Once he’s gone, the relief that I got through this surprise visit unscathed starts swirling through my body. I stand there, rooted in place, barely able to believe it’s over. I faced Franklin, and I’m still standing. Somehow, I got through it okay.
I glance around the hallway, surprised to be alone. The silence feels strange, too. Not as ominous as before, but still too loud after the tension that filled the space only moments ago. In my mind, I picture all the other ways this could have gone, dark possibilities that I’d pushed aside just to get through it. I don’t want to think about them. No use in going over things that didn’t happen…but if only that were as easily said as done.
