Ade's POV
“Fall into formation, guys; stop being a girl,” one of the trainers said, making me grit my teeth in anger. That was one of the annoying jokes the trainers made that made me angry oftentimes. Why must they refer to girls as weaklings when they had not provided an enabling environment for girls to prove themselves.
“You are glaring at the trainer Tate. Do you have a death wish or something?” Kyle whispered to me as he pushed me lightly with his elbow to get my attention.
It had been four weeks of rigorous training. Some nights, I couldn't sleep due to the immense body ache, but I never gave up.
“Tate, with the way you are glaring at me, it seems you intend to challenge me. Want to have a spar with me?” The trainer I had been glaring at asked me and I quickly looked away from him.
That was another problem I seemed to have with the trainers. Overnight, they all seemed to know my name, and I hated that. At some point, I began to realize that everywhere I turned, a trainer was looking at me. I had to discard it as the working of my mind because they couldn't possibly see me as that important.
“No, trainer. I wasn't glaring at you,” I said with my eyes trained to the ground.
“Oh, really. But why don't you come out and demonstrate what was taught just now, and we can see if you learned anything,” The trainer said, grinning. Some of the boys laughed ready to see how much I would fumble. If only they knew how much I do on my own.
I didn't have any other options than to step out. I stood in front of the trainer, and he signaled for me to be given a wooden sword. He took his own wooden sword and another trainer called out the timing.
Every other person made a circle around us cheering. I was nervous. I was afraid that I would end up making a mistake and those who wanted to bully me would have something to use against me.
I sighed heavily to calm myself down for what was ahead. At the count of three, I pretended to attack the trainer and stopped. He moved to the left, thinking I was about to attack him, but I aimed for his right side instead,d, but he was swift. Before my wooden sword could hit him on the side, he blocked it with his own wooden sword.
I smirked when I saw the look of surprise on his face. He smiled at me which I didn't expect. Five minutes later, we were both panting hard and the trainer had not been able to deliver a single blow to me. I was fast, and I knew it, so I used it to my advantage.
“Okay, training is over for today. Beat it, guys, go and get cleaned up,” another trainer said, making everyone grumble in disappointment. They wanted to know who would win.
“Just a month in training and I am already proud of you. Good job, Tate,” the trainer I was sparring with said, smiling at me. I was flabbergasted.
“You are not angry?” I asked with surprise written all over my face.
“Why will I be angry. I have my eyes on you Tate. Do not disappoint me,” the trainer said then walked away.
“Boy, that was terrific,” Tristan said rubbing his hands together happily.
“I wish I could do half of what you just did. Damn, you were so good on your feet. One moment, I thought you would fall, but you would be standing there like a lion,” Kyle said, exaggerating each word.
Both Tristan and Kyle had not approached me until the trainers were gone. The three of us were inseparable. Everyone knew us. The three of us had stood up to Kyle's stepbrother one day and would have probably beaten the hell out of his bullying self if trainers had not stepped in.
“I didn't do anything special guys. He was intentionally being soft on me,” I said.
“I know what I saw Tate. You can't tell otherwise, you are good,” Tristan said.
“Let's go clean up; dinner will be served soon,” I said, and we walked away from the training field.
I had gone far from the training field when the evening air blew a tantalizing smell to me. I stood rooted in the spot and looked around but I saw nothing.
I had not seen the commandant, my mate since I ran out of his office. He had not come to view us train which had become a discussion among trainees. They said he was supposed to be there to see how we performed but he never showed up.
“Hey, are you okay?” Tristan asked after he realized I had fallen back.
“Yeah, I am fine,” I said and quickly walked to them but not without looking around one more time to see if I would catch a glimpse of him.
After we had freshened up, we returned to the dining for our dinner. We are in companionable silence. After our meal, I excused myself; I told Tristan and Kyle that I wanted fresh air before going outside to sit on a tree stump to watch the moon.
“I can see that you like watching the moon,” Beta Kent said from behind me. For some unknown reason, I wasn't startled.
“Beta Kent,” I greeted him and stood up from where I was sitting as a sign of respect.
“I was expecting that you would be startled Tate,” Beta Kent observed.
“I wasn't startled at all. There is something about you that reassures me that even when I want to fall, you will catch me. Am I wrong Beta Kent?”
“You are not wrong, Tate. I will catch you in case you want to fall,” Kent said, and I sighed and turned around to continue staring at the moon.
“I miss home, I miss my Mum, I miss my Dad, I miss my sister and I also miss my friends,” I said.
“I can't be your parents but I can be your friend. If you need someone to talk to, you can come to me.”
“Why?” I asked turning to look up at Beta Kent.
“The Alpha told me you are his mate. And I am his Beta. I am to protect you with my life,” Beta Kent said.
“What will I be, his Luna or his fellow Alpha?” I asked him, chuckling.
“You will be what you want to be,” Beta Kent said.
“I haven't seen him since I ran out of his office. Is the Alpha avoiding the trainees?” I asked.
“That is why I am here,” Beta Kent said.
“Really? You want me to spread the news about why he doesn't attend any of our trainings?” I asked frowning lightly.
“No. I am here to plead with you as one friend to the other. If he comes to you, please don't push him away,” Beta Kent said.
“He doesn't want me. So why will he come to me?” I asked.
“On the contrary, he pines for you. No Alpha wolf can stay away from their mate without suffering the consequences. He was going through a lot already before he met you,” Beta Kent said.
“He doesn't cut across to me like someone who wants me,” I said shrugging.
“Put yourself in his shoes. He has always been attracted to women, and suddenly, you were dropped in his lap. Adjusting might be difficult,” Beta Kent said.
“Can I be truthful with you Beta Kent?” I asked, and when he nodded for me to go ahead, I continued, “I don't want your Alpha to come to me or pay me any attention. I have to finish my Alpha training and possibly come top of this group. My Alpha seat is at stake if I fail,” I said then stood up so that I could put some distance between him and myself.
“What do you mean by your Alpha seat being at stake?” Beta Kent asked.
“Nothing, but all I am going to say is that my being here, I am risking it all, and I can't afford to fail,” I said.
“Neither can I afford to fail in making my Alpha and friend the happy person he was before this whole thing started,” Beta Kent said passionately.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked. It was my turn to frown.
“It is not my story to tell. I know he would tell you himself. I believe what you have said is that you are risking it all by being here. Please add accepting him as part of the risk you need to take,” Beta Kent said then gently squeezed my shoulder before he left.
I sat on the stump of the tree for another fifteen minutes, I was lost in thought. Beta Kent was asking me to do the impossible. I wouldn't deny the fact that a part of me wanted my mate but it was obvious that he didn't want me. If it was true that Alpha wolves are the most impatient, then Alpha Delvin must hate me enough to be able to calm his wolf down for that long.
I hissed and stood up to leave. I was surprised to see Arnold, Kyle's brother standing behind me with his hands folded on his chest. I tried to sidestep him, but he moved to block my way.
“If you know what is good for you, you will step out of my way,” I said trying to reel in my anger.
“What are you going to do w***e? I saw the Beta talking to you. I would have come earlier but I thought it was better to let you prepare yourself mentally for another rump in the hay,” Arnold said maliciously.
“I see. Now that you have aired how stupid you are, can you please get out of my way?" I asked gritting my teeth.
“I actually wanted to ask you if you only sleep with the high and mighty in camp or you wouldn't mind if I greased your ass and …” I didn't let him finish the rubbish he was spewing before I sent him a blow to the mouth.
Before I could blink twice, it became an all-out blow exchange. I had Arnold pinned in seconds. He couldn't match my speed, and I had somehow learned to use my speed to my advantage.
“Break this up immediately,” I heard Alpha Delvin shout from above us.
I was surprised to see that we had an audience already. I suddenly felt shy.
“My office, now,” Alpha Delvin said in annoyance. I felt so stupid. I should have just avoided the fight altogether. Whatever the outcome, I guess I had to face it.
