Chapter 6: Unusual stranger

1544 Words
"What's going on?" I muttered to myself as I checked the time, and it's almost evening. Yet, Cassandra isn't back after what we had planned. I kept glancing at the door now and then, hoping she would show up soon. I had a confused expression while wondering what might be happening to her. We both agreed to exchange dresses when she comes, so I would be able to sneak out without the guards suspecting anything. She went home to go bring a wig I would be using because, I have long hair, whilst her hair is short. But it seems it's taking forever for her to show up. I became impatient and tries to get up from the bed when the door to my room opens. My face lit up for a moment but went blank immediately I saw the doctor attending to me, walk-in. This time around, he came alone without the two nurses. As I saw him, I lie back on the bed and put on a frown. He moved over to me, and check my body. To his surprise, my arm that was wrapped with a bandage has already healed. That's an advantage of being a werewolf. No matter how many injuries you sustained, it would heal faster compared to a normal human. The doctor unwrapped my left arm and checked my pulse again. "You are perfectly fine now, and would be discharged tomorrow morning." He said to me with a smile. "Why not tonight?" I asked, still putting on a long face. Since I'm okay, he should let me go tonight. I need to go to the packhouse and witness what's happening there myself. "We still have to keep a close watch on you throughout today!" "Okay! But can I step out for a bit, so I can get some fresh air?" I intentionally asked to see his reaction. "Why not? Of course, you can!" I was so excited as I heard him, and I stood up from the bed. "Can you lead me out please?" I pleaded with him. When he saw me get up from the bed in a fast motion, he was stunned. He stepped back a little to examine what I was about to do. And he looked shocked as I pleaded to go out with him. "Alright, let's go!" He leads the way towards the door, and I gently followed behind him. When we both stepped out, the two men guarding the door, stopped us. "I'm sorry doctor, she can't go out for now." One of them tells the doctor and I got angry. Why would they be caging me in here as if I'm a prisoner? It appears as if, there's something Bernard doesn't want me to know that's why he instructed them not to let me out. "Why can't she go out? She's my patient, and I know what's good for her. Stepping out for a while will relieve her stress!" The doctor sounded so angry as he explained to them. Deep down in me, this doctor is my angel that I didn't even pray for. How could he come up with such a brilliant explanation? That's so great of him. "But, it's an order from Mr. Bernard not to allow her out of the room." The other guy cuts in. "Tell Mr. Bernard to come to see me if he has any problem with her going out. But right now, she's my patient and I know what's good for her. Let's go miss!" The doctor was about to move when the two guys blocked his way. "She can't go with you!" He halted in his tracks and raised his head to glare at them with ferocious eyes. "Out of my way or I would involve the law!" When they heard him, one of them brought his mobile phone out and put a call through. From the way he talked, I could guess that was Bernard on the phone. They talked for a few seconds before he came to whisper into the ear of the other guy. Then they both paved way for me and the doctor to pass. I was amazed when I saw that, they've finally agreed to let me out. But I'm still convinced that Bernard must have informed them to keep watching my every move. My guesses are always right! The two men kept following behind us and focuses more on me. As we got out to the vicinity of the hospital, the doctor bid farewell to me and left. I saw about five to six patients, all spread out in the close vicinity of the hospital. One thing I kept thinking of is how I would escape from here, without those two men knowing. The more I stand here doing nothing, the more I'm running out of time. I know by 7 pm, they would begin whatever they want to do, and I need to stop it. 'How do I leave here now?' I said inwardly while staring at the two of them. They didn't even for once blink their eyes away from me at all. I was still deep in thought when I suddenly felt a warm hand on my back. I quickly turned and was surprised to see a girl of my age, putting on a black hoodie and blue pants. Her long brown hair was strapped down to her back while putting on a black face cap. "Hi dear, I'm Laura!" She extend her hand towards me for a handshake as she was smiling too. "I'm Maria!" I returned her handshake and stare at her. "What's going on with you?" She looked worried as she asked the question. I glare at her, not understanding what she meant with her question. "What do you mean?" I asked. "I noticed those two men behind you are staring at you intensely. Do you know them?" She stylishly asked, without making them notice anything. "I don't! But I guess someone asked them to keep a watch on me." "But why?" She was confused. As I saw how curious she was to know about everything, I explained some things to her. I didn't go into full detail about the whole situation to her, but I gave her a brief explanation of what's happening. "That's so cruel of him! Why would he deprive you of the right to be at your parent's burial? That's bad!" She said angrily. I only nodded my head to what she just said, and I continue to stare in the direction of those two men. "Do you need my help in distracting them?" "Huh?" I was dumbfounded by what she just said. My gaze landed on her and I seize her up with my eyes from head to toe. "How will you do that?" "Just tell me if you want to, and I will do the rest." She has this confident look on her face, and she sounded with certainty. "Okay, do it!" I wanted to give her a benefit of the doubt, so I agree with her opinion. "Take," she handed a car key to me without anyone noticing. "Once I've succeeded in distracting them, pass through that door over there, and head towards the 3rd car parked outside." "But I don't know how to drive!" I whispered into her ear. "Seriously?" She asked and our eyes met, then I quickly look away. It's a shameful thing that at the age of nineteen, I can't drive yet. My dad disturbed me so much about teaching me, but I was reluctant to learn it then. Now that I needed so much, he isn't here anymore to teach me. "Don't worry, just go and wait for me inside the car, and I join you as soon as I can." "Okay! But are you sure this would work? Those men seem tough to me." I told her, all worried. I'm a bit scared for her if she's later caught. With the way Bernard has changed, he can do anything drastically without anyone controlling him. So, I feel afraid for Laura. "Trust me, and do as I instructed you." "Alright, thanks, Laura!" I smiled at her. She must be a guardian angel sent to me by my parents. I don't even know if she's here to see someone or not, because she never mentioned anything like that to me since we started talking. "Don't mention dear!" She smiled back at me and walked away from my side. As she strides over to where those men are, I had my eyes focus on her as I was gaping at what she planned to do next. Instead of going over to them, she walked past them and heads into the hospital. I was surprised at first, thinking that, maybe she already has a change of mind concerning the plan. I was still thinking about it when I saw her walking out of the hospital. But this time, she went over to those men. Before I could process what might be going on with her, I saw the men walk back into the hospital, and she followed behind them. "This is impossible!" I uttered in disbelief as I quickly ran towards the door she showed me earlier and stepped out of it...
