Now, when the chosen one saw that his words were praised only by his own partisans and others who thought along the same lines as he, and that they had no access whatsoever to the hearts of the people, he lost patience, and began to think of other ways to ensnare people, compelling them to apostasy and winning them for the Magyar tongue. He began to terrorise many with threats, declaring that holding to the Slovak language and its instruction were f*******n by law and dangerous. All who heeded not his words he threatened with strict punishment. But no country might decree laws forbidding any sort of instruction or education, unless it wished to call a curse down upon its own head. For what country, I ask, would wish, or even think of desiring, that its citizens should remain in ignorance
