So this is it. The beginning of a new chapter for me.
Pulled out of my own thoughts by the sound of the car engine turning off. I looked over to my mother who had just driven us to my university accommodation.
“You got the papers?” She said, I simply nodded taking a deep breath before getting out of the car.
I’ve never been great with making new friends of doing new things, this would be the start of a whole new adventure. We decided best to leave my boxes and cases in the car whilst I go get registered and find out where my room is.
Today is moving in day for the whole building. It is a private rented student accommodation as my university doesn’t have a campus like most, it’s a building on the door step of the O2 Arena, just outside London. Approaching the entrance ‘Scape’ in big green letters above ( that’s the name of the building) there was a long queue inside of people waiting the get checked in.
“Don’t be so nervous, you’ll be fine Simone” my mum laughed “Lauren to get in the line with your sister I’m going to call your nan and let her know we here okay.” The university and accommodation is only a 45 minute drive from where I live but everyone says you don’t get the full experience unless you live with other students...at least for first year.
Lauren is 2 years younger than me but she has always been more set to go university, she’s taking in the whole experience with far more excitement than me. She is the smarter of us, actually all my siblings are smarter than me. Let’s just say I have never been the studious type.
They are all top of their classes and high achievers, me in the other hand....I was more into sports and winding up the teachers. The only reason I even considered university was for my mum ( It is always something she has wanted for all of us) and because I was told by teachers in school I would never get accepted. One teacher sat and told my mum I would never achieve anything in life, my mothers reaction was not good, I was actually surprised she didn’t launch across the desk at the woman!. That’s when I decided I was going to apply, show them all wrong.
I have always been good at engineering, the only classes I was happy to attend. So when picking my degree I knew it would be something in this area. I wasn’t sure which field to go into so I thought I would try Architecture.
When I got an unconditional offer to my chosen university everyone was in shock, some treachery resented me for the rest of the year because I was probably a little smug. They knew I would try less seeing as I already had my place, they was probably right but I still got good grades in the end.
“Hey, welcome to scape! I’m Jake, what’s your name so we can get you registered and give you your room card.” I hadn’t even realised I was so far down the line. “Hey, sorry it’s Simone White.” I said as I pull myself out of thought. “Okay Simone, your room 315. Just a couple of forms for you to sign.” My mum and sister went to the car to start getting my things whilst I finished the paperwork.
The room was on the 5th floor, thank god for elevators! I couldn’t believe how nice the rooms where for university accommodation. I expected it to be like moving into a prison cell, small box room with marks on the walls. I have my own bathroom, kitchen and desk area, a studio flat. This was what I wanted, didn’t like the idea of sharing a bathroom or kitchen, as much as I was moving here for the ‘uni experience’ I like my own space too.
“Why don’t you pin your door open, that way anyone else who moves in on this floor can sway hello whilst we unpack” I think my mum just wanted to see who I was going to be living around, I’m the oldest of her children and the first to leave home. She was probably more nervous to be leaving me here than I was to be moving in.
I haven’t brought much with me, just the essentials really. It didn’t take long to get me unpacked, mum had organised everything down to the order my clothes had been hung in the wardrobe. My sister on the other hand was too busy wondering around taking pictures to help, anyone would think it’s her moving in.
A few people had said hi as they passed my room, my neighbours either side seemed to have got here before me. Georgie ( my neighbour to the left) seems like a really nice girl, I’ve never really got on well girl girls always been one of the boys in a sense. Sam (my neighbour to the right) seemed a bit of a geek, he invited me to see how his room was set up and I could tell he was a massive gamer by the large computer screen and electronics on his desk.
