Chapter 1
"Ma’am. Your husband’s here."
Brianna’s head snapped up.
A smile pulled at her mouth before she could stop it. Her fingers curled around the edge of the tablecloth until her knuckles went white.
"Finally," she breathed.
God. The waiting was over.
Weeks of cold bed. Silent house. His missed calls.
Maybe tonight it will go back to normal.
She looked toward the entrance.
And froze.
Because Blake wasn’t alone.
He stood there in that stupid black suit that cost more than her car. Same jaw. Same walk. Like nothing had changed.
Except the woman on his arm.
Dolly.
Brianna’s stomach dropped.
Her eyes went straight to Dolly’s wrist.
The bracelet.
The diamond one.
He’d mentioned it last week. Said it was for "someone important."
Brianna had laughed and asked if it was her birthday.
It wasn’t.
It caught the light as Dolly moved, throwing little sparks across the table. Right against Dolly’s skin.
Brianna stood. Her legs felt like water.
"Blake?"
Her voice came out small. Stupid.
His eyes met hers. Nothing.
No flicker. No guilt. Just that blank CEO stare he used in meetings.
He walked over. Dolly’s hand was looped through his arm like she owned it.
Each step felt like a punch.
They reached the table.
He didn’t say her name.
He didn’t even look at the flowers she’d put there.
He just pulled out a chair.
For Dolly.
"Sit."
"Thank you, Blake," Dolly said softly.
Brianna stood there.
Like a waiter.
Like air.
"Blake. What is this?" Her voice shook.
He finally looked at her. Annoyed.
"Are you going to make a scene?"
"A scene?" A laugh tore out of her. It didn’t sound like her. "This is our anniversary, Blake."
"And?"
And.
That one word broke her.
"You told me to come," she said. She hated how desperate she sounded. "You said tonight mattered."
"It does." He sat. Next to Dolly.
Not across from her.
Not next to his wife.
Next to her.
Dolly gave her this tight little smile. "I think there’s been a misunderstanding."
"No," Blake said. "There hasn’t."
Brianna’s hands fisted at her sides. "Then explain it."
"Why? So you can lie again?"
Her breath caught. "Lie?"
He reached into his jacket. Slapped an envelope on the table.
"Open it."
Her fingers shook so bad she almost dropped it.
Photos.
Her.
With Mark from work.
At the late-night project meeting. Leaning over his laptop. Laughing at something stupid he said.
"What is this?"
"You tell me."
"It’s not— he’s my colleague! We were working!"
"At 11pm? In his car?"
"There were people there! You’re taking it out of context!"
Blake laughed. But not like it was funny.
"You expect me to buy that?"
"It’s the truth!"
Silence.
Then, quiet.
"I never trusted you."
The floor fell out from under her.
"What?"
"I married you because I had to," he said. Like he was reading a report. "Not because I wanted to."
Three years.
Three years and that’s all it was to him.
"Did you ever—" Her voice cracked. "Did you ever love me?"
No answer.
She looked at Dolly. At the bracelet.
"She’s the important one, huh?"
Blake didn’t deny it.
Brianna let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh. "I actually thought it was for me."
She wiped her face with the back of her hand. Stood up straight.
"Do you love her?"
"Yes."
Okay.
Okay.
She put the photos back. Neat.
"Then I guess we’re done here."
"Good," he said. "Easier that way."
Easier.
Right.
Brianna turned and walked.
Her heels clicked on the marble. Loud in the quiet restaurant.
No one stopped her.
Outside the air was cold. It hit her face and she finally let go.
A sob ripped out of her. She clamped a hand over her mouth.
"Three years," she whispered to no one. "Three years for nothing."
She stared up at the sky. Empty.
Lost.
Then something in her chest shifted.
The hurt didn’t go away.
It just went hard.
Her tears stopped.
Her hands stopped shaking.
"Blake," she whispered.
"You chose wrong."
She stepped off the curb into the night.
"This isn’t the end."
Her voice didn’t shake anymore.
"This is where I start."
