Chapter 3

Jaxon had kept his word in having someone bring her car. The next morning the little bug was parked right in front of my house keys in the ignition. Living in a small town often drove her crazy but the safety element to it was something she could never stop loving. Following the normal routine of her mornings Sam started the morning with tidying up the home and airing it out. When that was complete she changed into a workout set, this time one with shorts, and headed for the door. Instead of hiking trails that almost lead to her death she would rather take a walk in the neighbourhood. The sun was out signalling the start of a new day offering barely any warmth. On days like these Sam thought about moving. Somewhere warm, with the beach nearby and having to worry about humidity. Maybe California, or Jamaica, somewhere separating her from her parents by a few hours by flight. Mrs Goldwing was pushing behind her two strollers, one twin fast asleep the other looking in amazement. Like Sam she had on a matching set, unlike her however she had a matching black and gold double strollers with her. The woman was an angel married to the chief of police in the town. Her marriage always made Sam somewhat uncomfortable as the man was a cool 20 years older than her, making her a stay at home wife at twenty-five and already had two kids, desperately trying for more. When her family had first moved here they had started getting invitations to his yearly potluck and they had never stopped when they got married, or had children. Outside from the odd age gap the pair seemed quite happy. The direct sunshine on her blonde hair had it turning into gold, accompanied by a bright smile. “Good morning Mrs Goldwing, you look amazing per usual.” “Good morning Sammy, how have you been- I didn’t see you yesterday morning. What happened?” The question brought a smile to Sam’s face. Someone would have noticed had she been kidnapped by wolves, it wouldn’t be her best friend or her family, but someone would notice. “I decided to try hiking and ended up exhausting myself, getting lost up there, so I slept a majority of the day away.” She smiled milking down the events of the day prior. “So it is true, you had some men in your house.” The mom’s eyes widened as she stopped the pram properly pulling a toy from the bag in the back and handing it to the boy. “When Deloris told me that Nicholas and Jaxon were seen leaving you home I was unbelieving, but they did then. They helped when you got lost on those trails.” She quipped looking at her with a teasing smile. The dimples in the woman’s cheek were on show, along with glistening gold hair and molten brown eyes, Sam was unable to even fain anger. The woman though nosey, was gorgeous. With a fake cough Sam took a step back and a chug from her water bottle. “You know never to trust Deloris; they gave me ride home because I was too tired to drive back.” Mrs Goldwing nodded along, moving two steps closer to Sam. “You be careful with them, they say they live in the woods with their family, off- the-grid type stuff, proper rednecks. I worry their family might be racist.” The whisper in Sam’s ear had her back stiffening. Jaxon and Nicholas hadn’t seemed to be racist, but she wasn’t planning on going back to check. “You don’t have to worry about me, I doubt I’ll ever see them again.” She whispered taking a step closer to the woman ear grazing her cheek. She gave a cute laugh moving behind the pram once more, cheeks now slightly flusher. “Good. Good. I’m going to let you get back to your walk while I work at this baby weight.” she smiled walking past Sam with a tap on the back. “I keep telling you Mrs Gold, there is no bad weight on you.” she smiled also walking in the opposite direction. “Yeah, yeah.” For a beat Sam stops to watch the woman pick up speed with two children. With a shake of the head she continues down on her way. Instead of basking in the sunlight Sam thought back to what Mrs Goldwing had said, her neighbours already knew she was brought home by Nicholas and Jaxon. They were already forming opinions, none that were harmful as of yet. For the next twenty minutes Sam got her normal coffee at Jerrys Café, with the complimentary donut for being beautiful. The Smiths had chopped down a tree and were finally selling the wood. Deloris gave Sam a plate of warm ribs, leftovers from their barbequing last night. Though a gossip, Deloris and her family could cook up a storm. “Don’t forget to tell me what you think of ’em.” Deloris smiled hobbling to her porch swing. “Wouldn’t dare to.” Sam smiled back. This was a little game they played back and forth of sending the same Tupperware of food back and forth. The car in the driveway of her home made Sam sullen. Dampening the smell of the rids and taste of the coffee. When had they come back? And for f***s sake why were they here? “Mother. Father.” Sam called out placing the food down and taking off her shoes. “Samkelisiwe, we’re in the kitchen.” The sound of the baritone voice made Sam roll her eyes, grabbing both the coffee and Tupperware. Dealing with both her parents this early in the morning was not something she ever wanted to do. Her dad sat at her island reading her paper with a green smoothie in hand still in scrubs. Her mother’s head was turned to the stove stirring. They both turned their attention to their recluse daughter as she entered the kitchen. Her father’s eyes trailed her observing, before he could make any comment her mother moved to hug her. “I’m making breakfast, go change and come sit with us.” Though tempted to ask them to leave Sam sighed and dropped the contents in her hands on the counter. “Hayi umasthihli lo owugqokile.” Her father muttered lowering his gaze from the paper for just a second. A look from her mother, had Sam biting her tongue, making her way to her room. [Not this tiny/short thing you are wearing] The visit was not over and Sam was already at her wits end. The honorary church dress she wore in their presence made an appearance. The thing had too high of a neckline that she always gnawed at. By the time she had come out of the shower, and dressed he had eaten all of her ribs Tupperware left bare on the countertop. With a deep breath she silently ignored it walking to her small dining table. With the plates clean Sam started to clean up, hoping it would usher them out the door faster. “We heard you were hanging around some of the men here. Two of them.” her father started. Instead of pretending to be focused on the dishes Sam turned to look at him. “They helped me home because I got lost hiking in the woods.” she explained plainly. “Good. Good.” He muttered breaking the eye contact. He started heading for the door, with her mom following. She too followed close behind. “We are going back to the training centre again, don’t make us worry for no reason Samkelisiwe.” With a hug to her mother’s side, a wave and smile Sam locked the door behind her with a sigh. She moved back to the kitchen and dining room to start cleaning, giving a mourning stare at the rib bones. The rest of the morning was spent in the kitchen cooking up a storm, Food to feed her for the week to come. Episodes of criminal minds played on the iPad lulling the silence of the home. As she placed the triple chocolate cake into the now clean Tupperware Sam couldn’t help smiling grabbing a piece. Instead of going directly to Deloris’s house, Sam chose to start working, the presentation she had to prepare was almost done meaning she would be free till Thursday. Sam woke up to the knock on her door startling her lap top to the floor. Fuck she muttered to herself wiping her eyes. “I’m coming.” She screamed grabbing the lap top. For her own good she hoped it wasn’t her parents, they should have left town hours ago. A glance to the clock let her know that it was nearing six pm. Sam was shocked to open the door to Nicholas and Jaxon, flowers in hand. “Hi…” she asked questioningly. Their home was a good twenty-minute drive from hers. “We wanted to check up on you, see if you’re okay.” Nicholas started handing me the deep red bouquet of roses. “Last night was probably a lot.” Jaxon added, giving me pink and white peonies letting himself in. Nicholas stared at Jaxon, then me. “Come in, please.” Sam smiled sheepishly. Sam led them to the kitchen- dining room, lighting up the house as she went. “Have a seat, I just need to turn on the lights, you guys woke me from a nap.” she exclaimed with a yawn. She left them to their own as she went around closing the windows, closing the curtains and lighting the house up. In the bathroom she took her braids out of the ponytail, did her edges and put on some clear gloss after a rinse of mouthwash. She thanked the heavens that she took that awful dress off and was now in some shorts and a big grey farmers market t-shirt that fell off one shoulder. Last on the to do list was the outside lights. When those were on, Sam moved to join the two men waiting for her. The two bouquets were on her counter, drawing her attention. “Have you guys had anything to eat? Would you stay for dinner?” she asked staring at the two men with her bottom lip between her teeth. “Famished.” Jaxon smiled showing off his dimples once more. Instead of filling the silence with awkward conversation Sam turned on her music on shuffle. “Let us help.” “You guys can help me set up the table outside.” She smiled pointing outside to the pergola in the middle of her garden. The sole reason she had picked this community. “The hutch has everything,” she smiled pointing to the ornate wooden piece in the dining room. That seemed to be all the instruction needed for the duo as they started to set the table. They moved in and out, the chill of night making Sam smile. The food she had spent all morning make was now in bowls on the table. Conversation started out slowly with Jaxon and Sam reminiscing about high school. Though they did not know each other at the time they had a mutual dislike for the front admin lady. Nicholas listened intently laughing softly as he indulged in the chocolate cake. Sam noted that he had quite the sweet tooth deduced from him enjoying the sweet sticky wings over the spicy. The one bottle of wine Sam kept in her home was opened and enjoyed halfway through. There was a flush on both their cheeks and it was uncertain if it were due to the cold or alcohol. Sam sat in the balled up hugging herself. “Since you guys said, only shifters exist. Do dragon people exist? I once read a great book about them.” Sam smiled looking at Jaxon. “Luckily they don’t. Shifters need to be of existing animals pretty. Dragons don’t exist, thank God.” He laughed taking a sip of the cheap wine. “In honour of our meeting I watched Twilight again and boy do I have more questions.” she smiled “Go ahead.” Nicholas addressed putting the dishes in a pile. “Do you guys imprint?” “And follow-up, are you each other’s impri-” The question was lulled by the falling droplets. The rain started falling harsher jumping them to taking the dishes inside. In messy giggles she worked with the guys to bring everything in. By the time they were done they were all drenched. Nicholas and Jaxon gave each other a look, avoiding looking Sam. A look they have shared together so many times before. The thin t-shirt she had worn had stuck to her chest. It seemed to not bother her as she moved around to get them towels. At a much slower pace she caught on to what they were looking at, or rather avoiding. “Oh- I’m so sorry-” She laughed sheepishly wrapping the grey towel around her. “Come.” She gestured with her head leading the damp men to her guest bedroom. “You guys can use the shower in there. Let me just get you some towels and soap.” They watched as she moved around, rushing between her room and the closet in the hallway. Eventually the bathroom was stocked and they were both given fuzzy huge white robes and some socks. “Leave your clothes at the door, I’ll wash and dry them.” She spoke towel now around her hair. Unlike earlier where they made a point not to stare, this time their eyes glanced on their own creating a tightening in their wet pants. “Okay, well. I’ll be warming up too.” With that she walked out of the room, closing it softly behind. Outside the rain was pouring, chattering so loud it created an almost storybook ambiance. Sam started off by peeling the wet clothes off and setting them in a pile on her tiled floor. Only when the shower was steaming did she step in to do her hair, washing the rainwater out. Since she had washed her braids after the hike, her focus was just rinsing off the rainwater. An unexplainable excitement turned what would ordinarily be a 20-minute shower in half. Hair and body wrapped in fluffy towels she moved to get ready, this time instead on active wear she decided on some plaid pyjamas, matching of course. The wet clothes discarded on her floor were attended to, putting them in the washer. The door to the guestroom was still closed with no clothes outside so she rather got started on the tea, gearing the kettle up. She figured the first one of them had gone in, and was still inside. While it heated she gazed outside the French doors as it poured. Almost lulling, the neighbourhood, was already a quiet place, as expected of a small town however with the rain there wasn’t a sound it hadn’t swallowed. The soft closing of the door alerted her to Nicholas and Jaxon coming, wrapped in the fluffy robes, that on her were oversized, on them was them was the exact fit. They both had damp hair, and only Nicholas was wearing this socks, Jaxon walking barefoot. “I have got a hair dryer in my bathroom, if you guys need it.” She spoke walking back to the kettle. They moved too, sitting on the island. “Thank you, definitely.” Nicholas spoke softly. They watched him leave, Sam turning to Jaxon. “I’m good.” Jaxon spoke shaking like a dog, getting some on Sam. With a small smile she continued working on the teas. Gathering three teacups, sugar and honey. “I forgot you’re part dog.” She mused. Instead of be offended he let out an attempt of a ‘woof’ before giving her a wink. She laughed, spilling some of the sugar intended for her tea. “How do you take your tea, dog boy?” she questioned holding up both honey and sugar. “One teaspoon of sugar please.” She obliged adding it and stirring. “And Nicholas?” She questioned. As expected he did both, wanting it to be as sweet as possible. The whirl of the washing machine drew both their attention to the hallway where Nicholas was. “He’s domestic like that.” Teas his in hand they headed towards him. “Here you go.” she smiled. “Rooibos tea for you, extra sweet.” She led them through the house to the living room. The forgotten mess from earlier, put her in overdrive, moving the papers and laptop. “You should see Jaxon’s room, don’t worry about the mess.” Nicholas smiled sitting on her plush couch. “I like to think of it more like organised chaos than mess.” “Yeah, sure.” Nicholas laughed. “You don’t even sleep in there anymore.” he added. Once all the work documents were cleared Sam moved to the couch to join the two, tea in hand. They sat in silence, both looking at her, hair wrapped. The top button of the pyjamas opened in a devilishly tempting manner, lips shiny like usual. The sound of the rain adding to the enchantment. Her scent of coco butter and vanilla permeated the room. They had confirmed, gossiping like teenagers that she smelt the same to them both. Being under their gaze made her choke on the tea. when their joint soft taps on her back stopped she stood to grab the remote. There needed to be something else to share their attention. Many of the shows she watched were so long, and she was mid seasons, she thought better to watch a cheesy sitcom. It wasn’t lost on Sam that it was getting late. Admittedly she didn’t want them to leave. She enjoyed having their company, it felt familiar. Her in her pyjamas, and them in her matching fluffy robes. Instead of focusing on the show her mind wandered how to breach the topic. They were unlikely to invite themselves over so she would have to. Four episodes in she decided to turn to Jaxon. “Since its getting late, and the roads are dangerous, do you guys want to stay in the guest room?” “You would have to share the bed, but its big enough to fit the both of you.” “Or one of you could sleep on the couch if that’s more comfortable.” “On the other hand I figure you guys could just wolf it back home, but then you would be leaving your car behind. Its only me so I wouldn’t be easily able to-” Jaxon laughing brought the babbling to an end. Nicholas joining in, Sam joining them too. “Yes. Laugh at the Black girl.” she mused. “We would love to stay over. Thank you for everything, Sam, tonight has been amazing.” “We would love to share your bed.” Jaxon added with a wink. Instead of dwell on it, Sam gathered the tea cups to the kitchen. Heart beat rivalling the rain outside. After pondering for a second she bit her lower lip, and headed back to the guys. - The morning light drew in the room, gently waking Sam. She woke with a smile, which was not exactly unusual as she was a morning person, however the smile was due to the two men sleeping in her guest room. She did her morning routine quietly, not to ruse them. When her thoughts of them got romantic she would however end it as she knew she was confused on who her little crush was on exactly? With the bed made she moved to the bathroom to get ready changing to a legging and matching top, with a running thin fitted jacket. Slowly she opened the windows in the house. The rain had created a huge puddle outside her French doors. A tree in her front yard had also started leaning. Instead of dwelling on it she moved to make breakfast. She decided to get some eggs on the pan, followed by some onions, peppers and mince, then cheese. She took all of them off the heat, into a bowl. When the first tortilla went into the pan, she walked to the wake up the duo. The sight when opening the door stunned her into softly closing it again. They had been cuddled together, limbs entangled, robes nowhere to be seen. In the complete nude. The heat in between her thighs pulsed. Only when assembling the fourth breakfast burrito did she consider they might be romantically involved. It would explain why the two of them had come together. Had they imprinted on each other? There goes my once chance at a threesome. she giggled at the thought squeezing out fresh orange juice on her juice press. As tempted as she was to bake something sweet for Nicholas she figured that would be overdoing it. Instead she started on a fruit salad. Still sweet, but easier to make. As she was plating a groggy Jaxon walked in. Hair still wet, dressed in his clothes from yesterday. Shirt wet from his hair. “Still against hairdryers.” Sam laughed handing him the pitcher of orange juice. In the hallway a Nicholas in just a towel headed in her room. She assumed to use her dryer. “I’ve got short hair, it’ll dry.” Sam then got her iPad, to play some music softly. Jaxon watched as she moved around. Soon enough the last of the group joined dressed, and fully dry unlike his grumpier counterpart. “Good morning,” she perked. “Morning Sunshine.”
