chapter 1 William did not know what impelled her;she went to the giant guava tree to meet Karo. she had thought that it was just to hear what he wanted to say. He knew she was married so he would surely have nothing ulterior in mind. she met him already waiting beneath the giant guava tree.she wanted to meet him. Unknown to her, john had been returning home when he sighted her walking out of the house. he hid behind a big mango tree and watched her as she walked towards the bush. He decided to Trail her. He followed her to the guava tree at the outskirts of town. then he saw whom she met. John was shocked and angry. he turned and left, wondering what his wife was up to going to see another man.It was worse because the man was Karo whom he had learnt used to be lover but that her father had refused to have him come close to his daughter because of family feud. "So, why do you want to see me?" she asked. Karo looked at her for a long moment.He still had the pains of losing her in his eyes.She saw it and she wondered how better her life would just have been had she married Karo.Perhaps, she should have eloped with him to another town and then,marry him and live there. But now,it was too late. "I only heard that you got married and ever since, I haven't seen you until today. I was actually informed by my cousin, Goodluck who had seen you going to the market," he said. "But you know that I am married now. you should not be looking out for me. I am now somebody's wife," she said. "I know that. though I am hurt by that fact, I respect it. I just wanted to meet you and just talk," he said. "Okay, please make it quick because I do not have time. I need to get home quickly ," she said. He really had nothing to say so he asked her what she knew about the feud between their fathers and how they could help to reconcile the two men. "It's too late. we have paid a big price because of their feud," she said. They began to talk and before she realised it, she had spent it there. it was getting late and she decided to take a leave. He offered to walk her but she told him no. "I don't want people to start talking," she protected. just then, John and Williams parents appeared. Williams and Karo were shocked. mike and his wife were embarrassed. "You? didn't I warn you to stay off my daughter? now, don't you know that she is a married woman?" mike raved and attached Karo, dealing him slaps. "No, he just wanted to see me so we can look at ways of reconciling you and his father,"Williams said. "shut up!" mike said. He returned to attack Karo. "I will kill you for trying to corrupt my daughter's mind." But the young man put up resistance this time. "I was only talking to her, that's all. don't lay your finger on me anymore." mike halted and stared at him. "Talking to her in the bush? I will deal with you. By the time I finish with you, your stupid father will run away from this town." John just stood there, not saying a word, just staring. mike turned to Williams."Williams, so this is your plan. this is why you've been making up tales about your husband simply because you want to be with this he-goat. Do you know that infidelity is a taboo in this land?" Williams tried to explain but her parents wouldn't let her do so. They dragged her away. John followed but Karo stood there feeling very guilty. He had put Williams in trouble. it wasn't his intention, now he imagined how crushed she would be especially because tongues would wag. mike and his wife took Williams to her husband's house. John followed quietly until they got to his house. He allowed them in and was acting really gently. He knew what he was doing. He had to sell that disposition to them. but as far as he was concerned, Williams would be miserable. He would make her regret cheating on him. Even she was afraid of what awaited her. It would be hell if he accepted her back and now, she would never have the nerve to report him to her parents because they would not believe her. "please, my in-law, I know my daughter, it is true that they were only talking. she knows the consequences of cheating on her husband and she will never try such," Favour pleaded. John was quiet. He just stared at Williams. Williams was hoping fervently that he would refuse all pleading and reject her. At least, that would save her the battery and misery. Tears ran down John's face, a sign of his helpless weakness and that really touched Mike.He went to him and shook his shoulder. "Come on John, stop the tears. trust me, William knows that you married her and also knows that it is a taboo for a married woman to cheat on her husband," mike said. Her parents pleated with their in-law. John acted so weak, telling how much he loved his wife but his wife would only treat him with contempt simply because she wanted to break the marriage and go with Karo. "Don't worry John, This marriage will not break and I forbid her to ever have anything to do with Emmanuel's useless son," mike assured "I am sure you now can see why she has been telling lies that I beat her,"John said. "Dont worry, now we know the truth," Her mother said. John surprised mike and favour when he began pleading with Williams to try and accept him as her husband because he loved her and wanted her to be happy with him.
