The Proposal
Nefer paced as he waited for her at this point they had practically been dating. He did not officially ask her to be his girlfriend. Somehow they were in a relationship. He visited her at home and met her family. She sometimes comes to his house to clean and cook for him.
“It is fair she wants me to propose to her the right way,” Nefer said to himself only to see her walk through the front door. She looked beautiful, her hair waved with the wind and he waved back.
“Hello,” he waved his hand and she grabbed it. She interlocks her fingers between his. His fingers were a little oily but she did not mind. They walked to his car and he opened the door for her. She sat down and he gently closed the door.
She quickly got in the driver’s seat and started the car. He had a reservation at a restaurant. He had prepared to propose after dinner. Monica knew he was going to propose. She smiled the whole drive. Everything hinted at a proposal, they never had dinner this fancy. It was not that fancy but it was the fanciest they could afford.
They got to the restaurant, they were ushered inside.
“Nefer Aziz,” Nefer said and they were accompanied to their table. A window side table a bit further from the front door. From their table, they could see the garden. A place with exclusive tables that cost thousands. He had wanted to get a table in the garden but he could not afford it.
They had dinner the waiter had just gone to bring dessert when Nefer got on his knees. Immediately everyone’s attention turned towards him. His heartbeat spiked but the look on her face made him happy.
“I can do this,” he mumbled to himself.
“Monica will you..will.. you?” he held his chest as a sharp pain ran across his chest. His chest tightened sweat beads started to form on his face. One ran down his cheek and was absorbed by his shirt. He fell to the ground and Monica sat him up.
“Somebody call an ambulance,” she said resting his head on her lap. At this point, everything felt fuzzy. She loosened his tie around his neck and undid his collar button.
“Nefer stay with me,” Monica said and held his hands tightly. Tears ran down her cheeks.
As Nefer lay there every decision he had made ran through his head. Like a dream, he experienced everything. He was young again in high school sitting in front of him was a girl he admired. They exchanged greetings from time to time. One afternoon, Nefer wrote a heartfelt letter and slipped it into her locker.
After school, he waited for her behind the school block. She showed up with two other friends. Nefer thanked her for coming and confessed his feelings.
She chuckled then apologized for chuckling onto burst into laughter.
“Are you stupid why would you call her to spew this nonsense? Look at the way you are dressed. What would make you think she would ever go out with you?” One of her friends said as she walked towards him. Nefer bowed his head in shame. Still, he did not regret telling her how he felt.
He turned around ready to walk away.
“It is fine, it is my fault. I acknowledged him just to be nice. Imagine if he asked me in class, he would have ruined my reputation. At least he waited to do it when no one was around.”
Ever since that day, Nefer never asked a girl out again. If he even thought about it he got a panic attack. After being alone most of his life he met Monica. She would ask for his help with jobs around the workplace.
Later Nefer found out she was good at her job. He was furious, for months he avoided her. Until she found out from a colleague why he was angry with her. That evening she followed him home. It was not her intention, she tried to get his attention but she ignored him.
When he got home he quickly locked the door behind him.
“I am sorry, I was not using you. I just like spending time with you. The only place I got the chance to do that was at work. I did not mean to trick you.
As Monica walked away she heard the bolt click. She turned around to see Nefer standing at the doorway.
“Would you like to have tea?”
Nefer asked and Monica smiled and nodded. He walked into the house leaving the door open. Monica followed him and closed the down behind her.
This memory made him smile.
“My only regret was not asking you out sooner. If I meet you in another life I would not hesitate.”
Nefer thought as his heartbeat slowed down.
