The Betrayal
For the past two months, Alisa had been traveling from one pack to another, handling business deals for Callus.
She barely had time to rest, let alone spend quality moments with her only pup, Scarlet.
Whenever she finished one task, Callus would pile on another. Sometimes a mission would take weeks to complete.
Sometimes a month. But this time, it had taken much longer. Alisa could hardly believe she had been away from her home and her family for two whole months.
Now, she was finally going back, having just signed a major business deal with the most difficult Alpha in Redford. Her mate, Callus, had strictly ordered her not to return without a positive response.
“A good Luna should know how to represent her pack and please her mate,” he would coldly recite to her.
Alisa always felt a twinge of discomfort when he said that, but she wanted to please Callus at all costs.
If completing these grueling tasks meant he would finally give her attention and treat her like a true soulmate, she would gladly do them.
She had dedicated her entire life to proving she was a good mate and the perfect Luna, but Callus never seemed to notice.
She wondered how her daughter would react to seeing her.
The last time she left, she hadn’t been able to properly explain to Scarlet that the work was urgent and that she would be away for so long.
“I’m sorry, sweetie. Mommy is going to make it up to you soon,” Alisa whispered, her eyes glistening with unshed tears of happiness.
She looked down at the gift she had bought for her. Containing her favourite chocolate and even a customized journal.
She knew Scarlet loved pink and everything girly, so she had made sure the journal was her favorite color.
When she finally saw Scarlet, she was going to hold her close and kiss her forehead for a long, long time.
God, she missed her baby so much. She wanted nothing but quality time with her daughter now. Callus had promised to give her a break after this trip, so she was back to stay for as long as she could.
Needing to get home faster, Alisa shifted into her wolf form, Pine. She had been traveling through the woods for days, occasionally shifting back into her human form to rest.
Pine was a fast wolf with incredible endurance, eating up the miles through the dense forest.
After another long hour of running, Alisa finally reached the pack borders.
Hoping to surprise her daughter, she slipped quietly into her human form and walked toward the pack house.
Not even Callus knew she was coming back today. She couldn't wait to surprise her mate with the successful business news, and her daughter with the gifts and her presence.
Alisa quietly stepped inside the mansion. Thank goodness most of the extended family stayed in the other region of the pack territory; this large house was meant for just her, her mate, and their pup.
As she walked toward the spiral staircase in the sitting room, a familiar female scent hit her nose.
Alisa frowned deeply. Wasn't that Emma’s scent?
Two months ago, Emma had told her she was leaving for a job with a neighboring pack.
“Callus, the doctor said I’m pregnant.” Emma’s excited voice seeped through the walls of the master bedroom.
Alisa froze at the entrance of the hallway, her hand locking up on the doorknob. Her stomach dropped, a heavy dread sinking in. Surely she was imagining things.
“Emma! This is such good news...” Alisa heard Callus reply, his voice thick with excitement, followed quickly by the sound of eager kisses.
Alisa’s world narrowed to a pinprick. Was that really Callus? She had never heard him speak with such warmth or joy.
The Callus she knew always spoke to her coldly, treating his words as if they were too expensive to waste on her.
“Really? But what about Alisa? She will try to kill my baby if she finds out!” Emma shrieked.
The harsh reality finally cut through Alisa's shock. She wasn't imagining this.
She stood frozen on the spot, a cold numbness spreading from the tips of her fingers. What did she just hear? Emma was pregnant with her mate's child?
*No... no, they must be pranking me,* she thought desperately.
Perhaps Callus had found out she was coming home today and wanted to play a sick joke on her.
A strained, cold smile forced its way onto her face as she tried to convince herself it wasn't real.
This can’t be real. Alisa, just breathe...
She inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly.
Forcing her heart to calm down, she was about to push the door open when she heard another voice—her daughter's.
“Whoa! Does that mean I’m going to have a baby brother?”
Alisa’s breath caught in her throat.
“Yes, Scarlet. But I wonder if your mommy will let us be happy,” Emma said, her voice dropping into a manipulative, sad tone.
“Daddy is going to make sure Mommy can’t do anything,” Scarlet replied firmly. “After all, she left us first. She abandoned us. Mommy doesn’t love us.”
Alisa’s heart shattered into a million pieces right there in the hallway.
Was that what Callus had told their daughter? That she had abandoned them?
How could he? Why would he tell such a vile lie?
Alisa’s hands clenched into tight fists. With a surge of raw adrenaline, she shoved the door open with a force that slammed it against the wall, stunning everyone inside.
“A-Alisa...” Emma shrieked, instantly grabbing Callus’s arm and hiding behind his back.
It was true. It was Emma and Callus together in their bedroom. It wasn't a joke.
Emma was literally holding a medical report in her hand.
Alisa watched as Callus’s expression shifted.
The warm, charming smile he had worn just a second ago instantly vanished, replaced by a harsh, familiar mask. His blue eyes went icy, and his voice cut like steel.
“Alisa. When did you get here?” he asked coldly. Where had that sweet tone gone?
“Callus... you’ve been having an affair with... Emma?” Her lips quivered, her brain struggling to accept the sight before her. “How long has this been going on?”
She stared at them, trembling. She wanted someone—anyone—to tell her this was a bloody joke.
How could he do this? She had been away working her ass off for this man, and he was busy building a new family behind her back with her best friend.
And worst of all, he had poisoned her daughter’s mind with lies.
Callus didn't look guilty. Instead, he fumed, staring at her as if she were the most hated creature on earth. He held her gaze silently, offering no apology.
Alisa’s eyes flicked to Emma, who was still cowering behind Callus with her head down.
“Emma... how long have you been sleeping with my mate?” Alisa demanded, her blood boiling. “And now you’re carrying his pup?”
Neither of them answered. Even her own daughter didn’t run to hug her. Instead, Scarlet shrank back, hiding behind her father to get away from Alisa.
What had Callus done to her pup?
What had Callus done to her child?
“Say something!” Alisa roared.
This time, Callus’s voice boomed, shaking the very walls of the room.
“Yes, she is pregnant with my pup! And we are building a perfect family together with Scarlet!”
Alisa stumbled backward as if she had been struck.
The air left her lungs, and she instinctively clutched her chest, struggling to breathe. Her eyes burned, a heavy, choking sensation tightening around her throat.
Callus glared down at her, his next words cutting deeper than any blade.
“And how the hell are you even here?”
Alisa stared at him, completely broken.
What did he mean by that? Had he expected her to never come back at all?
