"Some doors should never be opened."
The Last Lantern Keeper The village of Ashvale sat at the edge of a forest no map dared to name. Every evening, just before sunset, an old man climbed the hill carrying a single brass lantern. The villagers believed that if the lantern ever stopped glowing, the darkness beyond the trees would cross into their world. For fifty years, the old keeper never missed a night. When he finally passed away, everyone assumed the lantern would simply go out. Instead, it lit itself. The next morning, sixteen-year-old Elian found the lantern waiting on his doorstep. Attached to its handle was a faded note: "The forest has chosen its next keeper. Do not let the light die." Elian laughed at first. He was a blacksmith's apprentice, not a guardian of ancient mysteries. But as sunset approached, strange shadows began creeping through the streets. Dogs refused to bark. Birds vanished from the sky. The brass lantern grew warm in his hands. With no one else willing to climb the hill, Elian took the lantern and followed the winding path into the fading light. Halfway up, he heard whispers calling his name. They knew things no stranger should know—his childhood fears, his dreams, even the promise he'd made to his late father. The whispers begged him to turn back. He almost did. Then the lantern burned brighter. When he reached the stone tower at the top of the hill, he discovered that the old keeper's job had never been about lighting a flame. It was about guarding a door. And someone... or something... was trying to open it. The wind carried a voice from the other side of the ancient gate. "You're too late." Elian tightened his grip on the lantern, unaware that this was only the first night of a journey that would decide the fate of every kingdom beyond the forest. To be continued...
