Heartbreak
ALISA
“Callus, you know I’m twenty-five weeks gone. We can’t keep hiding it anymore,” Emma’s voice echoed through the room.
I stood frozen on the spot, a cold numbness spreading from the tips of my fingers. What did I just hear? Emma was pregnant with my mate's child?
I had just arrived back at the pack minutes ago after being away for two gruelling months on an errand. Callus had sent me to handle.
“Don’t worry, Alisa is never coming back from that trip.”
My breath hitched. What did he mean by that?
“I sent thugs after her to end her life on the road. You don’t need to worry, Emma. No one will disturb us from now on.”
“W-what?” Tears streaked down my face as I stumbled backwards, my hands flying over my mouth in absolute shock.
How could Callus do this? I knew he didn’t love me, but despite the fact we were fated mates, I had been working my ass off to prove my worth to him.
While I was away risking my life for his pack, he was busy building a new family behind my back with my best friend.
Worse... he had actually tried to have me murdered.
My hands clenched into tight, trembling fists. With a sudden surge of raw adrenaline, I shoved the door open.
It slammed against the wall with a deafening force, stunning everyone inside.
“A-Alisa...” Emma shrieked, instantly grabbing Callus’s arm and ducking behind his back.
I watched as Callus’s expression shifted. The warm, charming smile he had worn just a second ago instantly vanished, replaced by a harsh, familiar mask.
His eyes went icy, and his voice cut like steel.
“Alisa. When did you get here?” he asked coldly. There wasn't a single shred of guilt or remorse in his eyes.
“Callus... you’ve been having an affair with... Emma?” My lips quivered in disbelief, my brain struggling to accept the harsh reality before me. “And you tried to kill me?”
“Oh, so you heard that?” he said, completely unfazed.
He turned to Emma, deliberately grabbing her hands right in front of me to flaunt their betrayal.
“Emma is carrying my pup now, which means our relationship is official,” he sneered. “I am going to mark her as my lunar mate, and Scarlet is happy to have her as a mother.”
My chest tightened so hard I could barely breathe. God, Callus... how could you?
“You two have been sleeping together right under my nose." I swallowed the heavy lump in my throat, my entire world shattering into pieces.
Suddenly, my mind flashed back to every single time Callus had sent me away on pack business.
'Alisa, you're the only one who can handle these meetings,' he would tell me.
He hadn't been trusting me with leadership.
He had just been clearing the house so he could sleep with my best friend in our own bed.
“Alisa... I’m sorry, but Callus and I realised we have so much in common,” the snake finally spoke.
Stepping out from behind Callus’s back, Emma approached me boldly, her stomach proudly on display.
“You two really do have something in common,” I said, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping my lips. It was a laugh born entirely of pure madness and pain. “You’re both utterly pathetic.”
I didn’t want to look at Emma's triumphant face. Instead, my eyes travelled down to my five-year-old daughter. Scarlet was actively hiding her face, refusing to meet my eyes.
My heart ached. Scarlet was the only person who had occupied my mind every single second I was away.
Now, my own daughter wouldn't even come near me. She was clinging tightly to her father’s legs, treating me as if I were a stranger.
How had Emma managed to poison my little girl's mind so completely?
“Ever since Alex rejected our mate bond, Callus has been comforting me,” Emma said, her head tilting with a nasty, victorious smile. “He realised he found real comfort in me. You know he never loved you anyway...”
“Exactly, Alisa. You know I never loved you,” Callus chimed in, gripping Emma’s wrist protectively.
I stared at his hand. Callus had never held my hand with that kind of tenderness. He had never defended me the way he was defending a home-wrecker right now.
“Everyone knows I only accepted our bond because of my father,” he gritted out, his icy glare cutting right through me.
“And now that the late Alpha is gone, I can finally have the mate of my choice.”
I took two staggering steps back. His words felt like a serrated blade twisting deep inside my chest.
Five years ago, the late Alpha Draven had forced Callus to accept our bond because he loved my family.
All those years I had spent trying to please a man who hated me... and he repaid me by trying to end my life and stealing my daughter.
“Alisa, you can’t force someone to love you. You were never meant to be with him at all,” I whispered, a desperate, mocking smile touching my lips despite the tears.
“Alpha Callus loves me, and he wants us to start a real family together. And Scarlet wants the same thing!” Emma sneered.
“Yes! I want Emma to be my mommy!” Scarlet shouted suddenly, her sharp, childish voice piercing through the room like a bullet.
“She is going to give me a baby brother! I hate you. Go away!”
So, this was his grand plan. To replace me completely, to make my own daughter despise her, and to have me killed on the road so he could claim his mistress publicly?
I never thought Callus would stoop this low! After six years of my life with him?
"C…Callus, how could you be so cruel?” My lips trembled, dragging in a shaky breath.
“Cruel? Well, you can say that for finally removing the stain from my life!” He shouted.
My chest squeezed at the word. A stain? I had been a stain to him all these years?
Gritting my teeth, tears streamed down my eyes.
Fine, I'd leave. I would leave his life and never come back, but first not without my daughter.
“I don’t care what you do anymore, Callus. Just give me my daughter, and I will leave your life!”
A loud laugh instead left his lips, along with Emma clapping her hands like she'd heard the funniest joke.
“Not even your daughter will like to be with you. Don’t you think so, Alisa?”
