of his arrogance thrumming in my chest. My nails bite into my palm as the echo of his engine fades. Jerk. Bastard. He didn't even bother to apologise after almost hitting me but goes ahead to accuse me of pulling a stunt to gain his attention? What a bastard. If there were an award for most Infuriating human I'd ever come across, I would undoubtedly pick him. I suck in a breath, willing my heartbeat to slow. “ Don’t make trouble for me at your new school, Mia.” Mom’s warning slides through my mind and I force myself to calm down. I grind my teeth and continue walking to the gate, kicking a pebble hard enough to hear it skitter across the pavement. The evening breeze kisses my skin and I close my eyes, savouring it. By the time I reach the school gate, I spot my mother’s car already waiting. I can smell her frustration from across and my stomach drops. She hates waiting for anyone and that means I am already on her bad side. I cross the road, forcing a bright smile I don’t feel. Maybe if I look cheerful enough, she won’t scold me for wasting her precious time. But the moment I pull the passenger door open, I am greeted by a glare that tells me her annoyance with me is at its peak. “What took you so long? Do you think I am your chauffeur that daddy dearest paid to cruise you around?” My father's name coming from her mouth reminds me how she left him to die while she chased around rich men to fund her lifestyle. Even on his deathbed, she didn't come to see him leaving me with the responsibility to care for him. Tears prick my eyes but I force them down. “ Don't give me that look. Your father is already dead and your tears won't bring him back.” My mother snaps, annoyed. “ You are just as pathetic as he was, a loser.” She sneers. I want to shout that at least he was a better parent than she ever was but I know better than to try her patience. When she starts the car, I realize that she is taking the opposite route to our home. “ We are moving to our new home. You'd better behave and not embarrass me infront of your stepfather.” My mother orders. The words hit me like a punch to the stomach and before I can stop myself, I find myself repeating the word stepfather with a frown. “ What? Are you Judging me for marrying again? Tell me, if I don't get married, how the f**k would you have enrolled to an Elite school like Falcon? Do you think your father left you any inheritance to put you through school?” She sneers. “ I am finally living the life I have always dreamt of. You better not ruin this for me or I will make you regret your own existence. *** When my mother's car pulls off outside what seems like a million dollar mansion, I realize why she kept warning me about ruining things for her. For someone obsessed with belonging to the high class, it looks like she finally managed to climb the social ladder. “ Don't just stand there like a fool. Help me with these suitcases.” My mother snaps at me. Her shrill voice pulls me from my little trance. Together, we pull the three enormous suitcases she managed to pack God knows when. At the door, a servant helps with our luggage. If my mother's news of remarrying shocked me, nothing prepared me for the shock of my life when my eyes collided with the dark brooding eyes from earlier. “ What the hell are you doing in my home?”
