The Poles fought on all the barricades of Europe, but this brought them neither glory nor benefit. Do the Poles not know that it is impossible to draw vital strength and freedom from others? Will they not, finally, learn from all their cruel disappointments and set off along the path that has been marked out to us all? They’ve already tried their luck everywhere (at the present moment, they might still give it a whirl in Turkey) but without success.27 They’ve allied themselves to everyone except their own brother tribes, on whom they’ve turned their backs.
