Chapter 7

Jianci As we walked out of the company, I was still holding the folder that Uncle Lux had given me and he had wanted me to memorize it. I didn't want him to think I was slow-witted if I couldn't memorize it quickly. I was startled when my forehead suddenly bumped into something hard. When I looked up, Uncle Lux's face greeted me. I was engrossed in memorizing his schedule so I didn't know that he stopped walking. I swallowed hard because our lips were only about an inch apart. But before my imagination could run wild, he quickly pushed me away from him as if he had suddenly been burned. "Watch where you're going. There's a time for reading," he scolded me. Ever since we met again earlier, he had been growling whenever he talked to me. It was as if he were angry at me. But maybe it was better that he treated me this way than how he used to spoil me before because if he treated me like this, I could keep my heart away from him for good. "I'm sorry, Mr. White. It won't happen again," I immediately apologized to him. Uncle Lux didn't say anything more and just adjusted his necktie before turning away and continuing to walk. I hurriedly followed him. Uncle Lux got in the back seat so I sat in the front seat. "Sit beside me," Uncle Lux ordered with a serious face after I sat down. Without a word, I got out and moved to the back seat. "You're back, Miss Jianci. Madam will surely be happy when she finds out you're here again. She misses you so much," the White family driver, Geno, commented happily when he saw me. "Ahm, could you please not tell Aunt Yna and Grandpa that you saw me yet? When I have time, I'll go to their house to see them," I pleaded with him. I wasn't ready to face them. I was embarrassed to show myself to them because I didn't know what reason to give for suddenly leaving their house without saying goodbye. "You're heartless, Jianci. Don't you know how much Mommy and Grandpa miss you? And now that you're here, you don't want to show yourself to them," Uncle Lux said with an angry voice. "It's not that I don't want to show myself to them, Mr. White. I'll go to your house too, but not now," I reasoned. I couldn't tell him that when I went to their house, I would only remember the painful event on the night of my eighteenth birthday. I swallowed my pride that night but it only resulted in shame. "Why did you leave, Jianci? Is it because—" "Let's not talk about that anymore, Mr. White," I firmly cut him off. "Don't worry because I will show myself to them. I owe your family a lot. So I won't ignore them no matter what happened. I'll go to your house the next day." "Your house." Uncle Lux sneered. "So you no longer consider our house your house because you no longer live there? And we are not inside the office so call me Uncle Lux." Instead of answering what he said, I just kept quiet in my seat. Why is he angry at me? Maybe because I was back and he thought I would cling to him again? Geno suddenly swerved the steering wheel to the left so I unintentionally fell on Uncle Lux's chest. I held tightly to his chest. "I-I'm sorry, Mr. White. I didn't mean to—" "Call me Uncle Lux." He held my arms and stopped me when I was about to move away from him. "I think it's better if I call you Mr. White so I don't forget that's what I should call you when we're in the company." Calling him Uncle Lux is too intimate for me. That's probably also why he wants me to call him respectfully so that no one who hears us will think that there's anything between us other than being boss and employee. I was about to move away from him and go back to my seat when Geno suddenly braked. Instead of moving away, I fell on Uncle Lux again. My lips kissed his chin. It was only about an inch away from his lower lip. I didn't move away from him immediately and my lips remained on his chin. He didn't do anything to make me leave either. He seemed surprised too, so he couldn't react immediately. "I'm sorry, Sir White, Miss Jianci. A child suddenly crossed the street, so I braked," Geno apologized. He looked at us briefly and laughed subtly when he saw our position. He pretended not to notice and continued driving. When I heard Geno's voice, that's when I came to my senses. I quickly moved away from him and shifted my position. I heard Uncle Lux clear his throat softly but I didn't glance at him. I didn't want to see the disgust on his face because my lips touched his chin. I would only remember the disgust on his face when he saw me inside his room wearing only thin and sexy lingerie. "Did you do it on purpose, right?" To me, he wasn't asking but wanted to confirm that his suspicion was true. He thought I kissed his chin on purpose. He probably thought of me as a cheap woman ever since that night. "Believe it or not, I didn't do it on purpose. You probably heard what Geno said that he suddenly braked because a child suddenly crossed the street," I answered him with a frown. I crossed my arms and faced the window. Uncle Lux didn't say anything more so I remained silent too. Even when we arrived at the restaurant we were going to, Uncle Lux was still silent. When I secretly glanced at his face, I discovered that he was frowning. We entered the reserved room. I saw that there were five men and three women sitting at the table, probably waiting for Uncle Lux's arrival. Three of the five men seemed to be the same age as Uncle Lux and the other two were older. The three women were probably also the same age as Uncle Lux. I noticed that one of the three women suddenly frowned when she looked at me. Maybe this woman liked him. That's the only reason why women frown at me. It's because of Uncle Lux. They were jealous of me. "You're finally here, Mr. White. Kaitlyn couldn't wait for your arrival. She forced me to let her tug in this dinner meeting because she wanted to see you," the older man said to Uncle Lux with a smile. "Don't expose me to him, Dad," Kaitlyn complained to the man who spoke, who turned out to be her father. She was the woman who frowned at me. And my suspicion was correct. She did like Uncle Lux. "I'm happy to see you again, Lux," she said to Uncle Lux with a sweet smile. She even pulled out a chair for him. I secretly frowned because Uncle Lux sat in the chair that Kaitlyn pulled out. I just remained standing behind him because he didn't tell me to sit down. "Who is the beautiful woman with you, Mr. White?" asked one of the three men who were almost the same age as Uncle Lux. "She's my new assistant," Uncle Lux quickly answered, then focused his attention on Kaitlyn, who was next to him in the chair. He didn't even bother to introduce me to the people in front of him. Anyway, I was just a lowly assistant, so why would he introduce me to people who looked like him and were also rich? "Come here, Miss Assistant. Sit beside me. I'm Jared Sebastian. CEO of Steel Manufacturing Company." Jared pulled out a chair for me with a smile. "Thank you, Mr. Sebastian," I answered him and gave him a tight smile. "Just call me Jared. I'm sure it sounds better when my name comes from your lips." Jared was a playboy. It was obvious in his actions and words. Jared reached out his hand to shake hands with me. Although it was obvious that he was flirting with me, he introduced himself properly so there was no reason for me to embarrass him and not accept his handshake. But before Jared could touch my hand, Uncle Lux suddenly pulled my chair next to him. When I looked at his face, it was dark and his eyes were narrowed as if he was jealous of Jared.
