Chapter 6

Jianci

Like me, Uncle Lux couldn't speak immediately when he saw me. He seemed not to expect to see me right inside his office. But why is he the CEO of J&L Technology? Isn't he the CEO of White Group? Did he build his own company?

"Jianci." Uncle Lux softly spoke my name. He seemed to have recovered from his shock. He quickly stood up and approached me, then hugged me tightly. So tight that I could hardly breathe.

"I can't breathe, Uncle Lux." I couldn't bear it, so I complained to him. I didn't expect him to react this way upon seeing me. It was as if he missed me so much and didn't want to let me go again.

"You really have guts, Jianci. After three years of hiding, you've finally decided to show yourself to us," he scolded me angrily after he released me from his tight hug. The longing that I saw on his face suddenly disappeared. So I thought I might have just imagined what I saw. Because that was what I wanted to see on his face when we met again.

"I came here to be the CEO's assistant. I didn't know that you were the CEO of J&L Technology," I confessed to him. If I had known that he would be my boss, I wouldn't have applied to be his assistant.

"So, you didn't come here because you wanted to see me but because you applied as my assistant?" Uncle Lux's face suddenly darkened. He took a deep breath before returning to his seat. "Okay. Since you are here to be my assistant, then be ready because you will go with me to a lunch meeting."

"Right away? Won't anyone brief me on what I need to do? Where's your assistant before me?" I asked him with a frown.

Uncle Lux threw a folder at me. "That's my schedule and what you need to do. You have to memorize all of them." Uncle Lux's face was serious as he spoke. When he's like that, he's scary. I can see the Lux White that many fear. "Your table will be that empty seat near the door of my office."

"Yes, Uncle Lux," I answered him in a weak voice. I have imagined many ways of meeting him but I never imagined that we would meet like this.

"Call me Mr. White. We're at work and not outside," he corrected me with a serious face.

"Okay, Mr. White. I understand," I quickly replied. Even though he's scary, I still want to hug him. I missed him terribly. But I promised myself that I wouldn't force myself on him anymore. And before I returned to the country, I had accepted that he would never be able to love me.

Without a word, I left Uncle Lux's office and looked for the empty seat he was referring to. I immediately found it and familiarized myself with it.

I sat down at the table and started reading the contents of the folder. I hadn't even warmed my seat when two women suddenly approached me, both frowning.

"What black magic did you use to make Mr. White accept you as his assistant?" one of the two women who approached me asked. Her voice was a bit loud so the other employees there looked at us.

"You don't even need to ask that, Bella. She must have used her beauty to become Mr. White's assistant," said the other woman to the first one who asked me, whose name turned out to be Bella.

"Thank you for your compliment," I replied with a smile but in a teasing tone. I'm just new here but I already have enemies. I didn't do anything to them to make them angry at me. Is it really that big of a deal for them to be Uncle Lux's assistant?

"You're right, Lyka. Maybe she slept with one of the higher-ups, that's why she became Mr. White's assistant," Bella said with an insulting smile.

"What's your problem with me? If you're angry because I became Mr. White's assistant, go to him and voice out your complaint to him. Do you think I want to be his assistant? If he agrees, I'll resign right away," I said, annoyed. If they knew my relationship with our boss, they would surely be even more annoyed with me.

I thought they were intimidated by me so they didn't answer and suddenly returned to their seats. But after the two left, that's when I saw Uncle Lux standing at the door and I just didn't notice him. I don't know if he heard what I said to the two women or not because his face was unreadable.

"Listen, everyone. I'm not paying you to just gossip. The next time I catch you talking nonsense during work hours, your salary will be deducted. And if it happens for the third time, I will immediately fire you. Is that clear?" Uncle Lux said loudly to all of us.

"Yes, Sir," we all answered him at the same time. Bella and Lyra secretly gave me a bad look before focusing their eyes on their computers.

"You." Uncle Lux pointed at me. "Come inside my office." After he spoke, he quickly returned to his office.

"Get used to our boss. He's a bit grumpy and scary. But sometimes he's kind and generous. You just have to go along with his trip. By the way, I'm Andrea," the woman who introduced herself as Andrea said to me with a smile. She seemed kind and friendly, so I smiled at her.

"I'm Jianci Miller. It's nice to meet you, Andrea," I replied with a smile.

"Don't mind those two women either. They're just jealous of you because it's their dream to be Mr. White's assistant but they always fail to impress Perry. He's Mr. White's assistant in his company, the Lux Group. Perry is the one who chooses who deserves to be the assistant of our boss when he's here in this company," Andrea explained at length.

So that's why I was accepted as Uncle Lux's assistant, because Perry chose me. He saw my name among the people who applied to be his boss's assistant, so he immediately chose me. And that's why he immediately had me sign a three-year contract even before Uncle Lux saw me. So that I wouldn't back out when I found out who my boss would be.

My conversation with Andrea was cut short when the door of Uncle Lux's office opened again and his head peeked out and gave me a bad look. I cringed and hurriedly entered his office. It was my first day in the company but I was already scolded by my boss. I don't know why out of all the companies I could have applied to, I applied to the company of the person I'm not yet ready to see.
