Runaway Bride
I knew it was over when I pulled away from the wedding venue. There was no turning back. Mascara burned my eyes as I quickly pulled out of the parking lot and onto the packed boulevard. My eyes w peeled on the road, my fingers locked on the steering wheel. The last thing I wanted to do was dare look outside the window. Just as the red light turned green, a flash caught my eye. Sighing, I glanced at the review mirror, grabbing a quick glimpse of him, running out of the Veterans Hall building, rented tux and all. I hit the gas pedal fast. If I was going to get out of town anytime soon, I had to leave quickly. Luckily, I was packed and ready, my trunk already filled with a few suitcases of my belongings. In the back seat, a laundry hamper with some toiletries, and a cardboard box of photos and mementos relaxed silently in the back. In the rearview mirror, I could see the hamper's contents still neatly stacked. I ignored the amber bottle of Flora #3, the $400 bottle of perfume my fiancé had bought me for my birthday. I wouldn't say I liked Flora #3. Bitterly, I ripped the veil off my head and threw it in the back, purposely on the floor. I didn't want to see that thing. It was bad enough that I was stuck wearing this awful white lace dress for the time being. My phone had been continuously ringing, but I ignored it. I knew who would be calling; my mother, my best friend, my fiancé I had left at the altar. I can imagine how awkward the conversation will be. Or won't. I didn't plan on seeing Bryon ever again. What I did plan on seeing was the beautiful gold rush town of Twin Pines, a gorgeous alpine village situated high in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. I had been there over the years on family vacations, but this time I went solo to...unwind. For the most part, Twin Pines was an old resort town, a city that saw its days of glory back in the 1950s and 60s. People from all over California drive up to the Sierra Nevadas, where vacation towns dot the freeways. I had found a small cabin rental for a few hundred dollars a week, and it looked cute in the online photos. I had no plans other than the cabin. I had an office job as an administrator that, unknown to Bryon, had received my two-week notice in a hasty rush a week before. I don't think I will be returning for my last week. I shuddered, thinking about my time wasting away at G and H Realty as the office "mom." At twenty-five, I was the youngest person that worked there, and besides being a mom to a few childhood cats, I had no business playing unlicensed shrink to Broker Tom Hall (the H in G and H) or listening to Broker Micah cry about his affair again. It might have also been running errands for Micah's unsuspecting wife, Sandy, and the oversight of Broker Gary (the G in G and H). He is either drunk, playing online games, or browsing international online dating profiles of women. Half of the time, I have to hunt down two new agents because one is constantly MIA, and the other may have some addiction problem. I frequently catch them in the bathroom, but that's another time. Sigh. Or Agent Bella, Gary's niece, is the bane of my existence. There's Agent Jiu, who may or may not still work in G and H, and Agent Luke, who makes me uncomfortable by staring at anything other than my eyes for entirely too long. I shuddered again, thinking about how I would often stare out the windows for entire blocks of time, daydreaming about leaving G and H. And Bryon. Bryon's wasn't bad. But he wasn't exactly good. He had zero sense of adventure. I always played it safe. He never wanted to try new foods or new experiences. He ordered the most straightforward thing on restaurant menus and listened to the same music he had been listening to since high school. He was vanilla. And he was vanilla in every aspect. I pulled onto the freeway and glanced at my phone, buzzing away. Thirty-one missed calls and forty-seven messages. Wow. People were most likely pissed, and I would have some explaining. But I will have to deal with that later.
